How should TOs handle the Gem System? (READ THE OP, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BALANCE)

As much as this is a plausible idea, the logistics of inputting even say, 50 gem combinations under player handles is a nightmare.
You’d have to do it for each console being used for the tournament. And what if a player decides he doesn’t want a certain combination/ has many builds depending on matchup? You’d literally be there forever.

USB based things as well… the PS3 has 2 front ports. Are you going to buy a hub? Say you did buy a hub? What if the USB stick of the player doesn’t work? The player will try to figure it out (plug in, replug, slap it silly, etc.) just to find out it doesn’t work and he’ll have to choose manually.

I really don’t think this is feasible at all. It works at home when you have a certain number of combinations, definitely not in a tournament.
To further emphasise this is the MvC3 pre-selects. You can have a maximum of 3 teams at home of specific assists. Don’t like an assist? You gotta reselect your whole team anyway. Knowing Capcom, editing the presets won’t be any more streamlined than their button config.

From what I understand, both consoles have atleast two USB ports. Why not make it so that you can save up to five or maybe more different teams (with gems set already) onto a stick? This way, players can have different teams and/or different combinations of gems for their team. I find it highly unlikely that a tournament pro would have more than several main teams, if that many. Basically, the game would load both USBs’ files and players would be able to choose their pre-set teams from them. The only “problem” would be making the files work on both PS3 and 360 but it shouldn’t be too hard. The DBZ: Budokai games let you customize characters as well and let you save them to a Memory Card so I dont see why it would hard to implement now.

I know I’m probably hoping for too much but I was thinking that they might be working on some kind of online account system where we can have our profiles and presets of Gems that we can access from any console anywhere. All you would have to do is log on to your profile, get your presets on the new machine and play away. This would be extremely beneficial for offline tournaments, events and casuals/home party play. It’s a real long-shot and I am not sure if tournament organizers can have consoles connected to the net either.

I’m appalled by the amount of people who voted to outright ban Gems. The fucking game isn’t even out yet.

The Smash community must have snuck in SRK while I wasn’t looking.

The only legitimate concerns about Gems right now are how often Capcom plans to release new Gems as paid DLC, and the pre-order exclusive Gems.

This is one idea i felt could be viable eventually we will be bored with vanilla SFxT and my proposal is maybe use these gems to kinda make a Unofficial Turbo version of the game.

True and valid if this worked well. You seemed to misunderstand some of the points, but I’ll reiterate. So:
2 ports = 2 sticks. Any more devices needing to be plugged in requires a USB hub. Multiply the USB hubs required by number of systems. = ++cost
This also requires working USB keys for all players. If your USB key doesn’t work, what’s the consequence? DQ? Selecting manually? What if I’m adamant not to buy a USB key and want to pick manually? This will no doubt occur, whether you like it or not.

Another fair point, just not logistically sound in the present available implementation.
If you’ve been to most tournaments, they are offline.
Even if you had a profile to sign into… entering passwords, logging in, downloading… this itself would take longer than selecting gems individually.
Consoles are often connected to ensure the latest version of the game prior to the event and then taken off the internet completely.
This is how EVO worked and prevents stuff like ghost patches changing things, re: MK9.

Unless the menu for choosing them is mighty fucked, choosing gems still won’t be as bad as button checks. Best case it’s streamlined and only adds a few seconds to character select. Guess we’ll find out.

So the question comes down to how we get them. If you have to play a bunch to unlock them, or pay an unreasonable amount of money to get DLC gems (I really wouldn’t be butthurt about dropping like $50 one time to run small tourneys until the game dies), then fuck that, obviously. Even in that case, I don’t see a reason for restricting anything that’s available out of the box.

Otherwise, there’s not really a reason to ban them other than people on SRK hating literally any thing that isn’t already in a game that’s at least 10 years old.

But why would you need more than 2 ports/sticks? If two players are playing, the most you would need is two ports. And usually I dont try to bring money into conversations but USBs are hella cheap and if you can put your file onto the stick, I see no reason why it wouldn’t work at a tournament. Unless you’re very abusive and/or ridiculously clumsy it would be fine as long as you keep the connector part of it clean. As for if they dont have one, I see it as fight sticks and controllers. If you’re going to a tournament, you should know whether or not you have to bring one (as most tournaments dont supply them) and if you dont want to buy one, IDK maybe a time limit or not being able to use gems? Again I just dont see why a pro gamer wouldnt be able to afford a approx. $20 or less USB stick.

I think the problem lies in having two USB drives and two USB controllers at the same time so the players can pick their gems.

Yeah i just thought about it but since we were talking about USBs I saw it as USB sticks not fight sticks

What if you could create some sort of gem database in the game, so you create like a “NorCal Regionals” database and signed players are given the password and they upload their Gem sets with their names on it, so when their fight is on, they just go to the norcal regionals folder and pick their names, so unless they’re trying to counterpick they won’t have to pick it manually, would save some time already.

I don’t know if it’s a good or even viable idea, but anything to make it possible, I guess.

Gems are inherently unbalanced- its already confirmed that an auto block and auto tech gem are available. These are just the first of the “technical” gems, who knows what other, even more overpowered gems could be released? I, for one, do not want to fight against an opponent who can block while walking forward and tech every throw. (yes, I know that throws suck, but still.) So, every player would be playing with this on, or picking a grappler, and we would have a very stale game.

Banning certain gems is just as much “Smash bros” as is banning gems outright. This is why, in my opinion, we should either play with no gems on or build a “Tournament Standard” Gem set which has 5 gems that have very minimal effects that do not cater to any specific character or team.

You do realize that each tech or block made by gems costs one meter right? May not be a problem spend a meter to avoid a combo, but auto tech seems really useless.

I wasn’t aware of that. Guess auto-tech really isnt too useful. However, I still say spending a meter to avoid a hit (which are huge in this game), without you even knowing (like a burst but easier and automatic) is overpowered.

Not really, because you either need to get hit in order for it to activate for a short amount of time or it’s always on, meaning you’ll most likely never have any meter to do damage yourself.

there are also requeriments for them to become active, also they arent active all the match as far as we know
capcom already stablished that the gems are made with competitive gameplay in mind too (not that i trust them completely)
right now calling the gem system, broken, game breaker, or whatever is just pointless, we dont know how the gem works, if all of them work the same (that you need to complete some requeriments, if some are active trough all the match), or if besides the buffs and/or abilities that grant also have negative effects (+20% attack and -20% deffense for example), how many types of gems are in the game

right now, any talk about them is just speculation
we dont even know how the 2 gems that they mentioned work besides their metter requeriment and that you have to fulfill a criteria

edit
seeing how active is the topic about the gem system, and how it have become the central topic its clear why they barely revealed anything aboutit, that way they caught the attention of everyone, now lets see if this strategy to attract the interest of the people doesnt backfire to them, seeing how many see the gems as a game ruining adition

I agree with Jamp, I mean, it can still be bullshit, but not broken, and you don’t ban bullshit stuff. You can even say that Dark Phoenix and Wolverine have both crossed the limit between bullshit and broken and they’re not banned…

Auto block can be avoided. We just move away until that gem runs out of time.

giving them free time to do w/e they want? thats how you get cornered easily and this isnt marvel with a huge stage.

in case the best thing to deal with autoblock is just keep attacking them to waste their meter, I feel autoblock is a non issue even if it can block your godlike mixup of mashing down A

What I would look out for are the gems that grant busted damage bonuses that can end up in 1 touch deaths

If its always on, I can still do great damage without any meter… Plus this game has big meter gain.
