I don’t think one gem can be called broken. Maybe a combination of certain gems can be classified as broken. I’m sure that there will be gems to counter that too.
I actually don’t think that gems will effect a match THAT much, but they are REALLY bothersome and such a hassle. to be frank, they are simply NOT NEEDED, because it’s not what makes a fighting game.
and let’s hope they test them enough to make sure they’re gonna be glitch free…with all those numbers, percentages and conditions I can already see gems doing more damage then indended when used in some particular combination, or lasting the whole round if activated during a specific move.
don’t speak of the devil, or he might just show up ಠ_ಠ
Going off your idea, why not just have an option that lets you ban gems on your console in the Versus mode? Like in SSB, you can preset the items that you want/dont want to appear in the match as well as if certain stages can be selected via random (this would help in a lot of games). That way, the only gems that would be seen/available to pick are tournament legal ones. Although I dont see the point of banning anything before anyone has even tested them out. For example, we can assume that Speed gems arent broken but what if they end up giving a character almost no recovery on some/all of their normal moves and making their normals come out faster than anything? We can assume that autoguard is ban worthy but what if it’s shown that using it would basically be a waste of a gem and leave you with no meter?
Exactly what I’m saying. I understand that if it is a problem, it should be banned but why announce ban before the game even comes out?
Probably so people can calm the fuck down before we have definite info on the system. With a preemptive ban, people worried that the system might run competitive play don’t have to worry so much.
actually we can have about 5 gems for each character making it 10. I wish there was some way we can preset the gems we use. Anyways It would be pretty cool to set them SSB style for this.
It isn’t needed at all, just like a person don’t need videogames in order to survive at all, we play it because we like it, and they’re doing this because they want to take a new step in fighting games. Going by need only, there’s not even a reason to release this game.
they have enough new stuff in that game for 3 games. no one would be upset about the feature at all if it were to be an own mode / optional. being FORCED to that on top of the other features is what makes it hard to swallow. the game was accepted pretty good till the newest build, why’s that? because the game simply works without them and was fine the way it was.
and tbh, I can imagine allready how long it’ll take in a tournament to set everything up… the matches will be shorter then the setup for the actual fight. this is Street Fighter x Tekken, not BubbyBobble Pokemon Fighter xs
I in the other hand was with zero hype since they announced Cross Assault, it was too much bullshit for me, but the gem system gave me hype.
About the time it’ll take, then I’m with you, if it takes too long it’s not worth it, just ban the gems or the game if it’s no good without them.
Not every game needs to be competitive anyway…
Yea, actually that’s really good thinking. I’d support an idea like that.
I know that.
That doesn’t mean this game is entirely suited for tournament play.
Yo Hecatom, where the hell are you from that they have Mario Party is on tv?
as long as there are people to willing to play in tournaments who is capable to tell what is suited for tournament play
maybe it can be troublesome to try to organize it with the current paradigm, but that doesnt mean that it cant be done
right now, if capcom really wants to see the gems used in tournaments they really need to make the whole idea attractive and more importantly easy to implement for larger tournaments, imo
im from honduras, there is a local tv show about video games, the host who is also the producer lets people to choose what games they want to have torunaments for, as long as there is enough people to suport it, usually only the top 8 are the only ones that are shown in tv
there are also a lot of people who like to make their own tournaments for the games that they like with pokemon tournaments for example with diferent categories based on age and lvl of pokemons
i usually make tournaments for fighting games, racing games and soccer games (the later are the ones with more entries btw) buti also try to make tournaments for other genres if there is enough people that want to participate on them
It’s really all depending on what they (Capcom) do with the gems. People make it seem like you would have to scroll over each gem but they could make it so that you can skip every 20/50/100 or so gems to make it faster. I’m 90% sure if picking gems are fast and easy, most would be allowed in tournaments but there would probably need to be some type of time limit (this would work IF you can pick gems regardless of if your opponent is ready or not) at the character select screen which IMHO shouldnt be that hard. Once you go to a tournament, you should know who you plan on playing and what gems you’re gonna use. Even if you want to switch/counter-pick after the first match, it shouldnt take you that long. Really, a lot of things in tournies could be a lot simpler if Capcom just put more/relevant modification settings in their games.
Again, I know that.
Tournaments are starting to include Catherine as a game to compete in.
I’m just saying we might be looking at this in the wrong light and that shoving it into a competitive foothold before it’s even out is a bit much. I really, REALLY pity the TO’s who have to deal with this now, and unless Capcom actually responds to this ‘dilemma’ of aiding TO’s in being able to run tournaments better / easier then perhaps it should be treated as a fun title to fuck around with and not one with thousand’s of dollars on the line.
I mean that’s the end result here. We’re not talking about your awesome little show in Honduras (which I am jealous of) but tournaments across the world with hundreds to thousands of dollars on the line. I just don’t feel comfortable in a game like this being a part of the circuit with all it’s got going against it now.
A lot of what is being discussed is about potential problems and not actual problems. That’s fine and all, just think that’s better suited towards the general Gem thread rather than this one. Honestly this entire Gem fiasco is just one giant knee jerk reaction based on few concrete details and few vague details. Hell a lot of the outcry is just because people don’t like the concept.
Also DLC should be the least of our fears. If DLC gets out of control and is handled badly, then we ban DLC. Easy fix to that potential problem.
I don’t even see the biggest potential problem being discussed here: Gem UI. A bad gem UI and you’ll see a situation a million times worse than Mortal Kombat button config. Hell people threw theirs hands about over MvC3s UI, I want you to imagine how cumbersome character select will be with Gems.
I think people are taking this serious because it’s the next game after cvs2 in that vs series. I think people want it to be a tournament worth game, but only time will tell. Maybe the gem system is a great inovation in our genre.
a great innovation… that has been done before and isn’t great at all
seriously am I the only person that has ever played dissidia before? gems are the SAME EXACT concept as accessories in that game. Meet certain requirements, get certain buffs/debuffs
They aren’t just from Dissida. They exist in a lot of games, some of which have larger scenes than Street Fighter.
However what happened in those games is in no way indicative of how they’ll effect our game. Just because they weren’t great in dissida does in no way effect how they will work in this game. Compare push block from fighting game to fighting game and you’ll see that its not the core concept but how its implemented.
Stop pretending we’ll know how this will play out. We haven’t a clue.
Also this game is not in the CvS series, I haven’t even seen Capcom present this game as part of the VS series.
