How should TOs handle the Gem System? (READ THE OP, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BALANCE)

Please keep up posting more possible ways to make gem selection viable for tournament play, maybe Capcom can get something from this thread, who knows…

If it was possible to have some sort of USB Flashcard with your gem sets (would come with the game) it would be easier if we’re talking about absurd numbers like 20k gems.

Now that I think of it, they’re kind of forced into making a quick way of picking gems. There should be a timer for Character/SA/Gem selection while online, right? How are they going to deal with online if Gems take so long to be picked - not considering possible saved sets?

Yeah, that could work as well. You pick a gem slot, the 5 gem types appear and then you pick one and go straight into the ID number of the Gem you want. Shouldn’t take longer than picking assists if you know what you’re doing.

Woah I wasnt trolling with this post at all. I’m serious. One way they could make it faster is by organizing the gems, since most people hate the fact that you have to pick from hundreds of gems why not put them in categories? And then make it so that you can filter them by things like how they’re activated, what they do, how long they last, etc. Then they could make it faster by letting you skip over maybe 20 or so gems by pressing a button instead of having to scroll through lots of gems.

having a way to use load gem combinations from an external device is a good idea

edit

expanding from the idea another thing that they could do is allowing to export & import large numbers of sets of gems
so you can do something like create your sets, name them for example Hecatom Set1, Hecatom Set2, and so on, having an option to import all the sets from the usb to the ps3/360 and store them
so anyone that wants to enter the tournament can send to an email their sets prior the event, that way the TO can store them in the consoles and avoid the need of the players of plug their usbs and load them on the event, that way they only need to search their set by the name that they put on them, of course it would be need to have a good search function and also allow the storage of multiple gem combinations (specially for evo)

What we could do is just ban all gems except the most obvious ones. For example, speed and power gems are obvious in there application to gameplay so we’ll know for the most part that they won’t break the game. As we come to understand which gems are broken we can allow the ones that aren’t. Honestly, I think it would be best to do it that way instead of attempting to allow every gem out of the gate.

I don’t know man, I really like the idea behind customising gameplay, I think they should at least try to make it work before banning.

If there’s no other way, then let’s ban it.

Online won’t be a problem at all, you use your save states and there you go

The possible problem is with tournaments.

How are we going to understand which gems are broken if they are banned to begin with?

Online and casual play isn’t really going to bring the brokeness out of them.

I know, what I mean is: If you don’t have your gem sets saved you’re going to have a time limit to pick your gems like on a arcade, right? Even if you can save teams in Marvel, you still have a minute and a half to pick your characters/assists.

With that in mind, if online play does have a timer for character selection then gem selection can’t be complicated otherwise people that don’t save their gem sets will never have the time to actually pick them on the go.

I think Capcom should help us out here. They don’t want gems to be banned and a lot of people don’t want to ban them, but if we have no practical way to set it up for tournament, we have no other choice. It may be the best game ever made, it’s still one game, it can’t take the time of 3 games…

First off I think this poll needs a bit of interpretation. The split of ban or not ban is 55/45, but it looks so deceptive because the not ban has 3 categories to spread out votes. So the raw numbers are much closer than most people are probably viewing them.

When it comes to the topic at hand it’s a delicate situation. By far the best thing for a TO is just ban them all. This simplifies everything and stops a TON of nonsense problems that can arise with available DLC on tourney consoles. The gameplay however is going to speak much differently. How can anyone really speculate on the balance of a game yet to be released? You can’t really, because most games balance changes with the metagame and the level of understanding players have of the system. So given that, the obvious call is ban. You err on the side of ease for TO’s and the balance issue is a coin flip either way, so why not take the side with less headaches?

Now I pose to you a different problem. How do any of you propose to bring up the idea of lifting the ban after the game is better understood? Say the low tiers have weaknesses that gem’s can fix, while the existing top tiers get dimished rewards from gems. Therefore making the game more balanced instead of less. How can you establish that and decide at a later date?

yea this is my main fear sir. I’m not sponsored by capcom so not only would this feature add to the time of the tournament being completed, but it will also add cost to running this game at my event. Of course if the community wants to play it then i’ll have it at Final Round, but atleast I won’t have that problem this year! Final Round 15 ends 2 days before sfxt hits the streets. Now if capcom wants too send me advance copies so we can have final build casuals on display then please contact me here or on www.finalround.org

they said there is no way to cut them off or am i wrong?

You can’t take the gems out, but you’re able to not chose any gems and enter the match with 0 equipped, so in a tournament it’s easy to ban it.

what we know is that gems arent a difrent mode, gems can be disabled, but you can chose not use any gem (as far as i know for the last one)

if that’s the case, then we might have a way to apply the ban. I was really worried about turning a sf game into a yugioh game. With gems= trap cards! The biggest problem is making this game fit within a tournament structure. We all know that cvs2 is the game that takes the longest to complete in the history of our community. If the gem system makes sfxt run longer than cvs2 then I would lean towards banning all gems. As of right now we’ll let the community decide what or how they would like to play this game. No ban at this point and time is the safe way to go IMO.

Comparing gems to M:TG isn’t a close comparison by any means; it is the same as League of Legends as was mentioned earlier. I agree with Shin on the no ban; it sucks that this will add stress to the tournaments and as much as I hate the idea for it, we really need to let this ride and either die or succeed on its own.

Does this mean that SFxT is going to be announced for Evo all random like MK9 or is the staff going to wait it out and see what happens?

Also, they did said that they’re willing to change the system to fit the community needs better, so if people actually like it but it have to be banned for X and Y reasons, they can just change it so we can keep gems

That’s why I said we only allow the most obvious ones at first. We know how a 5% damage increase is going to affect a characters gameplay and whether or not it will break them. Make it easy on TO’s and then after time we’ll eventually figure out what gems will work and which won’t. Who said anything about taking online play into account?

His point is that you won’t know which ones are broken until someone use them in a Tournament and rape everyone.

Remember people saying Wolverine sucked?

I rather allowing everything at first and if necessary banning some gems or all gems. I don’t know about starting with some gems already banned tbh

What I meant is: If we’re not allowing all gems in high level offline competitive play, how do you expect people to find out how the gems will affect tournaments if they’re not being used?

There’s no point in banning things just because they might be broken in theory.

I doubt they will ban “broken gems”.
-ban all
-ban all exclusive / dlc
-ban none

these are the only options to this point.
