Personally I think PP is a decent measure of skill, but the problem is that its a bit faulty. I remebered reaching 2500PP+ and feeling all rad, went offline and had a difficult time, since then I havent touched online due to connection speed issues, I assume in Japan it is a more accurate measure but really shouldnt be over relied on.
Are we forgetting that the SF4 netcode is trash unlike GGPO or Cross Tekken rollback?
Edit: Getting 4k PP is not hard, if you don’t run into bad match ups or the occasional random player that will random you out. In a good day where everything seems favorable…yes getting 4k is very possible. I have reached it twice…now I am back to 2800 PP due to lack of playing. Don’t trust Player Points…Battle Points are actually somewhat useful.
I will say the point system in this game is bullshit. I’m fine with diminishing returns the higher one goes up the ranks on wins but sweet Jesus this game kicks you in the balls for even one random ass loss.
The points system would work out better if you couldn’t cherry pick opponents and you had to remain active in ranked matches.
The 2 biggest problems with placing value behind the current rankings is that about 90% of the people out there hand pick opponents based on matchups or opponent’s amount of points. and then once they reach the level that defines good in their mind they don’t play ranked for fear of losing points.
Can’t count the number of times I’ve been in the low 2k’s for whatever reason, fought a dude with over 3.5k, lost in a nail bitter, and been denied a run back.
I dunno, I feel like unless I can hold them consistently against all challengers, then I don’t want em.
Good point. Not that I agree with your implication, but we’re all going to have different views on what a good player is or isn’t.
You might see a good player with 4k pp . The next guy might see a player with a gimicky one and done strategy built around winning singular ranked matches
Obviously 5000+. Lag tactics and gimmicks can only get you so far. If someone reaches this level you know they know their way around match ups and can obviously adapt to any play style. Most pro players I see online are over 5000pp and if you play them you definitely see a difference in skill.
Saying there are shit players at 4k+ PPs means nothing. Of course there are exceptions, of course there are players who gain PPs without earning them. The question was, in general, what’s the amount of PPs an honest player “should” have?
There are people who earn money without earning it, but it doesn’t mean money is irrelevant to determine if someone is rich or not…
The more you play offline against smart players the more you realize just how much stupid crap there is online. It’s almost to the point where I don’t even play Akuma online any more.
Against smart players yes, but let’s not be silly there are just as many flowcharters offline. But it is easier to handle, you can hear them mashing and without any lag it’s less of a problem.
This is a pretty silly thing to ask for a fighting game, rating points should only matter to RTS games in my opinion. I hover between 2000 and 3000 points daily. I beat like 7 people in a row who are all like 1000-1900, and I get like 300 points for the effort, if I am lucky, then I lose one game to a guy who has 1600 points and lose more than a third of that, even though he is clearly equal skilled as me despite his lower rating. In short term, use the points as to see where you are with yourself, don’t use them to figure you are special. My personal high in points is 3200+.
But see that’s the thing, online rewards that style of play while offline does not. As a consequence the flow charters online tend to get more wins than they should.
It seems as if Ibuki and Cammy players start with 3000 player points initially as I do not recall fighting a decent Ibuki player and White Gun is no different as he is within my cities scene and he still play the same off-line as he does on-line.
I do not consider player points relevant as I have played a handful of 5000+ player point players who were absolute trash in endless, but I do not play ranked. I can lose to some ridiculous play as I rely on single button inputs and normals for AA which can ruin me if there is moderate input delay.
