How much PP does a "good" player have?

I know points aren’t a 100% accurate way to measure someone’s skill level. But how much PP would someone have to have to make you pause and think “oh crap this guys good, I better bring my A game”?

In all honesty here.
0pp

Online isn’t serious and w/ lag and various factors affecting play you’re essentially aren’t even playing the game as intended.
You could study frame data all day and know your matchups to a "T"
You’re only going to get better playing offline.

Id say most people on PC who have 2000+ will already give you a good fight, and 3000+ actually is pretty random… sometimes they use gimmicks which makes it evident how they got their points (eg: spam unsafe moves at the end of blockstrings when they ended it with a - on block move, spam srk when being combod/in blockstrings/after being jumped in on, etc.) but sometimes they are simply just good at the game

I know players in my area who are over 4KPP, myself i’m usually somewhere between 2500-3000PP. But when we play in local tournaments sometimes i’ll beat them, so I think that doesn’t mean crap at the end.

I have a bajilliongazillion PPs, get on my level bitches.

In other words like that word I made up it doesn’t mean shit maybe except perhaps in japan. Their point system is not based off online play I dont think.

Yeah, plenty of people scam that system.

I noticed recently here in Japan there are a number of players deliberately lowering PP by setting up short, 1 round fights with the auto-fire on and losing.

@DanDan: I see what you’re saying but I also disagree. A “good” player (whether measured by points, ability, performance etc) knows how to adapt to lag etc. Sure, in a sense the game is misfiring but I compare it to a smokey arcade with a lot of people, loud sounds, bad smells, verbal sparring etc. They’re all distractions/interference and you just have to adapt.

Also the advantage of playing online is that you get to see some of the bullshit that people lay down playstyle wise. Even if you lose because of lag (I don’t even get salty anymore about it and just accept it - I mean there are some moves I never miss but online lag can stuff some of my easiest set ups) it’s educational.

@Alex: sometimes it’s matchup. Some people just don’t know how to play against certain characters/playstyles. Love him or hate him, I’m an ElFuerte main and have on several occasions crushed 2k+ PP shoto characters because they either don’t know the matchup or have only experienced one type of Elf playstyle. Hell, I’ve caught a 1.5K+ Cammy in a tostada mixup to KO before… I still can’t believe I got away with it… Considering I almost always lose to Cammy.

There are plenty of players who boost points, and plenty who hardly play ranked (50pp) but are better than most 3000pp players.

Actually I wanted to mention that, the Ryu player that I beat who is 4K+PP didn’t seem to have a lot of experience in the Seth matchup. Afterwards he asked me some advice and shit. But it’s surprising that a player at this level still don’t know this matchup, I mean Seth has been in the game since Vanilla.

Having 4k PP doesn’t really indicate a skill level.

About as much as I have, whatever that number may be at any particular moment.

You know what’s proven to be a bitch to me? getting to A rank, having a bad streak and trying to climb back up to 15k. PP is mostly dependant on who you find, obviously it’s going to be harder to keep a high PP if you run into players such as Wolfkrone, CJ Truth or someone like that, just as it is going to be harder to keep a high PP if you play Hawk and you have a streak of 5 Blankas on 8 matches or some stuff like that. The most I’ve gotten is around 4000, that was on a day where I found a ton of Guys, Dudleys and the twins, for some reason, next day was Sagat, Dhalsim and Akuma central and went back to my usual 3000k. I honestly believe that outside of the 5k PP guys who mantain it without giving a care to the world you shouldn’t care about it.

I usually hover around 3k myself. I consider myself utterly average at the game. There are just too many factors that go into it to put a definite number on points correlating to skill.

My PP is based on who I am using at the time. If I’m not using my main and tooling around with a new character, my PP tanks. Not that it matters.

@weedian: I think that ‘scamming’ thing is just people messing with a new character, and not wanting to get matched up with people who will stomp them without mercy. They pick a new character and lower their PP and slum in the lower ranks to practice without having to sacrifice the BP of their main.

@a_toolkit

Prolly so, wish I had that kind of time and nous for strategy, though…

Doesn’t matter at all. I’ve seen replays of 4kPP+ players jumping around nonstop and just mashing.

Online play is so different from offline arcade matchs.
Online you can get away with stupid stuff like on a yellow bar connection Ken does DP HP land or Blanka does Ultra on Ryu, Ryu blocks and still cant punish.

Even on green bar matchs the jitter can mess your timing up.

I voted 4kPP as those guys can block :stuck_out_tongue:

To OP, you seriously forgot the possibility with 0,000 PP, you should add it. Sako says “Hi”

5000 because chances are you had to win a lot to get there

My PP is big and hairy!

As much as his/her/its bladder can hold, gypsy.
