How many Fightsticks is too many?!

Hi,

So I just wanted people’s opinion in regards to how many fightsticks people think is sufficient for there needs!? I have just gotten the 2nd fightstick I’ve ever owned, a Venom Arcade Stick and after getting Sanwa parts and installing a Kowal Actuator and a 4lb spring it’s immense!!

Thing is, I’m kinda already thinking of buying another and modding it in a different colour scheme with maybe a 2lb spring but am also thinking can I justify the cost as I will totally admit I’m no fighting game expert and only play on PC/PS4 at home lol!!

I can see this new “hobby” becoming quite expensive!!!

Many thanks!!!

Cool. I’ve always had the mindset to find (1) Good stick that works well for almost everything, and sticking to that. I’ve never been the hoarding type or one to hold onto multiples of something. In your situation i’d probably be looking to sell the stick i least preferred.

The only way i could see having more than one stick, is if you run into a system that doesn’t like adaptors. So having a legit hacked PCB for that console as part of the build is best for compatibility. My memory is fuzzy after all these years but i seem to remember the Dreamcast was a bit picky. If you took a stick made for another system and tried to use an adapter to make it compatible with the DC, it didn’t always work well.

I only own sticks that I know I will use and the parts inside each stick won’t be the same as the other. I own 3 sticks and I think that’s too many but each has their purpose.

My main stick is my Panzer 3 with a UFB for current gen consoles and has Hayabusa stick and ps-14-gn buttons. Basically all the parts I love for my dream stick.

Second stick is my custom PS360+ stick for retro consoles like Dreamcast and PS2, etc. LS-32 stick with PS-14-KN buttons. AKA My shmup stick haha.

Last is my Hori Rap 4 Kai. Its the stick that I take to tourneys and such. It has Sanwa joystick with PS-14-G buttons. I just wanted to own something officially licensed by Sony just in case something is screwy with the panzer.

Any more for me would be overkill. It’s fine collecting arcade stick for your hobby but just make sure you aren’t using money that you need to live.

I definitely have more than I need, but they each serve their own purpose:

  1. Hori VLX Kuro (LS-40 and PS-14K) - My main PS3/PS4 stick at home.

  2. Mad Catz Tatsunoko vs Capcom Fightstick (LS-40 and PS-14-KN) - Modded for PS3/PS4, this one is my “portable stick” since the VLX is too big to carry around.

  3. custom ABS Modular stick - Stick and buttons are modular panels, internals uses my custom project boxes (so it can be used for anything). This one is both my all-purpose at-home stick, and my guest-stick; the modular aspect helps me with that. This used to be my main/only stick, but the solid ABS frame made it pretty heavy to carry around to local meet-ups.

  4. custom Happ/IL stick (Happ Competition stick and IL clear concave pushbuttons) - Uses my custom project boxes for internals. This stick was made over a weekend using spare/scrap parts (and no dedicated internals), mainly for the option of using American-style parts. It rarely ever gets used…

  5. custom 2-player arcade cabinet (LS-32 and PS-14KN, JLF and OBSC) - For the arcade feels. Also uses my custom project boxes, so it’s adaptable for anything down the line. Mostly only used when guests are around since there’s only an X360 in there for SF4 and HDR.

  6. Sega 2L12B control panel with NOU-2001 overlay (both JLF and OBSF) - Mainly used to bring to small local conventions for attendees to play on. I’ve never used this at home.

  7. fake Sega 2L12B control panel (both Hori Hayabusa and Kuro) - Like above, also a stick brought around to gatherings for people (other than myself) to play on. Still a WIP (for 2 years now…)

  8. Sega 1L6B control panel with Versus City overlay (JLF and OBSF) - would this even count? It’s been on long-term loan to my sister-in-law for about 2-3 years now, but once I make her own personal stick this year, this one’s coming back to me. I haven’t used it since I built it…

Not counting the cabinet, I’d be perfectly fine with just my top 3: One for home (VLX), one to carry-around (TvC), and one for everything else (ABS).

I have 2 for home, one is jlf another is Korean. I have saturn pad that’s only purpose is fighting games, and a fightstick alpha for on the go.
If I get into the competitive scene near me, I’ll see what I want from a stick then

It’s never too many as long as it’s in your budget and you find joy from collecting!
I tried to collect a variety of arcade sticks.

  1. Razer Panthera - Hayabusa + sanwas used for tournaments because of portability

  2. Madcatz TE modded to hitbox (UFB) - Just wanted to try a hitbox configuration, to my surprise it’s pretty great.

  3. Madcatz SE - basic madcatz SE with full sanwa, got it from a friend

  4. Madcatz VS Edition - Quad modded - second soldering project.

  5. Hori Fighting Stick VX - my first stick ever modded it with sanwa parts and started dremelling on it. Made it into an eight button stick.

  6. Hori VX-SA - all sanwa, first padhack project (x360, ps3, ps4) s/o’s main stick now.

  7. Hori VLX - Crown 309MJ + Sanwas with UFB wanted to try a korean stick.

  8. Qanba Dragon Prototype - Picked it up just for the unique aesthetics compared to other Dragons. I don’t even touch this sadly.

I mainly use the Panthera for all, but switch to hitbox to mix it up, and I use my Madcatz VS as a second player controller.

As LLeg3nd said, “as long as you aren’t using money to live”.
Own as many fightsticks you want. As long as you’re having fun that’s good enough.

I’ve got 3, a Mayflash F300 full sanwa that I lend to friends so they learn to play on stick for when they come to play, a Hori RAP Tekken Edition that is my main stick and a Razer Panthera as my player 2 stick, but i’m thiking on getting the TES+ Shadaloo stick because it looks just too awesome.

I had at one point 35 plus MAS Sticks. I had a personal stick for every game, plus many left over for guests. I’ve downsized quite a bit, but I still have around 25 or so.

  1. Mad Catz TE (black w/ UFB, JLF & OBSF-30) - my main stick
  2. Mad Catz SE (white w/ UFB, JLF & OBSF-30) - my kid’s stick…when he gets a little older. Now it’s for wife/guests
  3. Neo Geo MVS themed TEK-Case (w/ PS3/4 Fight Bd., LS-40-01 & PS-14-G)
  4. Astro City themed TEK-Case (w/ PS3/4 Fight Bd. w/ LS-32-01 & PS-14-GN)
  5. Sega Saturn Virtua Stick (w/ JLF & OBSF-30)
  6. (Another one just like above)
  7. Sega Dreamcast Agetec Stick (w/ JLF & OBSF-30)
  8. (Another one just like above)

The TEK Cases are pretty much just shelf showpieces, and the player 2 Sega sticks live life mostly in my closet—so it’s basically 4. I’m thinkin’ that I might still have too many, but the wife ain’t complaining anymore (since a previous partial liquidation) …so I’m happy.

I own 10
1 vlx kuro, 1 vlx 360, 1 te r1 ps3, 1te r1 360, 1 te soul edition ps3, 1 te-s 360, 1 atrox with ufb, 1 custom wooden stick by shadaloo.eu w ps360+, 1 VS 360 and 1 hrap3 with brook ps4 board.

I enjoyed collecting these sticks, but i find myself going to the atrox most of the time, and storage is an issue for me. Alot of my closet space is taken by these sticks, and i have an issue storing all my other stuff because of that.

You can never have enough!

  1. Madcatz SE PS3 (stock but will be modded with Sanwa Parts, Gummo Replacement home PCB, and UFB)
  2. MK9 TE PS3
  3. Razor Atrox XBONE
  4. Asciiware 6 button Sega Genesis
  5. AFS all white with MC Cthulhu (WIP, case bought from @jopamo)
  6. I may have missed one.

i think the thread has gone off topic, most of the replies should go here How many arcade Stick's do you Own? and do you use every single one you own?

I’m currently sitting on 4 arcade sticks, and 4 panels for my candy cabinet.

2 are fight sticks - JLF’s w/ square gates and all sanwa buttons
1 is a shmup stick - Seimitsu parts, featuring a LS-58 /w octo gate.
1 is a dedicated pinball stick (mostly for Devil’s/Alien Crush on PCE) - no joystick, just side buttons.

All my sticks have MC Cthulhu, but the fighter sticks have Brook UFB’s in there additionally.

My NAC panels consist of:

  • 2L12B
  • 2L6B
  • 1L6B
  • Custom SmashTV 2 player panel (featuring 4 sanwa jlf’s with octo’s)

As you can see I cater to fighting games, shmups and other more specific controls needed for certain games. I think this is the most I will carry, though I think a dedicated “Classics” stick would be nice. Something that only has a 2 or 4-way gate and a couple buttons.

Yeah agreed that it kind of went a little off-topic (I’m guilty of that anyways :D)

In regards to how many is “too many”, aside from any obvious financial restrictions or obligations, I think that when you get to a point where you have sticks that aren’t being used at all, that’s the “too many” point.

Going back to my initial post here: I listed 8 sticks (or “sets” of sticks) in my collection. Everything other than the 3 that I use regularly (my at-home-stick, my portable-stick, and my all-purpose/guest-stick) can be considered to have crossed into the “too many” zone.

But that number might be different for each person. One can have one super-ultra stick that does everything, so anything more than 1 stick is too many for them. Another person can have one stick for fighters, one for shmups, one for retro consoles, etc… the number of “in-use” sticks for this person would be much higher.

i think too many is only when you decide you need some money and there are some in your collection you can flip and wont be missed

i used to have over 60, maybe even 70

over past 2 years i have got it down to around 30 to 40

now all ive got is the complete TE set, and about 5 each of the og and diamond VLX’s and a a few VSHG’s and the ones i have for sale in trading outlet

i think eventually they will all go except for my six axis VLX’s, at the moment though i am keeping them,

for me its like having the complete WWF sticker book from back in the day, i liketo have a complete set

No such thing as too many my brother

Unless you’re being practical in which case the answer is 1 for each system you plan on playing on

I think more than 4 is actually too many, mainly because games usually take up to 4 controllers so any more than that won’t really be used that much unless it’s specifically made for a certain type of game, but even if that were the case, it could still be used as a secondary stick for a fighting game or whatever.

-Sfv Tes+ (6 button, all gold sanwa & gold ball top)
-ps4 jap Vlx (6 button sanwa, jlf)
-hrap4 kai (6 button sanwa, jlf bat top, qanba circle gate)
-hrap2 (6 button sanwa, jlf, used for ps2 only)
-ps1 Namco (untouched…as of yet)
-Venom (dismantled, possible project coming)
-neogeoX (dismantled, still in two minds for mod)
-umvc3 ps3 hrap (untouched)
-dreamcast Ascii SNK version (broken vmu)

I mainly just use the tes+ these days, the artwork is sick so didnt need to change it, gold mod goes perfect. The odd time I switch to the hrap4 kai for the bat top and circle gate as I can’t afford a Mas.

Looking at this thread I don’t feel bad about having too many sticks. Ftw hell yeah

Someone should ask MarkMan that question. Lol
