Whenever Bas is in town, we try our best to get some CvS2 in no matter how much he beats our asses. You can tell how much he loves the game by how he’s willing to play it with a bunch of low levels like us (on a PS3 with input lag).
The key of longevity for a game is not how much frequently is patched, but how deep and fun is to play, balance can be also something that can help the game, but as we saw some games like 3s and mvc2.
Of course it also helps that you have a community or at least a group of people to play with.
MvC2 = 10 years.
Super Turbo = 15 years.
Hyper Fighting = 19 or 20 years have seen my Blanka come down on your fucking head.
CvS2 = 12 years, on and off…
Third Strike = 7 years, on and off, but mostly off.
World Heroes Perfect = 17 years, on and off…
Super SF4 = 1. I stopped playing when Arcade Edition was announced, about a year later…
MvC3 = I stopped playing caring when UMvC3 was announced… Like 2 months later…
a mainstream game can be played for decades as long as the community is willing to play it. any game can be played forever as long as there’s competition for it.
@jimmy1200 someones gotta speak up for us old timers!
@d3v I forgot Bas was just down there! How did you guys hang? I don’t even bother playing CvS with him, its hard enough to beat him in 3s and he doesnt give a shit about that game lol
What do you mean by playing? Do you mean competitively or just playing a game at all whether it be competitively or casually? If competitively then I don’t play many games due to not having a scene but casually I play a whole bunch of fighting games patch or not. The only thing that matters is that as long as the game is fun then I’m going to keep playing it.
Edit: I have always wondered why are so many people opposed to patches or updates?
I’m opposed to having to relearn major components of matchups constantly.
I’m also opposed to games getting patches that aren’t needed, just because there are people that wouldn’t take the time enough to just work around it.
Example:
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - The fuck did Sentinel get nerfed, but Phoenix and Wolverine left alone? That was a horrible response to something that wasn’t even a problem.
Counter example - If they did the same thing to MvC2, Iceman would have been nerfed, rendering him practically useless. Imagine how much more polarized that games tiers would have been if they nerfed the original top tier list? (Doom, Iceman, Cable, Hayato, Guile were all considered First or second tier, Magneto, Storm, and Sentinel were mid tier at best)
We usually just play at the hotel when he’s busy with business stuff. Thus last tine though, we actually got to take him to a big gathering at a friend’s place. He must’ve played SFIV for nearly 4-5 hours straight (till 3AM) while knocking down Red Horses. We tried to entice him to play VSav and CvS2, but he was grinding that SF pretty hard. He may not like the game, but he sure enjoys having decent competition.
When a game’s been out for years and then gets a balance update or a patch after there’s been a lot of statistics about the game available, that can help breathe new life into a game if the update is properly handled. HDR vs. +R for instance.
If a game is constantly being patched every two or three weeks, then players have to constantly relearn stuff over and over again. It helps draw in more casual players who never really want to advance to a competitive level, since it means that if enough people think something is overpowered or underpowered, the company will fix it for them instead of them having to learn how to deal with it. On the other hand, it means the game can never really be left on its own to develop and mature competitively, since there’s no real benefit in learning counters to something that’s powerful if you know that the powerful thing is going to be nerfed in the next update, so even competitive players just abuse whatever they can. But if the company has enough money to throw at the competitive scene to keep both the competitive and casual players playing regardless of change, that will keep the game active for better or for worse.
I don’t see the fun in playing MOBA’s competitively anyway.
Too much of a hitscan fest for my tastes.
I play them as party games to chill out with some friends once in a while. I could see myself getting into a moba styled game competitively, but it’s gonna have to be something more then “click, click, click because we’re all too lazy to base our control scheme and combat off anything but a ten year old Warcraft 3 mod”.
Off topic, I know, but I couldn’t help myself since someone brought up LoL lol.
I’ve always wondered what a MOBA/fighting game hybrid would look like. MOBA style win conditions but without the leveling and archaic RTS based combat.
I guess you can simulate that somewhat with some of the team based modes of Anarchy Reigns, though not quite.
Personally I’m fine with the rpg elements. The idea of a competitive, team based action rpg appeals to me, I just feel that way too many games are too clicky and hit scanny to really be called “action”.
