Some players like Nappynightmares AKA Bronxprettyboy AKA Snappinonniggas seem to be able to make the game lag exactly when they start losing how is this possible? Others like Snake Eyes (who I’ve been told has been accused of using some sort of device by Sirlin) and Uber Cyber Ryu seem to get the most impossible spd ticks 100% of the time regardless of ping.
Are these kinds of players just skilled at playing in lag or is something else going on and if so what exactly? I’ve heard of many players being accused of cheating but no one seems to know specifically what they’re doing to get a supposed unfair edge. I’ve gotten many messages from players accusing me of using a lag switch WTF is that?
Also compiling a list that I’ll update on this post of players to be avoided for exactly this reason wouldn’t hurt.
A lag switch uploads “noise” to your opponent, increasing their lag. Download torrents has a similar effect, but can affect the downloader too.
Then there is turbo which helps with reversals and ticks obviously.
Anyone can be using turbo, and I suspect anyone of turbo if they can mash jabs with no interruption. Sorry if that’s harsh, but it seems unlikely for some people’s level of skill.
Yeah, pretty much they deliberately lag. Same with the fast jabs - how is that possible? What exactly did Sirlin say about Snake Eyes? The dude strikes me as just a really good player, but somehow he always seems to get right in the perfect SPD range. Though I guess that’s what makes someone a master with Zangief.
Another easy way to detect lag is if you see a clearly inexperienced player hitting a certain version of a move on reversal every. single. time. (i.e. opponent hits jab SPD or jab DP on reversal every time, even though he probably can’t even do a 2-in-1). I could easily be wrong about that, but it would seem weird that a person could perfectly hit those and the rest of his/her fundamentals are clearly lacking horribly.
I’ve heard a lot of people claim that SnakeEyes has to be cheating somehow with his SPD prowess, but when you think about it the whole damn point of the new easier non-360 motions was to do exactly as he does, walk in and out of max SPD range and snag you when you least expect it. Not many people can do it convincingly and I don’t think there’s anyone better online than SnakeEyes when it comes to walkup SPDs.
A lot of people also like to claim “OMG Macro User!!1!” without realizing it is:
A. A HUGE pain in the ass to set up for the 360 (less so for PS3, but still a PITA).
B. Fairly fucking complicated to use in the heat of battle for most moves.
As for purposely lagging a match, that one always mystified me. For fighting games there is no real purpose to do it because it fucks both parties up. It isn’t like a FPS where you can glitch out an advantage. IMO, this usually is the case of ether a shitty ISP or people not realizing that downloading shit while playing ping-critical online games is a dumb thing to do.
If you piano the jab button with 2 fingers it’s pretty easy to do an almost constant stream of jabs. Sometimes it looks funny on the other guys screen because if there’s any rollback sometimes it looks like his jab is always out since it skips the first couple frames.
However, you can usually tell the difference between someone who is pianoing the button and someone using turbos. The sound of the piano person’s jabs will have at least some slight variation, since nobody is a robot. The turbo guy will have a constant rhythmic noise. Also, watch to see if they always cancel a jab into LP fireball/SRK/etc. instead of just doing the move. Sometimes you’ll hit the button early by accident and cancel but turbo players seem to have a habit of holding down the button and doing this all the time.
Honestly, especially in lag, I find it hard to easily determine if someone is using turbos vs just being a good player. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt. But every once in a while they make it really obvious. If that happens I usually just play a bit differently since they’ll almost always go for reversal or spam crap out. Often, you can use it against them to bait stuff. That, or I find another room…
It’s one of the major issues with online play. If there are that many ragequitters out there, just consider how many more folks have no qualms using turbo or start downloading/uploading to create slowdown in order to to gain an unfair advantage. It’s pretty much impossible to tell who’s using turbo; if they were any good, they should be able to execute reversals and links with 100% success but from my experience against proven turbo users, none of them get reversals more than I do (about 60-70% success rate), which pretty much means they’re pitiful at natural reversal timing.
Ultimately, if the other player doesn’t play in offline tourneys (where he would have a large vested interest in playing straight), I’m not sure what to believe if the other player is executing large combos, constant reversals, or always managing to pull out the throw. Just try to do what you can and then prove your skills offline.
I’m always very suspicious of turbo when a player who can reverse every (or nearly every) Oicho tick attempt with a normal throw, especially if it’s a character with s SRK or some other reversal move, yet they never attempt it and always go for and get the throw.
Also, players who always take a hit of the HHS (perhaps missing their reversal) and immediately retaliating and always hitting me back with a normal attack (low strong with Ryu/Ken for example).
Like JohnnyV said, it’s not hard to get out rapid jabs but you have to watch the rhythm of the jabs.
Snakeeyez is news to me, exactly what did Sirlin say…Maybe he’s butthurt that he cant beat him in his own game with an 8-2 advantage:rofl: This really got me curious on how he’s cheating.
The only cheating i know of is lag switch, turbo, & akuma…
I was playing a few people who were using turbo yesterday. It’s really frustrating. Especially because I’m aleady not a very good player. It’s annoying when all of a sudden every character has a hundred hand slap. For the most part I would just hadoken everytime I thought he might turbo. It worked a few times.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure Snake Eyez is legit, I remember someone talking about him showing up at some local tourney and doing well. No idea on where you got that rumor from.
On topic though, there really is such a thing as being good at playing in lag. You need to shift your playstyle a bit away from reaction and towards prediction, and depending on the severity of lag, do your inputs earlier than usual (doesn’t apply to HD Remix as much as with other games, but still). In general, defense (including reversals and reaction) is harder in lag, so you can often get away with a recklessly offensive playstyle.
Lag also doesn’t physically change the game unless it’s really heavy (in which case it slows down the game a bit), so good reversalers will still reversal consistently.
To be honest, I find most accusations of “lag-cheating” pretty ridiculous. There is lag on the internet, and some players are better at playing in lag than others. Don’t assume malice when there is a much more probable explanation.
Usually I find that the easiest way to deal with turbo scrubs is just to play some basic zoning. Turbo won’t do shit for them if they can’t get close enough to exploit the massive advantage they have in throws, tight combos etc. It usually works too, because most of these turbo users are scrubs to begin with, they struggle to work round basic fireball traps.
Also forget about crossing them up. Too many times have I attempted to crossup a turbo user only to get thrown the very frame I land. I expect throws on crossup from the likes of Bison and Dhalsim, but with some characters when they have something better to do (eg a really good anti air), it makes me wonder why they risk letting me get so close rather than shooting me down earlier, and how they can be so confident that they will get the throw anyway.
I still question that. Rufus already confirmed that online play shaves startup frames to preserve the game, but are we sure that recovery isn’t being shaved as well?
The type of motion for the reversal needs to be considered. For example, against Vega’s rolling claw, I can reversal DP about 75% of the type. For a reversal super, my percentage goes way up. It’s very rare if I miss one of those.
Oh, and rapid :lp: is pretty easy to do on a stick. Just piano with your index and middle fingers as quickly as possible.
Except that doesn’t help in timing things. Maybe its better on xbox, but PSN HDR has stupid netcode. Plenty of times I’ve hit deep and then get thrown as soon as i land.
