How do I avoid mashing? Improving execution? Avoiding discouragement

Hi, I recently been trying to get into to the genre. I have always liked fighting games, but up until now I had only played them casually and was only able to win matches by randomly mashing buttons. I have been watching videos on Maximilian’s youtube channel for a couple of weeks and remembered him saying on a livestrem that he recommended Injustice for anyone that was trying to get into fighting games right now. So recently picked up the game and this hori mini arcade stick. I have been trying to learn the flash and I feel like i can pull of some of the more basic 30% combos maybe half the time in training mode. Maybe a little less than that, but eventually after i warm up a bit I can get them. The thing Is I feel like I can never apply anything outside of training mode. Like when ever I’m fighting against a person, or even the computer. I don’t know if it’s my lack of hand eye coordination or what. But what I do know is when ever I get into a match my hands are constantly pressing buttons without thinking, it’s like I get panicked right away and I just mash. I spend hours in training mode, trying to get the timing down and stuff, but I just get discourages. The best i can get is like 30% damage with the flash, I can’t even finish the combos most of the time. And when playing against someone i don’t even get close. I been wanting to learn how to play these types of games since I was a little kid in the 90s. When arcades where alive and I would go there and mash buttons until one of the teenagers would come along and just punish me in the game. The thing is I feel like when I ever I try to learn, I get no where. I don’t even know if I’m asking for advice anymore or I just want to vent my frustration. What should I do?

I don’t play Injustice, but you basically have to condition yourself to stop mashing by sheer force of will and to keep your cool. Playing a patient character helps you learn this very quickly. I’d personally recommend SF4 if you’re trying to get into fighting games, since that game teaches you patience better than any other game I know. Of course you’re going to mash and panic. You’re just starting out and you don’t know what to expect. As you keep playing games, you get more familiar with the game mechanics, as well as becoming familiar with characters, things stop being so frightening.

I would do the same exact thing. The best method I found to drop that habit was start with the computer on the lowest difficulty to the point where it would do simple jump-ins and dashes. Having a moving target is the first step that you’re going to have to take in being able to land combos outside of training mode. When you’re battling the comp. out, don’t think about winning. Only look for openings where you can land your BnBs. Once you make the habit of doing so, move on to consistently winning the CPU, and gradually increase its level as you do so.

Of course, there isn’t a better method of practicing than with someone who’s at your skill level. Playing against another [human] player will level both of you up. Plus, on extremely high difficulties, the AI can make some crazy stupid reads that majority of the players around wouldn’t even think about.

As for which game: I started off playing fighting games seriously with Street Fighter X Tekken. Ever since, I’ve played some Tekken, Street Fighter, and loads of Guilty Gear. I can’t exactly recommend that you start off with SFxT, though, as you will have to learn two characters at the same time if you want to keep up with the crowd. So yeah, I would go with either Street Fighter or Injustice (or anything similar i.e. Mortal Kombat). You can try Street Fighter out and see if its game type fits you better than Injustice. If not, then stick with Injustice or if you’re willing to, play the game that you seem to take interest in the most. Playing something you genuinely is probably one of the biggest factors in helping you level your game up at a rather rapid, but stable pace.

If you can’t even land your combos 90% in training mode why are you even attempting them in real matches… I bet you can’t even shoryuken on your first try, if this is true… You need to work on your execution. The problem that a lot of new players tend to have is that they focus SO HARD on trying to land that combo they just learned in training mode. They totally disregard the fundamentals, thus walking into a bunch of standing hard kicks, damage, ect. If this rings a bell you know what to do… This is common for probably 90% of the people that start fighting games, just an estimate though. Remember to have solid execution, solid fundamentals, and just stay confident. I know it might seem hard at first but it’s one of those things that seems hard at first but then later it just clicks and becomes easy mode. Sorry I didn’t mean to sound so blunt at the beginning.

Ps: Injustice is boring, so is Mortal Kombat._.
Buy AE then learn other games, it’s a godlike starter game.

Later on UMvC3 or KoF XIII( If your brave enough)<3

Seriously man, the hyping up of KoF’s difficulty hurts the game.

Playing regularly with someone at a similar level while trying to focus on improving is the best way to level up.

KOF only gets hard with some crazy HD combos… and if you pick Kyo, you don’t even have hard combos.
UMvC3 combos aren’t hard unless you’re talking Viper or Zero or some shit…

What are you doing in training mode? If It’s combos I am going to cunt punch you so hard. What you should be doing in training mode is learning absolutely everything your character can possibly fucking do.

If you’re mashing its because you have no idea what to do aside from the jump in combos you most likely read on some dumb fuck combo list.

1)Learn how to block.
2) Seriously. Learn how to fucking block.
3) Learn your characters normals like the back of your hand.
4) Learn when to use your special moves
5) Learn footsies
6) Learn how to anti air
7) Learn how to apply all this competently against a live opponent (try to avoid online if possible)
8) Learn a BnB or 2 (You don’t need to know 900 combos)

P.S If the combo list you’re looking at says “Jump in HP/HK” Ignore it. If you do happen to pull off a jump in start, then great, but most of the time no one will just allow you to do it, and you’ll just be an easy target to anti air.

Do you have ps3? Im currently new to injustice and trying to get better at it. You should check testyourmight.com for help on a specific character.

Thanks for the advice. I know I probably should have better at execution before entering real matchs, but training mode can be such a chore, I guess I was just feeling frustrated because I just spent the money for the game and the controller and i feel like I stuck in training mode for the rest of my life. Do you have any tips that might help me getting execution a little easier? Because I’ve been in training mode for weeks now and I feel like I’m not making much progress. The whole thing just feels daunting.

Yes I do, someitalian123 on psn

I’m going to say this in a nice way, and for a helpful purpose, but if you have been in training mode for weeks with no progress, then you are doing something wrong. If you explain you training process, people can probably see where the issue with what you are doing and show you how to change your process for better results. And please don’t say that you practice combos in training mode, try to be as descriptive as possible.

Not really training related, but I just wanna tell you to expect that arcade stick to be temporary. You literally get what you pay for with sticks. If you use it regularly, it will crap out before next year is over.

So would you say for starters to simply practice basic specials, get one or two BnBs down and then just focus on footsies and general play overall? This makes sense to me, but I just wanted some clarification. It seems like footsies is one of those things that you can only really learn via a moving target, preferably another person.

Your post was made so much better by the angry looking profile picture that you have.

Training mode is fun. Set character to Auto Block to practice combos.

Turn on input. Use left hand only until input for special moves are 99+% clean. Add in right hand for special after, goal is to clean inputs to 99%+ with right hand involved.

I tried to get into Injustice, but that game is just terrible. People get free jump ins all day, top tier characters are braindead, and footsies do not exist in that game. You just need to learn basic fundamentals.

I do know some good flash combos though:

trait, flash charge x5 %27
11, flash cancel (back back RT), trait, flash kick x4, flash charge
F2 1, flash kick MB, 3 2, flash charge 35% (overhead bnb starter)
D1 D2, flash kick, 3 2, flash charge 31% (low bnb starter)
B22, flash kick MB, trait, flash kick x4, flash charge x2, 3 2, flash charge 52% one bar

Oh and B22 and 11 are good frame traps.

What would you say are the basic fundementals of the game?

OP: I’ll add you and I can record the sets and post them here. I’m also learning a new character so we could both get some be matchup experience.

I would say jump around throw interactables and jump in attacks/cross sups. Jump ins have priority over Anti Airs (there are maybe 3 or 4 characters that have a reliable AA, but thats it). Walk speed is also horrendous and for these reasons footsies in general do not exist. If you watch the top 8 at CEO, you will see the most scrubbiest shit ever (except for Chris G that dude was on point).

I have dropped Injustice. I then picked up AE so that I can improve my execution, footsies, and other fundamentals.

It’s not the greatest game ever, but it’s a fun thing to to with friends. (and still way better than Smash at any rate)

Setting up unblockable interactables off of a hard knockdown is also important.

If you’re just picking up injustice, stop playing the Flash. His playstyle is very offense heavy and you shouldn’t be focusing on that at this point in time. Pick a simple to use character like superman, batman, aquaman, green lantern, or wonderwoman and instead of focusing on their combos and special moves, learn the range and speed of ALL of your characters normal attacks (there aren’t that many) and learn a few ( 2 or 3 ) string moves. Go into training mode and learn which of your normals are fast enough and reach far enough to be used as “punishers” against moves like Green Lanterns “Lantern’s Might”, Aquaman’s “From The Deep”, and other characters key moves. Once you have a complete grasp of what your NORMAL moves do, learn how to use your specials. Finally, learn your characters bnb combos.

The best way to prevent yourself from hitting too many buttons is to cosciously take your right hand away from the buttons on your controller. Every now and the just walk back and forth, (learn how to) block your opponents attacks, and take mental notes. None of those things requires you pressing buttons.

Good luck!

I ment “only if your brave” for KoF not Umvc3. Lol
You are absolutely right, next time ill watch what i say when it comes to this. I’m all for improving the KoF scene, even emailed SnKP and talked to friends about it.
You have to look at it from beginners point of view, KoF does not have the super easy mode lenient input system SF4 does, and is much faster pace… So to them timing seems impossible… in SF4 you can jumping light hit them from the top of the head and still follow it up without much effort.

DONT LISTEN TO ANYTHING MAXIMILLIAN SAYS
