How can any new player get good?

I’m pissed these days at how SF4 is so much more popular than SF3, but then I ask myself:

How the hell can I get good at 3rd strike, or anyone for that matter?

The only realistic and reliable option for online play I know of that can get you decent matches is GGPO, which is where I play.

But its no surprise new players don’t stick around long: How the hell is anyone supposed to have fun and get better?

I’ve gotten -not bad- with Akuma and Dudley, still getting owned by many in there but I can hold my ground just enough so I can deal with them.

Problem is, I’m no pro, or amateur pro, or wannabe pro, whatever. And I want to play other characters, and whatever I do, I just get slaughtered.

I’ve watched thousands of pro matches, heck even practiced with a lot of characters, but its all entirely meaningless if you don’t have experience. But my experience is just getting crushed constantly, all day, again and again.

So… how is anyone supposed to get in the game at all or get good when all there is to play, are people that are way too good for you? Playing better people you have a chance against is fun and can make you better, I get that… but I don’t recall learning anything out of the matches I get destroyed, except that I suck, and they certainly ain’t fun (which is why I’m playing).

What the hell am I supposed to do? I wanted to bring a friend in this too, but screw that, I myself destroy him, no way he can ever get anywhere. Its kind of a weird question here and I certainly have respect to all good players on GGPO, but without lesser players to play with, I have no idea how to get better in general or just have fun at all.

Been playing for 2 years, but hey, maybe I’m missing more basics than I thought? Is there anything to get players in the game or is this now really just an “old pro only” game?

I’ve played all kinds of players on GGPO, so I’m positive there’s at least 3-4 players that are probably near your skill level. When playing someone substantially better than you, then ask for advice. Chances are they’ll be more than willing to help. Also, try to be more patient. The better you are as a player then the longer it takes to improve.

Not everybody is above offering advice and critique on your playstyle. If they’re really beating you down, then ask what you can do to improve. Or ask others. Not a lot of people have gotten better from just sitting at home and playing the computer with absolutely no advice from other players whatsoever(these days, anyway).

A great player once said “you don’t need to play people to improve.”

A couple things I’ll say that can help you though is stick with 1 character. 2 is already too much, and you mention you want to play other characters too, which in my opinion is a waste of time. 3s is not a game of switching characters.

Also, don’t look at the frequency of winning as the sole indicator of improvement. At your stage in the game winning shouldn’t really matter. If you won because you got a bunch of lucky guesses one day, it doesn’t mean you improved. Look at individual situations and see if you handle them better from game to game. Experiment with new baits.

Lastly, if you can, try to hit up players directly (perhaps people you play with online often). Having a mentor can really speed up the learning process. Last year at SBO I met a player who had been playing 3s for only 2 years (half the time I had been playing), and he had qualified for SBO. If you want it enough, you can make big leaps in short periods of time.

Play everyone, get slaughtered but learn from your mistakes…

Won’t be fun in the beginning but as you improve… You’ll see matches becoming more rewarding and enjoyable as the technical aspects increase. Up to you if its worth this early struggle…

Mov cpu training mode guide go!

Same problems for me too, but in my case I’ve been playing 3s for about 4 years and I was playing with ken as main character, then i switched to sf4 but now I’m back to 3s and decided to play and stick with Dudley.
He’s really cool and i love the way he can make pressure and in the other side he’s realy hard to master, I think I have to review my sf basic couse i allway get destroid by scrubs who plays the game randomly (me too  ) and by good player that have the feeling of spacing poking and good combo execution.
The only way to improve as a player IMO is to stick with a main character, like someone sayd before and try to master him in every aspect of the game from basic to advanced stuffs.

This^^ x 9000!!

that only helps certain aspects of a persons game like anti airs and movement

he only told me about using dudley and makoto as the characters to use in order to practice that stuff, but i also heard something about beating the first 2 characters in arcade mode by time out then the rest are supposed to be harder or something (never tried this myself though)

use chun or makoto and youll win 99% of your matches.

use ryu with denjin and youll win 99% of your matches.

Aaaah I wish I could play on ggpo from where Im staying…

Fixed.

I’m a new player too and really love the game, so I’d like to improve and find things to develope and incorporate into my gamplay.

Please, explain, I’m really interested, I’m sure you are referring to MOV training

Again, please, explain in depth, I think antiairs are one of my weaknesses and I’m curious about what I shoul’d train with Dudley and Makoto in trainig mode, and how to do it. Also, why he said you shol’d try to beat cpu by time out? Defense training? Level 8 or default level?

Yes, but you aren’t always so lucky to have pro players near you to explain things and help you :frowning:
Or sometimes you find them, but they get bored to answer your noob question all time :frowning:

First and foremost get your execution down. New people get too caught up in “what to do different to improve” when they can’t even do (or even know) optimal punishes, etc etc. If you’re given an opportunity but can’t follow through and maximize your damage/oki then it’s pointless. Hit that training mode.

wtf is oki

why are you such a weeaboo, goddamn

Yes, of course I already use it for execution, but I was curious about how to improve your general game with it, wich coul’d be a wonderful thing if you are not often likely to play with more experienced players. At least, if it is not good for attack, it woul’d be cool to use training mode to improve defence and fasten reflexes. So, please explain

people who complain about denjin online are simply those who sucks at parrying it.

keep telling yourself that.

roll under that shit
