Hori T5: Modding Tutorial

Just modded that T5 Stick myself how did you change the art? Did you peel off the original first or did you just put that right on it?

Right now it’s just a picture coverd with clear contact paper.

I peeled the original art off, because I’m planning to switch to a picture covered with plexiglass or lexan in the future. The corners and the sides are a little off, and I’m unfortunately a perfectionist.

On that note, does anyone know anyone who currently cuts plexiglass? I saw some threads but I haven’t gotten any responses = (

Thanks everyone for the wealth of info in this guide. I just bought all of the materials I need to get started and was wondering if I used lexan to cover my artwork on the tekken 5 stick…would this replace the metal faceplate. I think the sheet I bought from lowe’s will be too thick and it was the thinnest one they had…

Also if I go the contact paper route with the artwork, what kind of paper should I print my art on…or would I just do better laminating and gluing my art to the metal panel? Oh yea and any ideas as to what kind of glue?

Lexan won’t be able to replace the metal faceplate since you need something for your joystick to mount to.

Hi TingBoy…just wondering, if I were to use a JLF, how do I wire it to the 5 pin wire harness. I used a JLW in my first mod because I didnt know how to deal with this issue. I would rather use a JLF next time because it can use the same four mounting holes I believe.

im not tingboy but i have put a JLF in my t5 so i think i can answer this correctly

first a useful picture found in sanwa/seimitsu faq

quote from from a t5 modding tutorial:
"Wiring layout.
(reading from the top down on the back side of the PCB where the joystick wires come from)

Of each pair of colored wires, the first one is the common ground.
Common grounds are all soldered to the prong on the microswitch that reads "COM"
Joystick wires will be soldered to the prong that reads “NO” for “normally open”

Therefore the eight wires will equate to:

8 as seen on the PCB
Grey 1 = Common ground
Grey 2 = Joystick Right
White 1 = Common ground
White 2 = Joystick Left
Yellow 1 = Common ground
Yellow 2 = Joystick Down
Red 1 = Common ground
Red 2 = Joystick Up
1 as seen on the PCB"

basically what you do is connect the black wire thats on the 5 pin harness to any one of the common ground wires coming out of the PCB. any ground wire is ok because theyre all at the same potential (thats what common ground means). the other ground wires you can tie off or just leave them hanging (probably better to tie it off).

then you just hook up the colored direction wires to the other wires coming out of the PCB depending how you put the joystick in. for example if you put in the stick with the harness facing DOWN, then your red wire coming out of the harness (joystick right) would be connected to the 2nd gray wire on the pcb.

and yes you can still use the 4 mounting holes

Thanks Domino. I see now. Okay simple enough.
As for the mounting holes, I still have to drill out 4 holes on the restrictor plate on the JLF. Those 4 holes should line up right?

Without the mounting plate, yes. Here’s a pic

Thank you…the JLF seems alot easier to mount than JLW-TM, like I did with this mod. I would’ve much rather not made any more holes on the existing mounting plate. The humiragames site tutorial didnt have any more pictures up so it was hard to tell what they were talking about.
Thanks Domino and Tingboy for answering my questions.

aggrastat that looks really nice inside! 3 quick questions…

  1. What kind of wires did you use?
  2. What size quick disconnects did you use?
  3. how is your pcb secured?

I secured the pcb using a pcb standoff, similar to the ones pictured. I was only able to find them online, but any plastic pcb standoff with a flat base will do. I superglued it to the inside of the arcade stick. You can still remove the pcb if you wanted to by lifting them of the spike part. I also hot glued a couple more (one the side, and one by the wire connector) but you can peel off the hot glue if you wanted to detach it completely. I hot glued those because there are NO existing holes for those. It’s mainly for support, but it’s fairly secure once the glue has cured.

thanks man will get to it asap as soon as my supplies come in

seeing how search is not working for me… could any one tell me what wire is 3v coming out out the controller cable/pin connector (tekken 5 stick pcb of course). Hooking this up to the 5v of an madcatz 360 stick.

Hi,

I am in the process of modding my t5 stick and I was wondering, for the pcb, which of the two holes when looking at the beige side is the hole that I should use for ground.

Also whichever side the ground is, is it the same for all the other buttons and can I just run one wire from each hole to the appropiate button without daisy chaining.

If you’re going to use Japanese parts (Sanwa/Seimitsu), don’t bother with this. Either prong can be ground and there’s no need to daisy chain.

If you’re going to go the Happ route + large amounts of modding, then I can’t help you out.

Does this go for the joystick as well, because I marked what I thought was the ground on the wires going to the JLW.

No. Joysticks use different types of microswitches which require you to hook up the right wire to the right prong.

For JLW’s, the bent prong = ground prong. Connect the other wire to the straight prong closest to the ground prong.

does any one have a link for the missing picutures on page one? i really want to do this…but no more pictures :frowning: half of the directions are missing :frowning:

I’ll try to post some pics of the mod I did. Been busy… so be patient. Have to resize them upload them etc etc. I did mine a bit different, but the overall concept is the same.

I’ll post up my pictures, although its only a few showing where to drill through the gate for the screws to mount the joystick. IMO, though tedious, installing the buttons is pretty self explanatory. Desolder buttons, remove from plate, dremel metal tabs in each button hole, solder new wires to PCB, put in new buttons, connect wires to buttons.

Edit: I haven’t finished the mod yet (too lazy), but here’s what I’ve done to it so far

You need to remove the mounting plate on your JLF, then drill through the gate where my screws are located. They line up perfectly with the holes on the mounting bracket on the T5 plate.
