thanks dude
is the stock stick in hrap3 good enough ?
the stock stick on a hrap3 is a sanwa jlf … if you like sanwa its good enough … if you prefer happ than you have to test it yourself … but the quality of the stick is top notch and it wont die on you that fast
thanks for the reply ;]
p.s. a little off topic, who’s the anime character in your avatar ?
SRK, I need help.
Someone here in Malaysia is going to be ordering some SANWA parts, and he’s looking for other people to buy in bulk + share shipping costs, so I have a few questions:
-
I heard the HRAP 3 (which I have) is easily moddable. Any step by step guides with pics? I’ve been looking at Essential Joystick Thread but couldn’t find a link.
-
What parts should/can be ordered? I’m happy with the stick that the HRAP3 has, but I’m worried if it’ll turn bad. Mainly, I wanna change the buttons.
He also posted some parts + rough idea of Malaysian prices. I’ll be quoting them in spoiler tags to keep them short, but I have more questions after though.
SANWA parts
[details=Spoiler]3) All price excludes shipping:
Sanwa OBSF-30 / OBSN-30 Pushbutton = RM12
Sanwa OBSF-24 / OBSN-24 Pushbutton = RM10
Sanwa OBSM Series 24/30mm Hole Plug = RM7
Sanwa GT-Y Octagonal Restrictor Plate = RM20
Sanwa GT-8N 4/8-Way Restrictor Plate = RM20
Sanwa Joystick Adapter = RM2
Sanwa LB-35 Joystick Ball Top = RM24
Sanwa JLF-TP8Y-SK Ball Handle Joystick, stock square gate = RM85
[/details]
So basically, if I want to just change the face buttons, I’ll be looking at the Sanwa OBSF-30/OBSN-30?
Thus, if I’m right, the HRAP3 uses snap in buttons, right? So I’ll be looking at the OBSF-30, correct (based on the SANWA faq guide)?
And are the buttons sold each or in sets?
My apologies if something like this has already been asked (it probably has) but I couldn’t find it just hopping around the thread/forum/search randomly.
what are the differences between the sanwa in hrap3 (Sanwa JLF-TP-8Y-SK) and the ones that are selling on Lizard Lick ( JLF-TP-8T and JLF-TP-8YT-SK ) ?
anyone?
does anyone know if HORI is going to make a new batch of HRAP3’s to distribute to retail/online stores? i want a second one but im not going to pay price-gouging sellers double the price of the first one i bought brand new from amazon.
I got my two Amazon HRAP 2 sticks last week and they are really nice. My only experience with Hori before this was the HFS3 so I was a bit nervous. Just waiting on my new buttons from arcadeshop.de and I’ll be ready to go!
Damn I’d love to get a HRAP EX at a reasonable price. They’re going for $200+ on ebay…:bluu:
Hori Rap Mod for Sega Saturn/Dreamcast
Hi guys,
I’m new here but a gamer from a long time back!
Anyhow, I’m getting into the joystick mod scene because I like to work with my hands and problem-solve.
I’ve got an old Ascii bat-handle Saturn stick as well as Hori SS Fighting Stick. I’m looking to mod the Hori SS with better buttons and possibly a better joystick (I’ve heard only the Seimitsu fits the casing – no amount of modding will let you use a Sanwa stick). As for the Ascii, I think I’m going to remove the PCBs and Saturn connector cord for the joystick and try to incorporate the cord and PCB’s into a HRAP casing… Possibly a HRAP 3 or Hori licensed stick (which I know have buttons soldered in… I have a T5 Bundle stick I plan on massively upgrading soon!).
Has anybody ever tried to incorporate a Saturn PCB/licensed Sega product/unlicensed compatible into a HRAP casing and make a dual-compatible stick? (In my case, it’d be tri-compatible… I happen to also have a Saturn-to-Dreamcast converter.) It seems it would be possible as I’ve read mods people have done with 360 and PS1 PCB’s being put into sticks.
I’m already guessing soldering will be involved and checked out hardware at both Home Depot and Radio Shack for that occasion. The RS solder equipment seems much better but the HD but has better deals on Quick Disconnects…
P.S. – I’ll check back in a day or two to see if anybody has answered my query. If you guys want, I’ll see if I can get a picture of the Ascii PCB without destroying the stick entirely.
You might want to read this FAQ here – http://lizardlick.com/pages/sanwa_jlf_faq.shtml
The sticks are basically the same design with minor changes.
The big thing with the -SK is that it DOESN’T include the wire harness – that has to be bought separately and makes the stick $5 more expensive. A wire harness is generally a good thing to buy unless A) you have a Mad Catz SF SE stick that has its own wire harness for quick disconnect/connect or B) you want to do more soldering and feel comfortable reusing the stick wiring inside a Tekken 5 joystick. A lot of people buy terminals that allow them to reuse the T5 soldered wiring and join the Sanwa stick without more soldering.
The Sanwa in the HRAP3 is the same Sanwa -SK that you can buy for mods/stick replacements at LizardLick.
If only the prices weren’t so crazy. Ugh.
Which mounting plate needs to be used to install a LS-40-01 into a HRAP 2?
I don’t get it…
Honestly, everybody needs to make a living and nothing about LizardLick’s prices are out of line with what I’ve seen on other sites – and believe me, I’ve looked!
The one thing I will agree is out of control is the joystick shortage situation and the inability to get ANY of the licensed SF IV stuff for much less than $50 above MSRP. There is definitely crazy price-gouging going on and none of this stuff is worth over $200 new let alone used. Such is the price of a supply and demand system. I don’t honestly think anybody figured SF IV would cause such a run on joysticks. It just goes to show that the stock pads for both the PS3 and XBox 360 were poorly designed where traditional fighting games are concerned. In fact, the last system out of the ones that I own that came with a decent pad for 2-D fighting games was the Sega Saturn.
This is not a cheap hobby, joystick or not. Quality will definitely cost you. Having played with “cheap” sticks and both the HARP 2 SA and MadCatz TE (both of which I own) I can honestly say Sanwa/Seimitsu-equipped sticks are worth it for the extra comfort on your hands and poor fingers. The crappy sticks will wear you out before you learn how to do special moves on them!
I got lucky and paid MSRP on the MadCatz PS3 TE stick because I reserved it at a local GameStop well ahead of the SF IV release date. I was the only guy in the local area that did that! It’s kind of late for people to be bitching about that because the TE stick was never meant to be a mass-market item. MadCatz will probably end up producing several times the original number of sticks they intended to ship as far as the TE goes. For now, we’re all paying for this because nobody expected SF IV to cause the run on hardware that it did!
It definitely is a bit cheaper to build a custom stick than it is to buy one brand-new now. Even some of the older models (HARP’s especially) are going for higher than they originally sold for. Right now, the only HARP 2 worth what it’s being sold for online/e-Bay is the HARP 2 SA. (That’s the HARP 2 with light blue buttons.) That has everything you could ask for in a stick short of a PS2-to-PS3 adaptor and a Home button which you don’t need to play. It’d probably even work on a 360 with the right adaptor.
If you’re going to customize a stick with arcade parts, it’s definitely better to go looking at older HARP models and HARP-lites than spending money on a newer stick with anime-style art. It really doesn’t make sense to spend over $120 on a stick with anime-style art like the Hori Arcana Heart 2 stick or the BlazBlue stick only to wreck the artwork and devalue the stick. Better to customize an older, cheaper used stick IMHO… like the Tekken 5 or older Hori Fightsticks for the PS2, PS3, and XBox 360.
US and British prices on arcade parts are roughly the same with the devaluation of the British pound. The only difference might be shipping if you order from overseas.
Japan will DEFINITELY be more expensive than the US! Even if the price parts are the same, to get something over here in anything under a week will cost you a pretty penny.
Does anybody have a PCB diagram for the HRAP3? I dual modded mine with a Madcatz 360 PCB, and I’d like to have the PS3 home button function as the guide button.
Those images of the T5 are no longer there. Are there some other place I can find them at?
Which Tekken 5 stick images are you looking for? There are plenty of them in the mod guide for the stick starting here —

Exterior shell and interior components with old and replacement parts are in this Mod FAQ…
I’m planning on modding my T5 myself as soon as I have the money and can buy the tools and parts I need. I have about half of what I need now with the stick base, PCB, power cord, and joystick wiring. The Sanwa/Seimitsu parts and soldering materials plus terminal are really all I need to buy… I don’t understand why some people are so reluctant to solder. It doesn’t seem that hard with the right equipment, some practice, and patience. It’s certainly cheaper to reuse as much as you can of the original stick’s internal circuitry rather than paying for all new wiring and PCB components…
My discussion with a guy at Radio Shack definitely convinced that a combo 15W/30W solder pen plus solder braid is the way to go for this mod.
question, i have the hrap2 case, but no parts
if i get the same exact joystick that it would normally include, JLF-TP-8Y-SK, would i need to buy an extra mounting plate for it (doesn’t come with it)
It looks like it doesn’t need one according to the photos here:
