Hooking EVERYTHING up to a modern HDTV - A Guide (Update for the Framemeister coming soon!)

I think that amp cable is the way to go.

Thank you!

Hey smashbro,
The post you left in the shmups thread "Modified CGA to VGA Scaler to accept clean sync RGB SCART " Is lacking details, I notice you always assume people know what setup you have, you have to detail it out. You did not even specify what scaler you were using and that’s a big deal over there especially. I know you posted a link but who the hell is going to go through and real all this garbage.

You’re probably right. I just get so busy with stuff thinking goes out the window sometimes.

From the look of things, its a mess.
Posts on How many threads on how many boards now?

I don’t see how anyone can follow this.

Its one thing to ask different forums the same questions to get more data and resources on your RGB issues.
Its another to create internet post spaghetti

Yes, I didn’t think this would be as hectic as it is and then stuff in life happened, kinda limited me to short spurts of internet on my phone. I’m sorry, I’m trying.

That is fine, at least we identify the problem.
I know Cell Phone blogging is a bitch

Although this would be more manageable on a PC. if you have to post something, a new question or update, please wait till your at a PC.
1 or 2 quality post of meaningful and easy to follow messages are worth more than a hundred haphazard posts that would need a guide to follow.

When you post a question don’t forget to add in all relevant information, and when in doubt put in all the info you have, The Experts know whats relevant from whats not.
When you post the same question on different forums, Copy and Paste are you best friends. Remember to be consistent.

Also the more we have to hunt though all the post on different forums to follow your train of thought the less we can work on your problems.

Alright. I’m gonna go with this. Although… I did copy and paste that last question. I needed more info on it, I see that now.

I know I said no phone updates but… The VGA switch came in at last and it works BEAUTIFULLY. Doesn’t even need power. No problems and nothing sounds or looks any worse.

Ble blazes! That thing works!

"Conclusion: Micomsoft has delivered! While still not perfect in every regard, the Framemeister is huge step forward in terms of usability and compatibility. Gone are the days when scanlines required a VGA connection, gone are the problems with dropouts, shakiness or special requirements for RGB cables. With the Framemeister you don’t need an second video processor for optimal results. The XRGB-mini performs great right of the box. There are a few minor drawbacks (ridiculous 1200p modes, missing 50Hz support, ugly scanlines on 1080p output), but the positive aspects easily outweigh the few (fixable) quirks. All hail the new king "

Death to 50hz, death to PAL

So major update time:

I now have the sync strike properly powered by the scaler after figuring out just what the hell a screw terminal is(Yes, I feel stupid, next point).

I tried a few things out when I got my VGA switch in, first I tried was “the trilogy” (with my Saturn because I can’t seem to find a decent SCART switch and I’m still having problems on my SNES and Genesis 2)and put my Dreamcast in one of the ports there, that worked out ok. Everything was showing great and the VGA switch is flawless. I decided to see if it got better, so I plugged the Sync Strike into the switch and put the entire switch (Dreamcast and SS) through the scaler. At first everything was all screwy and broken but as it turns out Dreamcast doesn’t work when the scaler is set to RGBS it works on RGB HV. I can’t mess with the “Geometry” settings in this mode (But I can still fill out the screen with my TV’s settings), switch back to Saturn and I have to switch the mode back to RGBS on the Scaler. I set the resolution to highest on all of these tests (I’m using bigger is better logic, for lack of a better one).

The other systems tested:
The PS2 running via the scaler gives me those odd dots on all settings, the Super Nintendo’s audio is perfect, the video gets frozen? I don’t know how to explain it, it’s like watching a still followed by a “no signal” followed by that same still or sometimes just that one still. Genesis? Same thing. The picture show. Fun.

I updated the first post with what I learnt now, I really need someone to answer the above to move forward though, that, finding a SCART switch and the PS2/SS audio issue.

Ummm… First off: Happy Holidays

Second: Maybe its a Chrismukkah miracle but there is no longer a “picture show” on my Genesis and Super Nintendo. I can’t even replicate it. It just… Fixed itself. Maybe Kwanza can kick in and make Madcatz SCART switchers magically appear.

Third: There’s only ONE problem that I see with this, I spent a LONG time making sure it perfectly fit every corner of the screen while using the Genesis, I switched over to SNES and it was off center, I’ve tried using both my TV and the scaler’s settings together to try and make it work, is this just something that’s a lot of trial and error or is this impossible?

This is normal, and yes, you’ll likely have to tweak it for each system when you use them. This is particularly noticeable on a system like the Sega Saturn, where the resolution of titles vary pretty wildly sometimes (and in the case of a game like Daytona USA Circuit Edition, the resolution between game and menus are different). Nature of the beast. My best advice with this scaler if you don’t want to spend your life adjusting the image: just hit ‘auto’ and call it a day.

(of course I’m sure someone will soon post about how horribly wrong I am and that I don’t know what I’m talking about because after all: this is the Interwebs, and everyone is an expert)

Thanks for the reply man! Don’t hate me but i REALLY hope you’re wrong on this. I was so anal about the edges of the screen.

Don’t hate me: but I’m REALLY not wrong.

Hate you? Don’t be ridiculous. I just loathe that about the scaler. That and it seems to have trouble keeping up. There’s this one line at the bottom half that kinda… Cuts off if you’re moving a lot. Everything above the bottom 1/3 of the screen is fine but below that sometimes it looks like the bottom is trying to keep up but can’t.

In other news I got the amplified cable for N64 and everything looks… well it looks like it should for better or worse.

Put up a video, all the issues kinda ironed themselves out.

I think I’m done with this. Wish I got some time earlier.

Hey peeps. I’m looking into a SCART -> GBS -> VGA setup for a Saturn and (fat) PS2, with possibly a couple other consoles (SNES and Genesis come to mind) down the line.

I noticed that the main guide calls for use of a SyncStrike, but also noticed a link to this cableearlier in the thread. I suppose I’m just wondering what the particular advantage would be to using a SyncStrike over said cable. I’ve seen mention of “cleaning up” the signal, but am having trouble finding any further details than that.

My apologies if this has been covered. I read the full thread, but didn’t see (or missed) anything in particular comparing the two. Thanks in advance for any wisdom.
