Honest questions to those that complain about Chun-Li

God damnit… hahahahahaha

Nice humour OS.

I’ve been to Japan and the people there are very nice, however it isn’t some magic land where no one ever gets mad and there are all smiles in tournaments. People have emotions there too.

I played in the 3s team tournament at Seasons Beatings last year. I went 0-2. I want to go back and play MORE because despite losing it was fun to just get to play and bullshit with other players.

usa tournament format is just a bad, bad format for 3s. tougeki format is great for character variety, and despite being more random ultimately makes the game a lot better than it is in american-style tournaments.

the reason top usa players tend towards the best characters is because top tier characters have massive advantages in the american format. i imagine japanese low tier players are aware of this too which is why they don’t travel to evo as much as top tier players.

that’s why people have a negative impression of usa 3s and chun especially.

It’s a mix of that and the fact that it can get pretty expensive to fly to the US. Most of these guys do nothing but go to the arcade and play 3S, so unless they all suddenly had fat bonuses at work, or get flown here, I doubt they’d want to come. That and the move to Vegas made things more pricey.

To be honest, I don’t really mind the US tourney format for 3S. I do think that it hinders a player’s potential to get good at 3S though, because they don’t have the guts to try and level up their game and instead switch to top-tier. This is why I liked the old FFA Ranbat rule: no character switching.

i dont hate chun but i dont have much chun experience so she usually dominates me because her strong ground game (lows) kinda locks me up and my dudley up.

Dudley’s gotta jump!

Yeah, Dudley doesn’t have to play that game if he doesn’t want to. He does okay with footsies against her(one of the few characters that actually can), but careful jump-ins can help close the gap for him.

I haven’t read most this thread except for most the 1st page, so excuse me for maybe sounding abit random while I add my own 2cents.

From what I’ve read and skimmed through, most this thread seems to relate to just 3rd Strike. As a Vega main and from a SF4 perspective, I have a VERY hard time against Chun Li. I’m certainly not no pro but I can confidently say that most pros that do main Vega also have a difficult time against Chun Li, personally for me its just a uphill battle constantly if not a losing one on most occasions.

As for my explanation as to why, well that’s quite simple really. Vega’s strongest attribute, and one of the only ones lol is his pokes at range. There fantastic for spacing and fundamental for linking attacks. But this isn’t the case against Chun Li because her normals have ridiculous range, especially her standing heavy punch and standing roundhouse. While having impeccable normals (that’s right I said impeccable) she can also play a great zoning game with her fireballs, her EX Spinning Bird Kick is definitely one of the best wake ups in the game IF you manage to get in close and ground her. And lastly her Ultra set ups are just to easy, her set ups to Ultra 2 especially is just childs play.

I’m not trying to grill Chun Li, but someone in my position having to put up with that it’s just a nightmare. It’s like playing a game of chess, every move needs to be thought about carefully especially if your going in for the attack. But anyways there you go, like I said just wanted to add my 2cents.

I don’t play SF4, but most of what you said could be applied to Chun I guess. One of the biggest reasons why Chun in 3S is so good is because there aren’t many people who can close in on her that well. Her st.HP, b.HP, cr.MK, st.MP, cr.MP are all great keepaway tools. Yes, cr.MKxxSA2 is a pretty easy hitconfirm, and yes it does lead to a free mixup. A lot of characters just have a hard time dealing with her normals though, which gives her opportunities to get that bar faster.

Yun was considered to be the only character that could beat Chun because of being able to close the gap much better than everyone else(at the time), which is why he was considered the best in the game for a while, but Chun play has leveled up tremendously since the mid 2000s and now that matchup is considered dead even.

The game has evolved over the years, though. Pretty much everyone in top to high-mid have something to be able to kill Chun off of one opportunity, while certain mid to low-tier characters aren’t impossible to win with against her anymore. She’s still the best character, it’s just a lot of people will exaggerate about her strength(and Yun’s) based on Evo showings(which most of the players that deserved to place there happened to play Chun).

I find this one of the most exciting and fun parts of the game. I’m an awful player but I have to say if you’re whining about chun-li it’s because you normally don’t play the spacing/footsies game very well in 3s and so she completely dominates you. I don’t play that part of the game well either but I enjoy it so playing against chun-li is actually really fun. There was a time I felt it was hopeless with some characters (Alex) but since then I’ve learned how to bait and fake and give the false impression of intentions. Ultimately the other character is played by a human just like yourself and they think like a human and react like a human.

I think people believe they’re ok at footsies/spacing but actually have no idea what’s going on. They don’t realize that to someone who does know that part of the game well, they’re sending all the signals they should not be sending. Against chun that’s a very quick way to lose 33%+ of your bar.

This isn’t to say she doesn’t have a number of dominating qualities but those things can be undone by THINKING. MOV is so good because his risk vs reward assessment is beastly. It’s like he has mental venn diagrams for every situation possible and in 0.001 seconds is able to choose the best or at least top 3 best options available. Watch him play other characters. Not much changes.

Thankfully there is only one MOV.

To be quite honest, I really agree with you. That is one of the most exciting parts of the game, any player worth there salt enjoys the idea of being challenged and pushed. That’s personally why I main Vega, because its a challenge. It’s just whenever I play a Chun Li, I honestly go in to that match up expecting to lose. It sounds daft I know, but it’s the truth.

For me taking on a Chun Li is expecting to win a stand off with a guy using a revolver, while your using a BB gun lol. Meaning you might sting the Chun Li player but she’ll blow your brains out lol. Perhaps having a “Guru like” footsies game is the trick to beating Chun Li consistently. And your right alot of people may think they have a great footsies game when really they just know the basics, and I may fit in to that category to lol. Either way I think its say to agree on that Chun Li is a very versatile character that has many strong attributes.

it’s all about repetition when it comes to footsies. Even the basics work well if you can read your opponent. That stands against even the best players. I don’t think my footsies are pro at all, but I do well against even the best of American players. Nuki owns me, though.

I don’t see what the confusion is here. Chun li is a annoying character, and she has gotten this reputation because people have been playing this game for ten years and they know she’s a PITA. You’re trying to convince people she’s not annoying to play against, when in fact she clearly is… So much of her design is infuriating, and those design choices are what put her at the top of the food chain. Such as being able to mixup off a landed super, her pokes, her range over heads, her kara throw, her hit box, the list goes on. If you want to main her, then sure main her, and yeah good Chun players deserve credit. But at the same time I don’t understand the point in picking a character which is obviously top tier, 90% probable she’s the best character in the game, and then creating a thread complaining about people complaining and asking them to change their views. This is a ten year old game, people know what’s going on with this game by now.

she has great tools for a player to utilize for achieving victory. so its understandable why she’s top tier. why make a thread about complaining tho? all it does is creating immense amounts of stupidity, which, eventually, goes way out of hand, and has no sense of productivity whatsoever. i think if you renamed your title to be as, “having a difficult time with chun? i’ll answer some questions that can help out your matchups” would be a lot better so it’s aimed more at the productivity sense of helping each other out, rather than just whine about a character and do nothing.

i mean no hate to the OP. after skimming through some posts here, i just got really annoyed by some posts because they’re absolutely fucking retarded.

I don’t personally understand how people can hate her so much. For me atleast, the Ken vs Chun matchup is one of the most fun to play in the entire game.

I totally agree Tebbo. People like MOV are great with their footsies game because they know (not just understand) what to expect at every range and in every situation. It’s a general lack of knowledge that screws people as aku alluded to.

it has nothing to do with me playing chun or not, i would make this thread even if my main was Q.

i also made this a long ass time ago and i dont care anymore. just bored and drunk.

Chun is annoying in every game she’s in, not just 3s.

/thread

I’m bored and drunk sometimes too. I understand.
