no worries man, but the more you know of those holes the easier it is for you to recognize when people are giving you openings, cause once you know about the hole you can plant your headbutt or flashkick or any other charge move reversal in there, and when you get reversaled by a charge move out of a string that’s really demoralizing because you know 100% they read your offense and found the hole that YOU put there.
This is one of the reasons why i hate SF4, too much turtling. I don’t blame them, when the game makes it so easy to counter someone all day all you have to do is wait for your opponent to attack and counter. And considering 99% of the people you face seem to only know how to use shotos, they sit on their high priority moves, zone you with fireball, and pretty much force you to attack, assuming your using a non fireball high priority-high damage dealing-can link ultra in 100 ways character. Turtling is even also present in high level play
This is why I will only play fighters that punish both attackers and defenders/turtles, just like blazblue.
Negative penalty for running away too much and you take more damage.
Guard/barrier crush so you can’t camp in the corner and block forever.
Air dashes, super jump, super air dash, and smaller stages allowing you to reach your opponent in the blink of an eye.
If SF4 included atleast two of the following, then maybe people won’t have to play cat and mouse all day. To think that shotos(Ryu especially) ran away from my Gen/Guile/El Fuerte is shameful. If they even had slight knowledge of the matchup they would know how much of a disadvantage I’m at from the beginning for using such low characters, and instead of them to play accordingly to win, they’d turtle like little b$#%@s, and in the end I’d still get the win. Unfortunately winning wasn’t enough. Fun comes first, and winning second.
Wait the first round play the next few rushdown. I dont like to get caught by shoryukens in the first round. It kills momentum and you can figure out when they are likely to try to reversal.
This is why I enjoy playing Rufus. When I’m on a roll, it’s to my advantage to be all up in people’s faces for as long as I can, hopefully until I win the match.
However, if I have a life lead and my opponent is running away, then I’m not chasing them. I’ll happily sit and focus or snakestrike over fireballs if they’re just going to sit there tossing them. Same goes for a turtly Blanka. It’s not to my advantage to try to get in on a Blanka or a shoto with Ultra, especially online. I once watched a Blanka jumpback constantly for about thirty seconds… And then, when he realized that there were only about three seconds left on the clock, realized they had to advance. At which point all I had to do was keep retreating.
The one character I can’t do this with is Sagat, as I lack the ability to consistently dodge Tiger Shots. I’ll keep rushing down Guiles, too, as I’m better off attacking them than defending against them.
That said, I have wound up going after fireball-tossers/turtles in certain matches, just because I got bored. Again, fun is the key, and it’s good practice for getting in on them anyway!
The most effective strategy is to get on a player’s nerves. this can include turtling, or even an “offensive turtle” style: Playing defensively but advancing, which is a way of baiting out moves to punish because your opponent might think since you’re moving, you’re going to attack. some people are really spastic about being approached.
The tortoise beat the hare, but the tortoise still had to walk. I guess that’s the biggest flaw in that balrog’s gameplay, is he charged in too much. believe in baby steps and you’ll make it to the moon.
I say learn your normals, learn the combos, and you won’t NEED to sit back to win.
Times I get mad is when srk characters use srk every single time they wake up. I block the first 2 srk wake ups and I’m thinking ok he’s not dumb enough to do a 3rd time but then I eat it. And then I’m thinking ok he got me but he must know that I’ll be expecting another wakeup since he already got 1 off on me so he’ll hold off on it, guess what he SRKS again.
I somehow lose thinking that this kid can’t be that dumb to be doing srk wakeups every single time. Oh man those games…
Im so disappointed that it took a whole page before someone said this.
What happened SRK, you used to be cool.
Seriously though, turtling is a viable strategy. I never turtle annd i can honestly say ive lost matches because of that. I play really aggressive and because of that i probably make lots of mistakes.
Is there a name for players who refuse to engage and even lose because of it?
I played a Sagat a few days ago(I’m Ryu). Like many Sagat’s, all he wants to do is throw tigers and anti-air me if I jump at him. If I manage to close the distance and he scores a sweep or something, he backs the fuck out all the way to the other end of the screen if he can.
Anyways it’s the 3rd round and I manage to put a good beating on him to bring him down to 10% life while I’m at 40 or so. I do a late cross up and he jumps away. I said “fuck that, I’m done chasing”. With 50 seconds left, I just trade and dodge fireballs and finally in the final 8 or so seconds he starts coming towards me but stops right in front of me. I just sit there holding back until the timer ran out. My only regret is not doing a Ultra in the final 3-4 seconds, that would have been a great way to end the game.
Anyways, I’ve noticed this being the most common in Akuma players. But what’s up with these guys. They’d rather lose with life remaining then get finished trying to win like it’s a accomplishment.
This is definitely not entertaining from a spectator point of view. Can you imagine Daigo and Dustin sits it out in the corner with thousands of people watching ? That would certainly put an end to some SF players. :crybaby:
i totally agree about your statement here. I think most people are SO into “i gotta win no matter what” state that they’ll turtle and spam any move they can to keep the other opponent away til’ the timer runs out. Some will say strategic and I’ll call it “_____ game” let’s just say it’s not a favorable word where I left it blank.
Where is the fun in turtling??? When someone attacks i love it cuz then I’ll try to play the best I can and won’t spam on my moves. Capcom needs to do something about this and hopefully the new release will have that covered.
A simple yet effective way of taking out fireball spamming turtlers would to not give any meter UNLESS the fireball is blocked/focused. This could also be applied to special moves in general. So that if you’re turtling there could be no meter building.
p___y players!! So boring to fight them now. It’s always this damn cat and mouse game.
But yeah, you SHOULD have done the ultra just to piss him off. Sagat players aren’t too bad for me . . . there are some good ones and some really bad . . . more bad than good most of the time. I hate Seth/Sim players the most. I wish my character has a fireball option when I fight them . . . makes it more fun.
LOL I can tell who plays online and who plays in the live or in arcades with the posts.
When you bring that weak juice to the arcade you’re going to be breaking out dollar bills to feed the machine. You really don’t see this in the shell turtle strategy when you get to experience the arcade. You just get a different pace, old school heads will understand.
But as far as turtling online? Did any of you guys ever think why the other player is turtling? You do understand when you play online you have the benefit of anonymity so you can practice strategies and tactics without fear of someone standing next to you criticizing you.
well Rick, i think that the other player just wants the win, really. I’ve fought a Rog on PC who had twice the GPs than I had (4000+) and the first round he attacked and got a few good hits on me. Then the turtling began. I chased him down but couldn’t catch up with the life I had left so I lost the first round. The second, I kinda figured out his style so i whooped on him pretty badly. Third round came and it was very close. He had a good life gain ahead and started to turtle again! He did that too in the second round but failed. This time I had a super meter and started to close in. At the distance i wanted closed in . . . i pulled out a move to just close in right in front of his face and BOOM pulled out my super . . . after the super was about to finish him off . . . . “connection with other player has been lost”. WTF??? Lame ass dude rage quitted on me??? hahahahaha. So he sends me a message talking smack and said I had a nasty lag. . . I had absolutely no lag on my side . . . great connection.
All I wanted to point out there is that he just wanted to win, period. No matter how he wins he doesn’t care. So yeah, a lot of people are like that . . . specially Akumas, blankas, hondas, and even sagats. Most of the people I feel bored playing with?? are people with really high GamePoints. Cuz they just turtle and spam on two moves. Wow, shows me no skills. Thought they’d be better fighters/opponents?? Nah . . . I thought I was a bad player but damn . . .
and checked out the ragequitters lately??? Why the G1 players??? That’s just sad. Take a loss, so what? You gained experience on how the other player played his character and perhaps build your character to be better?
I play as Gief so majority of my matches are turtling ones. So I just have fun now and see how good I am at closing in and dodging a barrage of fireballs thrown at me in one match (100?). I still fail and lose most of those matches but I never Rage Quit. And I dunno . . . seems a lof of people are just “too” serious about winning this and wanna be on top. . . .
so what’s the point of being on top? You ain’t winning anything, or bringing with you when you die . . . have fun and fight! Win or lose . . . ultimately it’s supposed to be fun and enjoyable. I’m not hating on any of you here . . . just giving you my 2 cents . . .
If you’re trying to say people don’t turtle at arcades or high level of play you’re retarded. Those stupid Honda turtlers a few posts up? Both are in the quarter finals of a japanese tournament, so yeah.
