HNL 808 GGXX: Accent Core

D-Pad: I’m down for the 19th as well. So far, its 3 votes for the 19th? lol. We should all get food afterwards or something.

So, I take it he didn’t run into any of you at all then?. At least there was a location confirmation though, its something. Kinda makes me wonder who he ended up playing after all if even such a thing occurred. Cause when he said that he played some GGXX players up on Oahu, for a moment I thought “did he happen to run into the guys I played at ‘The Zone’ or was it like a random group of players?”. I was hoping he played some of you guys and you totally ‘owned’ his sorry ass after which he comes up with this seeming BS story in which he did ‘well’ and tells me about it. That or if he did happen to play you guys, I would end up hearing about if I knew of some random person from Big Island who sucked really bad at GGXX and played really scrubby. I was hoping you could validate that part lol, and know what I had to put up with at one time.

There is some back-story to all this though and I guess I will have to share it here.
It pretty much highlights why ‘I’ had to travel for comp at GGXX.

My friend is actually from Oahu but lives in Hilo now and he tells me that he and some of his friends used to play GGXX a good amount. This was when X2 was out. IIRC he told me one time that he ran up a 30+ win streak with MA or something against some peeps back in the day on an X2 cabinet. Fast forward to Fall 06. One of my Hilo friends tells me that they -found- me some GGXX comp, mind you most everyone played Tekken there and I was like the only guy who played any GGXX seriously on the island as far as I was concerned lol. We end up talking a bit and I decided to drive down to Hilo to challenge him so I could assess his ability, using #Reload cause that was what I had, SLASH was current though but no one really had access to it. So we play and I run DI, he runs KY cause during the earlier conversation I tried to assess if he had a main and was knowledgeable about the game. I beat him and summarized his then ability: scrubby spammed stuff with heavy OD usage, no FRC/RC usage, AND even attempted IKs. This was mostly with KY, TE, and MA. The whole time it was like that, me with my main and some randoms versus him mostly randoming the whole time. Results were one sided, all me. But some good came out of it, we became friends and at least I had one person to play GGXX with.

The rest of 06 into early 07 though was -interesting-. I make an attempt to help better his ability, pick a main, and such. We played once a week for a couple of months. You hope to see some progress right? I questioned his ability and he assures me that he -knows- how to play. I told him “practice your FRCs and combos and stop heavy ODing”, basically “if I can do it, you can do it”. Is there progress? Some but not much. Its bad when you can do stuff with a person’s main char who you don’t even use as your main or often at all and they can’t even do some of the basic stuff. His main was TE at the time. I wasn’t having any of it and called him out on this: his BS ability that wasn’t improving. It was quite epic cause I had done this amongst a large group of people that were gaming (it was a club event), yelling and just putting him down about it. End result: he disappointed me and I made him -question- his GGXX playing ability. That and no one in Hilo would play GGXX - with me at least lol.

Of course this may raise the question of “why isn’t there a GGXX scene here on the Big Island?” That’s another story for another time lol but it can be summed up with me saying “people have to want to play GGXX” as the main reason. But there was an effort to try and see if there were other players via a MySpace forum group. That venture failed for the most part but it did have one good positive, I got to know about D-Pad through it and his situation, which would have some benefits later in the future. Me and my friend reconciled for the most part and played some sporadic GGXX in early 07 but that failed cause he didn’t step his game up even though he said he would. Somehow there was talk amidst our group of friends about going to EVO 07 and I figured “what the hell, I’ll go” knowing full well it was going to be teams and I had no team at the time. Fast forward to around August and I’m off to EVO teamless and w/o comp experience but manage to play in official teams tournament and singles tournament. Jump to September and D-Pad asks me about my experience and points me to SRK and you guys on the forum. I come down in October and play, great times as well as finding other GGXX players in the 808. And now, jump to January 08 and a possible tournament on the horizon with those GGXX players.

That about covers it. And now you know about how things came to be and my involvement concerning said matters lol. The main thing is that there -are- players in the 808 that play GGXX and that I can be a part of that. A chance to play others despite playing alone is better than nothing. That is worth traveling for regardless.

I hope I didn’t bore anyone with this cause this post seems quite blog-like. If anything I entertained you all with a story that makes you say ‘WTF?’

KOG: He not worth bringing up for the tournament or to just session with. For starters he -rarely- plays despite saying that he’s so into the game but his ability says otherwise. That and he’d be with me and that’d be no fun to be lumped in with him. Besides, the only Big Island player worth playing is ‘me’ cause I stepped up to it and made the effort to come up and play you guys at GGXX. AFAIK, there are -no- other GGXX players on the Big Island, lol.

7 more days…

Considering the tourney is next week Saturday, I’m guessing an impromptu Friday night session would be out of the question then? Then again, the proposed free play period during tourney signups would be ample warmup time and casuals would follow afterwards anyway lol.

D-Pad: Are the start times -set- or negotiable? Dinner reservations w/ relatives -might- delay me somewhat but I’m still gonna show up to play regardless.

Anyway though, back to practice.

any time is fine with me. just suggest a time and hopefully the others will give their opinions

is everyone still going to make the tournament at zones this saturday (jan 19th)?

Cool.
I was thinking that signups and free-play would be pretty much whenever you set up shop till whenever the tourney started. Then people would signup, play some warmup matches, followed by the start of the tourney shortly thereafter.

Suggested Schedule (up for discussion)

Tourney Start: 8pm
Signups/free-play warmups: 6~6:30pm - 7:45pm
Casuals: Whenever tourney is over lol.

Seems I will have a short dinner time on Saturday night lol.

I’m down for whenever you guys want to start the tourney. I pretty much guarantee that I will be showing up for the tourney. I’m pretty sure I will also be bringing Evil also on that day.

For the folks that live more towards townside, can most of you guys make it this Saturday night? (Levi IIDX, Kyle, Selovare, Cherise, Joo, D.Hibiki, Pretzels, Shin, etc.)

Ill come if i can get my iidx controller back.

WTF pretzels, you play on XBL? What game?

Place: The Zones

Fee: $10 ($3 Zones fee, the other $7 goes into jackpot)

3rd place: 10%

Other: You may use more than one character throughout the tournament. Also, bring any controllers you wish to play on. There will be freeplay held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, so feel free to come early if you’d like to practice. If you have any concerns or questions, please post and I’ll answer them as soon as I can.

January 17th is a thursday.

Heh heh the 17th is today. I guess D-Pad made a careless typo.

Its almost time…

I’ll see you guys Saturday night. I’m gonna try to arrive there around 7pm or earlier if possible lol.

yes yes, saturday the 19th, not the 17th. thanks for catching my typo, obviously i was looking at today’s date when i typed that out, haha. see you all saturday, hopefully.

Everybody ready? Fucking game on. . . .:wgrin:

Tournament Results:

1st: D-Pad
2nd: KOG
3rd: Dagger_G

thanks to everybody for coming down and participating in the tournament! especially the guys who live in town, i know the drive is kind of far. The next one will probably be next month sometime. I’ll hold practice sessions at the zone every week until then. if anyone has comments on how the next tournament should be run (entry fee, tournament format, etc), please post your opinions. special thanks to kuro for flying from the big island to play in the tourney.

**First I would like to thank D-Pad for letting me and my sister play free-play practice sessions, that was really nice of you.

We’ve been playing GGXX:AC off and on for a month now (had to practice marvel for HBB’s that’s why) and only started playing somewhat serious for a week now - on the same note, GG’s to everybody we played, you guys are real good! I’d also like to congratulate D-Pad, KOG and Dagger_G!

I’ll give my feedback:
I think you should make practice sessions on opposite days as MvC2, SFIII:3s and CvS2 tournaments or fridays; because if I’m not mistaken, about half of the GGXX:AC guys are either marvel, CvS2 or 3s players, so I think you should make tournaments and practice sessions on the day’s those games have the least espial to players, and you might get more of an engagement of players for that game…

Just my opinion though, I hope I didn’t sound rude or anything.

Thanks for creating a GGXX:AC scene here for those who never played it or want to get into the game.**

First off, thanks D-Pad for hosting the tourney and congrats for winning the whole damn thing you cheap bastard! Potty is just ridiculous. I’ll get you next time! Things went really smooth being it was your first time hosting a tourney. Can’t wait for the next one.

Kuro: Thanks for coming all the way from the Big Island again to participate. You got to feel the pain that is Evil for the first time! If I recall correctly, I believe he eliminated you from the tourney right? Told you he was a beast. Hopefully you can make it to the next tourney whenever that time comes. Good seeing you again.

Thanks for the town the guys for making it down. Evil (you got dinner next time fucker), Wang, Kyle, Selovare and the rest of the crew. Awesome job to Kyle for doing very well in the tourney! To Selovare, I got a quick question. What was the reasoning for switching to Ky during our matchup? I was expecting to go against your Slayer which did very well and handed Evil his first loss early in the tourney. Maybe Ky vs Sol is a more balanced matchup than Slayer? Anyways, good game to you sir. It was fun playing you guys, it’s been a while since the last session you guys could come down. Hope to play guys in future sessions and tourneys.

Beau: YOU NEED TO PRACTICE. . . . .

concerning practice sessions, what day is the most convenient time to play? everyone used to come down thursdays, is that still the case? i know fridays is hbb cvs2/marvel/sf3 night. i can make practice sessions pretty much any day of the week, so…

The date for the next tournament will be Saturday, February 23, about a month from now. If you have a problem with the date, please make suggestions for when it should be. Tournament details are always flexible. More to follow later.

Yes, I thank D-Pad for making the sessions and tournament happen…

Regarding the entry fee: In my honest opinion, you should make it lower than $10.00, because some people who are not as dedicated as others are, or new players may not feel entering is “worth” $10.00, and perhaps a lower entry fee may attract more new players. However, I understand that you must pay a fee in order to play at zones, so I suggest making the entry fee $6.00-$8.00. Only my opinion, though.

As for the day of sessions / tournaments, thursday seems like a good day, but I believe that some / most people work on weekdays-- I could be wrong. Saturdays or possibly sundays do seem to be all right, because fridays can always be dedicated to 3S, CvS2, Marvel, etc, and besides, those other games will always be there-- we can play them any time and have been playing them consistently pretty much every week, so it may be nice to do something different once in a while… Not trying to be blunt or anything, merely making
suggestions…

Oh, and great job, winners! Dagger_G: You rapidly improve at every game that you play and you keep winning money-- very admirable, keep up the good work^_^

Peace!

Now for the shoutouts,

D-Pad: Congrats on winning the tournament you held, lol. It was a surprise to see you use PO instead of JA but you prevailed regardless. Keep on hosting the sessions and tourneys and I’ll keep on coming down to play at them. I guess the format of free-play/signups, tournament, casuals worked out nicely in the end. And, thanks for the rides back to wherever I was staying at, makes for good conversations during downtime. Good luck with the RK venture, you can do it. GG’s to you sir.

KOG: Great playing you again. Congrats with the 2nd place finish. Evil was everything you made him out to be and then some. Figures I’d run up against you in the bracket/group lol. Casual play was quite -interesting- to say the least, particularly when Evil was commenting on you during our matchup. Good matches to be had there. I’ll keep repping control pad cause that’s how I roll.

Evil: Great playing you finally after KOG metioned you on here. Your JO is sick! Great matches with you. The rapport you have with KOG is hilarious, especially when either one of you was playing me in casuals the other would have something to say. I saw you running TE as well, is he your second? Anyway though, hope to play you more in the future.

Dagger_G: Congrats with the 3rd place finish with DI. Apparently you were giving everyone problems in the tournament lol. Nice to know that DI can cause all sorts of problems for some people. Keep it up! Hopefully I get to play you next time as well.

Wang: Great playing with you again. Yeah, Kerry is M.I.A. from fighting games it seems lol. I think he’s holding out for T6, that and he’s been quite busy as of late. I’ll try to work that angle to have him come down to hang out or something.

Beau: GG’s to you. You seemed quite reluctant to play but what matters is that you played. Now all you need is a character to roll with.
My suggestions: KY, CH, or AN. Get practicing, lol.

The 2 sisters: GG’s to you two as well. I was the -pad- DI player you both played for some time during free-play. Definitely check out the sessions when D-Pad hosts them, best comp in the 808 I say and I fly down from Big Island just to play with them lol.

Selovare: Your SL was tight. Why the switch to KY though? Was it the matchup preference? I hope to play against you sometime in the future.

I think that is everything. The tournament was successful; scheduling plan worked and there was a good turnout. If anything, we -could- have a team tourney as well lol. That can be discussed later when the next tourney comes up.

Anyway though, keep on playing!
Till next time…
