Thanks for the help, Kiki. That’s what my Dad wanted to do. I thought that would work, I just got confused by seeing pictures of buttons wired to a joystick PCB.
Holy shit, it’s beautiful! O_O
Who is the character in the image?
Are those crown buttons? I was thinking those might be the perfect sized buttons for this kind of fight board. The 24mm buttons I think are just a mm or 2 too small. Also the Crowns are flat tops which I love.

@therobin:
Yeah, Crown 203A buttons.
I accidentally over-routed the insides though, so they don’t “snap” in anymore and I have to use tape to stop them from falling out.
Gonna make one of these!
Never built or even owned an arcade stick so a button only controller seems like a good place to start, especially since a lot of my gaming has been music games. I’ve ordered buttons and a cthulu, and have access to a pretty good tool collection. Anything I might be missing?
I’m still debating the layout though. Since I’m not attached to any particular style I’m considering doing something unconventional, perhaps different button heights for different fingers, or slanting the controller like a triangle or dome, which seems more comfortable. A joystick seems like core restricting element in controller design, and removing it might open a lot of room for interesting layouts and shapes. I’ll put the buttons in cardboard or something first to try out several layouts, but any thoughts on that?
there was some proof of concept to say the least at wednesday night fights
Shoutouts to Dustin for doing so great in the WNF MvC3 Ranbats. Hit Box represent.
Got on the list for one of the new sticks through the email.
I cant wait to hear about and see the new ones. I hope there are options for submitting custom artwork and also options for different colored buttons (including clear). Maybe with an upcharge?
Thank you.
Just checking in to see if you guys have pics of the new cases yet. The anticipation is killing me, I really want to get my hands on one of these things.
That’s what I did, just grab some shoeboxes, and start drumming your fingers on it.
Mark the points where your fingers fall naturally, then cut holes in the box if you think you’ve found a good layout.
It’s why I’m using such a high slant on my action buttons.
Ditto on the request for update. From a previous post, supposedly the new cases were going to come at the end of the month. We’re 2 days from the next month, so hopefully they’re ready for casing and what not.
I’m using a hitbox these days, (I switched about a month ago).
Thought I’d share some notes/feedback.
- The hardest motion for me is half circles. I can get them now, but I had to really practice to get them down. quarters and dragon punches were great.
- If you’re going to try out a hitbox, the best way is with a new game. I got my hitbox working a day before my copy of arcana arrived, so I learned arcana heart 3 on hitbox.
It will seem a lot easier and a lot less frustrating if you’re not fighting your old muscle memory getting the “I used to know how to do this” feeling. - Hitbox’s are very portable. The case I got was from qcfgaming, and my hitbox is smaller than my laptop, it can easily fit in a laptop bag, bookbag, or any other case. It’s much easier than the modded hrap3 I was using before.
- as for the crossing the streams thing: (I use a ps360) in blazblue or arcana, left is dominant over right and up is dominant over down. (if you turn on input display, the game only sees one input). In marvel, the game see’s both inputs, but doesn’t react to either (if you hit left and right, input display shows both inputs simultaneously, but your characters stands there, not moving or blocking).
Hello Dustin,
I’m not sure how many of your customers do, or will do this so i thought you might want some kind of update or review after the product has been owned for awhile. Im pleased to say everything is still working smooth. There are no major or minor problems i’ve had. Sliding does occur occasionally because of the light weight but i easily remedied that by adding a type of rubber along the edges. After the first week or so i wanted to add some kind of art to it, but as more and more people noticed me playing with it the more i appreciated how it originally looks. It has that hard work feel to it as others commented on. People have been baffled on how i can play on it, its great fun all around. There is my update, hope you continue to make more
Once again thanx for your hitbox and your business. (p.s. i’ve actually switched to using the hitbox as my main competitive “stick” of choice. i cant play on madcatz anymore lol)
Would you be able/willing to offer empty cases?
Pfft, empty cases. Use a shoebox.

I actually am planning on recasing it, but got my buttons and Cthulu over the weekend, didn’t have access to real tools, and wanted to get something running. Only used scissors, a knife, wire, and electrical+masking tape (and a shoebox). Button layout (specifically the directions) needs to be improved, but it works fantastically. The Happ clicky switches for directions and sanwa for attacks actually works really nicely. One thing I’m debating is going for an unconventional attack button layout. The bottom right buttons (R1&R2) are a bit awkward to hit, even though that’s the conventional layout. I’m considering centering those two above the row of 3 black attacks…or something
Just to be an asshole, I feel I need to point something out.
In “The Basics” video and in the OP of this thread, there are references to a “323” DP. But what’s shown in the videos isn’t 323. It’s 636.
I have a question to the makers of this: will you ever produce a slim 17,3" 16:9 version of the hitbox? It would be very nice to be able to bring it around in a normal laptop bag.
Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the feedback and comments. I’m really glad you made the switch, Nageki! I can’t wait to get more of these in circulation so we can form team Hit Box at Revalations and Evo, lol.
Our first shipment of cases arrived Friday. There is a flaw on the faces that needs to be fixed. Two of the buttons are off by less than a centimeter… just enough to stop everything cold, but we returned them and the tops are being fixed as we speak. Sorry, guys. It’s killing me too.
This is a sneak peak, though. There’s no art underneath the plexi on this one, but it’s still is looking pretty shiny. These boxes are 12" x 6" x 3" so it should fit in thicker laptop cases. As soon as we get things 100% smooth, I’m working on a simple case for these. There’s a weird urge to shine these after every finger smudge on the plexi, so it’ll be nice to have something like that.

We won’t provide empty cases immediately since we have so many customers patiently waiting and we’re putting every one to use, but we’ve got some unique plans to get more Hit Boxes out there in the near future, so stay tuned for that.
Hope you guys like the new look!
