Hi-Def Sprite thread (first post updated! 1/9)

Can you imagine how long it would take? They are taking long enough with what they are producing

what do you mean? all they would have to do is continue using their method but draw them correctly. they don’t have to use the same pixel technique that jashugan is using here.

the reason they took so long is that originally udon was only doing the key frames and giving the in-between work to a 3rd party studio. when the art was leaked and fan outrage over the quality of the sprites emerged, they went back to square one and had udon redo ALL the frames. on top of that, their least popular artist was the one that was designing the new sprites in the beginning of the project and seemed to have little grasp on basic anatomy. i’ll give him props for his colors, but the team didn’t even consider how much work all the layers of shadows would add to the animation.

it was definitely a learning experience for them, no doubt. but if it weren’t for the fans bitching about the quality and doing proper edits themselves on what was wrong with the sprites, the game would’ve been released a long time ago, with shit graphics and shit netcode.

actually, if it wasn’t for all the bad sprites that had been leaked, this HD thread would never have come to fruition. i’m sure sooner or later one would pop up, especially after the games release.

don’t take this the wrong way Providenceangle, none of this anger is directed at you. you just gave me a good excuse to bitch/rant/whine about how SSF2THD has ended up today. i think it was certainly worth the wait

Don’t worry about being perfect. It’s only about contributing for the most part. Hey even your addition can give people inspiration good or bad. Oh and just because you think it sucks doesn’t always make it so… I think most of my work is crap lol.
Not to mention not everything is perfect from the start… lmao

@Poot: I know. It’s cool that you have passion for it. I didn’t think much of the game because I’m not a hardcore SF2 gamer… I wanted to play it but lately it’s really not that big for me… I would have prefered a 3rd Strike verson as it’s still being played in a big way… Only the hardcore fans play SF2T that much.

I’m not that good… Just work fast. When you work with pixels for 7 years you tend to be pretty quick with them lol.

Believe me, i rant about this (and SFIV) design stuff) aaaaall the time. It’s the whole reason I started to get back into SF art.

I try not to be too sour about things, but even the new sprites are pretty awful IMO. They still pay no attention to anatomy, and the proportions are as wonky as the original sprites. What bugs me the most about the art is that alot of the Udon stuff has been reinterpreted so many times that it becomes canon, it’s not just fanart, it’s fanart of fanart. For instance, why the HELL is Akuma so large? Especially in Super Turbo, alot of the original full-body concept art have him slightly bigger than Ryu and Ken. That being said, it’s cool they want to push the differences, but there’s this idea that Akuma is this HUGE meaty character, and from what i’ve seen it’s just not true. In general that comes from ppl drawing him bigger, and bigger and bigger each time.

Another example are the character portraits and in game faces. There are some newer shots of Akuma in a blocking pose and he has this ridiculous grimace/smile on his face.
There’s no thought about the true spirit of the character, no study of the original feel.

The remake feels like a fan-made game, which it is. It would never have even happened if fans(Udon) didn’t take it upon themselves to do it, so in that aspect, i have alot of respect for it, but at the same time i feel like it’s a lost opportunity because it just doesn’t really feel like SF.

Alright, rant over. Again, if they hadn’t made the game, i’d have no excuse to have fun making these sprites. Besides, they’re not screwing with Alpha or 3S, so i can’t complain too much. :stuck_out_tongue:

Does anyone have any idea how Udon is doing these new sprites? From the screens i’ve seen and played, they have all kinds antialiasing in the linework. As much as i like messing with pixelart, i’d love to use the exact restrictions that Udon is limited by.

I second the nomination for Guile’s Sonic Boom. Frame #'s 4 and 5 look the coolest in that animation, IMO.

I dunno. But Akuma is one of the tallest crouching characters in SF3:3S. He has a tall enough crouching hitbox to be hit by the same things as Dudley, Urien, Hugo, Q. And he is “wide” enough while being juggled for character specific juggles that only apply to the big characters. So, I guess Capcom thinks he’s technically “big” too, even if his body-type doesn’t appear significantly different from Ryu or Ken, his hittable boxes (hit areas) are definitely significantly different (larger).

srk should start a studio for re-editing sprites in HD. make it happen mr. wizard! lol

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying no one should mess around with alpha and 3S, I’m saying Udon shouldn’t lol. Your up-rezed sprites are sweet, Prov.

I don’t mean to bash Udon as a whole either, i’m just…dissappointed a bit, and if they gave the same stylistic treatment to Alpha or 3S, I’d be pretty pissed.

Then again, the sprites in Alpha and 3S are leagues better in general to start with, who knows what they’d end up with.

if they put chamba in charge of redesigning the sprites then that would be awesome
