Hi-Def Sprite thread (first post updated! 1/9)

^ Oh, that Strider and Felicia are hot son!

And you got Hayato too? Fantastic work.

Providenceangle, what method are you using when creating your sprites? it seems fast enough to actually use if capcom wanted to have higher def classics like SFHD

There area few that I really like, specificly that Hayato FTW

Ok… I use Paint Shop Pro 7. I take sprites already made(Every game has the sprites now even MVC2) blow them up 200%(Pixel resize) then I manual re-edit the sprite… I try my best to keep original detail where possible, but there are cases in which I change the sprite to either look better or be “physically”(anatomically) correct. 3rd strike is fine because the artist(s) understood the human body and was(were) given a faily large pallet to work with… Everything during and after Alpha(seems like SF3 and CVS(2) were the only(poorly done in CVSs case) sprites capcom has produced) sprites Capcom tired to make new rather then rehash, rehash, rehash. They didn’t make any new sprites ever again…

I think Neogeo is going the right way with KOF12. That game looks awesome and it’s a full release. Of course they have been using the same sprites for 10 years or more lol.

@Muffin: Sweet sig, haven’t seen stuff like that since I used to hang out with my friend when I was 17, he’s the one who got me into Photo Shop and such. Soon to be 24 now and I’m doing sprite edits… Pretty sad lol.

:woot: Thanks man, t’was worth the wait.

I hate Jill… Her sprites are crap… At least I gave her a nice Desert eagle:

You are on fire Providence, you’ve managed to keep faithfull to the capcom style, yet, the amount of detail you put into them makes them awesome.

Anyway I got some sprites coming this way soon.

I used to do it this way too, but I could never manage to keep the single pixel width of some of the lines like you do while working all zoomed in. You do a great job of making the lines look like the sprite was made originally at that resolution from the original art. Also, having ‘tried’ to do the HD’ification I know you need to have an artists eye to figure out/reconstruct what a bunch of strange colored pixels were supposed to represent. So, what I’m saying is, great work!

I don’t stay zoomed in… Part of it is being an artist, anatomy and understanding are parts of this.(When it comes to the human body every single person is an expert on anatomy, we can tell right away if something isn’t correctly proportioned) Getting back to the zoomed in part, I work zoomed in but I can’t stay that way, I have to zoom out to where I can see the whole sprite so I can tell if it looks right.

For all those who want to know exactly what I do:

First of all the program is Paint Shop Pro 7 (not a hard program to find ) it comes packed with Animation shop 3 (a good program for making gifs, sure it’s not on the level of adobe products but for a package of 23mbs what can you do?)

The process of editing the sprites isn’t that hard, it’s like tracing kinda… The detail is there but it’s all blocky and sometimes incorrect.

Step one:(optional)

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Sonsonanimationshop3.jpg

This isn’t always a step but in Son Son’s case I have a gif of her not her full sprites(don’t care much for her…) I want a single frame so I cut and paste from animation shop to paint shop.(they have features to allow direct transfer to edit animations with photo edit tools using Shift +X but in thise case I’m using cut and paste)

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Image23.png

Here it is pasted into PSP(paint shop pro) where I can now start editing it.

Step2:

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Sonson.jpg

As you can see I’ve flood filled the image with that “pink” color we are use to seeing when dealing with PNG files (most sprite rips are png). This serves two functions. 1.) It creates something in the backround that isn’t a color of the sprite(if the sprite has a similar pink use another color like neon green or teal or something. I don’t suggest black or white) 2.) it gives me something to add to the image, weither I would be making parts of the body small or just wanting to fill in parts I want to remove completely.

Step3:
Crop!

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Sonson3.jpg

Remove extra material from your work.(leave a little because you may want to make areas larger or smaller so don’t crop exactly to the pixels of the character)

Step4:
Resize!

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Sonsonreszie.jpg

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Sonsonreszie2.jpg

PSP like most Photo edit programs has this. Nothing new for Photo pros (I’m anything but lol)

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Image25.png

As you can see this is the size I will end up with when the job is done.

Step5:
A piece from here and a Piece from there!

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Sonson2.jpg

I start with her tail(in this case it’s up to the user where to start) working it into shape. (hehe) As you can see in the image I can’t just make 1by1 pixels because the tail doesn’t look right.

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w297/ryuushiro/Image26.png

You can see I’ve added to it in some places to give it a correct look.

For anyone wondering, I’ve resized most of the photos because they would be too big for the forum. I’m working in 1680x1050 and I would think that would clutter up the page lol.

That’s basically it. I work like that until the image is complete(or until I decide to make it more detailed, adding colors that aren’t there or detail that I feel should be there)

Here is the finished product:

Ok next up Captain America.

Ok time for some rest…

Update:P

Finally got back to working on these, thought i’d show a little WIP.

Since I don’t know how Udon is creating their sprites, i decided to limit myself with the original palette from SFII, but I doubled the colors. Still rather rough, but I’m not sure when i’ll be able to finish

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b350/Jashugan/SFII_Ryu_JashWIPa.png

Excellent job Jashugan, better than Udons!

Jashugan it does look great but… His hair should be a little more sloppy and his left arm is a little small. Other then that it’s really well done.

Awesome reinterpretation! Thanks for taking away Ryu’s pain of being put in a contortionist twist by Capcom. (with his front leg closer than his back leg while still having his upper body facing his opponent).

As I stated earlier in this thread I got a new delivery for ya.

Vulcano Rosso and my favourite Mishima.

Next is Dee Jay.

Boo Mishima! lol Man I remember SFEXP3 when PS2 first came out… That game was a lot of fun but not a great SF game…

damn. why can’t we get this kind of quality from udon? seriously?
