Help With This Game

Ok, I have quite a bit to type in here, but I’ll try my best to keep it short.

I bought Street Fighter Anniversary Edition about 5 months ago, and have never actually taken the game all that seriously, until up about 4 weeks ago. I don’t exactly know what drew me to SRK in the first place, but I believe I found it while searching for guides on the game. I had visited SRK before, about a year ago during the 2006 EVO tournament. I watched the 3rd Strike videos for that year, but I didn’t really care for it at all.

I started playing Super Turbo about 4 weeks ago as I mentioned before. But, to be honest with you I was not good at all. I lost to the arcade, (I’ve heard it’s hard for many people though) couldn’t execute moves, couldn’t execute specials etc.

Recently, I’ve been able to due a few Hadoukens (I think that’s how it’s spelled) and other moves with the same button input and the rest of my strategy was pretty much button-mashing. I’ve only beaten the arcade once on the easiest mode, and it took me about 50-60+ battles just to do that.

I’ve thought about getting into this game more competitively, but I’m not seeming to improve. I’ve scanned T. Akiba’s page, though I didn’t even understand the English aspects of the game let alone the Japanese. (I don’t know the the terminology in ST very well) I’ve scanned the Wiki briefly skipping basically everything except for the characters, and I can’t even choose a character to practice with myself.

Now, why have I come here? This is probably the largest Street Fighter site on the internet, and I’ve seen tournament player come here to post on the forums. I’m sure someone could help me with my play. Below I will sum up what I need help with. Perhaps someone could reccomend me a video or some guide or something?

  1. Don’t know what character to play.
  2. Don’t know the terminology.
  3. Can’t execute moves.
  4. Overall, not very good.

I don’t have really anyone to practice with because nobody really knows about the game locally. Some do, but they are probably above my level.

Ice Bomb

P.S I’d honestly appreciate any sort of help that you can give me. I’ve spent about 2 weeks trying to join the forums and just about 15 minutes prior to writing this is when I joined the forums.

A great place to start would be to look at the wiki. There are serval forum posters who have spent alot of time adding to it. NKI’s section is excellent. That is where I would start.

As fatboy stated above hit up the wiki thoroughly. Terminology is listed almost completely on there.

As for a character…just pick one you like. You can check the tier list on many threads or the wiki and go from there. Maybe pick one from mid to top tier to alleviate some early frustrations with matchup problems. Basically all of the characters use the same movements to execute specials in one way or another. So learing a dragon punch with Ryu, :dp: any :p:, will help you excute many other characters moves as they use the same motion.

Overall just practice the basics. You would be surprised how well people do using just the basics and smarts. It’s not all about specials and insane combos. Learning the simple stuff will get you well grounded to work on flashy stuff later on. Watch match videos on Youtube.com to see some high level tourney play and notice how simple it looks sometimes (it’s not simple, since they are using advanced zoning and mind games but it’s all based off solid basics usually). And remember a lot of people have been playing this game for over 10+ years now. Just take your time and you’ll learn fast and have fun doing it

Good Luck and welcome to SRK.

Thank you both. I’ll be sure to do all of your suggestions.

Exactly. Check up on the wiki… Basically learn all the basic movements like what jedi said. Take the game at a steady pace, take your time. get used to the feel of the game and learn the basic strats. Check out these vids from David Sirlin after you’ve covered all fo the basics

I would like to chime my two cents. Being a rather new player in this game myself (I started to learn it back in December) I think I could add a little to this thread. As people above stated, watch match videos on YouTube. When it comes to ST (and technically every other fighting game out there) it has a wealth of footage. Watch the tutorial videos that Ramza126 posted above. Also remember one thing, training mode is your best friend. I repeat, training mode is your best friend. Use it to practice execution of special moves, then move on to basic combos, then cancels ect. Take small steps, it takes time and practice to learn this game.

As for characters, I would suggest starting off learning Ryu, Boxer (Balrog), and O.Sagat (putting on my flame retardant suit for this) once/if you ever get a copy of Capcom Classics Collection vol.2.

If you don’t mind me asking, where exactly do you live? If its anywhere close to me I might be willing to take a small road trip here and there to play against you :wgrin: There is also xbl and Kaillera as well, just watch out for pricks and assholes.

Well I hope that helps you out at some and I hope the best for you.

Thanks for your insite. Unfortunately, I don’t live near Michigan, nor do I live in the United States for that matter. I live in Canada, but Xbox Live is a possibility. (Not at the moment however, since I don’t subscribe to it.)

I’d like to thank the rest of you as well, for providing you suggestions. If anyone else has anything at all to offer, I’d gladly except it.

Ice Bomb

Sorry to take it off-topic but what part of Canada do you live in? I just wanted to ask out of curiousity since there are an extremely limited amount of hardcore ST players (about 4 ) in the Greater Toronto Area.

Well I’d rather not give away that information, I don’t really like to do that online. But I can tell you that I don’t live in Toronto.

Back to topic though, I was reading through the comments and many of you said to learn the basics. Jedi probably stated what the basics were most thoroughly, but I don’t know what exactly they are. Sanjuro stated that I should learn execution, and combos and cancelling. I honestly don’t know exactly where to practice that (what mode) or what cancelling is. I read about it in the wiki, but I don’t really understand the definition there. Could anyone try to clarify? Also, I need a little more specification on character selection. Sanjuro suggested Balrog, Ryu and Old Sagat once/if I get Capcom Classics Collection 2. I could easily go out and buy that game, however, are there any character I could practice that are on both versions, or characters that aren’t banned? (Akuma) I appreciate everyones help, but I need a bit more clarification, and that’s partly the reason I joined these forums. Anyway, I hope you respond SRKers.

Ice Bomb

^ Are you in Alberta? We could use another ST player. :wgrin:

Regardless, you chould try to hook up with your locals and learn from them. You should be able to find some players in every major city I think…

Ok guys thank you very much. I was wondering for a while why no one was posting anymore help for a long time (atleast for me) after I said this:

Now though, I finally realize why my thread has been getting views, but not more posts. It’s because the people who have already posted here have already given me all the information I asked for and more. I just realized that right now. I apologize for trying to be such an information hog. (atleast that’s how I thought of it) I haven’t even played the game lately to try out the stuff you said yet because I was too preoccupied with waiting for someone to post on my thread. Now, that I just re-read all of the posts I realize that I have all the information now. So I’d like to give my final thanks to everyone, you’ve all been a great help. :wgrin: However, if anyone does want to post feel free, but I’m not sure I need it anymore.

P.S Thanks again, i’ll definately start implementing all your ideas this time.

Uh cancelling is like this:
When you do a crouching medium kick with Ryu he thrusts his foot out to kick his opponent and then pulls his foot back in, right? If you do a fireball motion wicked fast as the kick hits, however, that animation gets cancelled --> he doesn’t pull his foot back and instead immediately throws the hadoken. 2 hit combo.

There’s no big trick to cancelling beyond doing it fast fast fast. In fact assuming you have the hang of the fireball command (?) one way to approach that crouching medium kick cancel fireball is like this:
joystick down, right as you begin to swing your hand up press medium kick, swing hand up to towards then press punch.

Another example:
Guile can cancel his crouching strong (<- medium punch) into a flash kick. Get right next to your opponent (CCC2 has a training mode, right? otherwise just go to two player mode with the second player idling) crouch down for a couple seconds and then:
while still holding down on the joystick hit medium punch and immediately move the joystick up and press kick. BuhBAP. Like that. If this doesn’t work:
a) you need to charge the flash kick longer. That means hold down on the joystick for more time before trying it or
b) you aren’t doing the cancel input fast enough. BuhBAP. gotta be QUICK. Down+punch -> up+kick with no delay in between.

Oh pardon the conflicting advice but forget O.Sagat and Balrog. The SF2 series is all about Ryu and Guile. Get a feel for one of those two and then work on the other one before you move on to other characters. If you can beat the computer on medium difficulty with both Ryu and Guile you’re well on your way.

Thanks for that advice Nohoho, I think that cleared up the last two problems that were still on my mind.

Well I know I said that I that I didn’t need anymore help, but that was when I was preparing, pre-game. Nohoho said that I should practice with Guile and Ryu before I learn other characters. So I’ve used a little bit of both of them, and currently I’ve been training with Guile. Now here’s my problem. I understand all the moves in the manual with Guile, but I can’t use his super. In fact it’s so difficult to use, that I only used it once, out of countless tries, and that one time was when I was button-mashing out of boredom. Can someone tell me how to do this move, it’s very hard.

Regards,
Ice Bomb

Doing his super requires pretty strict timing and also a pretty difficult input. The way I do it is

Charge down+back for 2 seconds, then go to down+ toward, down+back, and finally to up+forward. basically its like drawing straight lines in that shape. Like down+back to down+toward is a straight line, and then the same applies when going from down+back to up+toward. Just don’t get nervous or anything, you get the hang of it and pulling it off will become very easy. take your time

Thanks Ramza, I understand what you mean with the lines. That was a good explanation, I’ll go and get back on the game to try how you suggested.

Regards,
Ice Bomb

Also, instead of charging down back, down forward, down back, up forward you can substitute up forward for up back. Its alot easier and I tend to pull Guile’s supers off alot more consistently by doing it that way. Just remember after moving it to down forward to do the down back to up back in one, smooth motion.

Well, I’ve been at it for atleast an hour, and guess what? Not one Super. I can’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I think it might be that I’m rolling the stick across the bottom of the the thing. I’m supposed to move it straight from down-back to down-forward right? I’ve been trying that, and I think I’ve been doing it properly, however, the computer doesn’t. Do you think you could possibly tell me what I’m doing wrong? I’ll try and tell you exactly what I’m doing.

  1. First I charge the move in down back.
  2. I switch to down forward. (Not entirely sure if I am doing it properly, I think either I try to make sure it goes directly from Down Back to Down Forward precisely and the transition is too slow. Or I do the above fast, and the stick skims the bottom of the circle thing that it’s in.)
  3. Switch from Down Forward to Down Back. (I’m not sure if I’m doing it right here either for the same reasons as number 2.)
  4. I move to Up Forward.

Sanjuro: In the first ten minutes I tried doing the move to Up Back, but it didn’t work then either.

Hope Someone Can Help,
Ice Bomb

Forget the super dude. Worry about that shit later.

Here’s something else to try for Guile instead: beat CPU Zangief with only standing medium kicks. (including towards, neutral, back versions)

If you can do that: beat CPU DeeJay with only standing medium kicks. (!)

Or: beat CPU DeeJay with only flash kicks (without trading with any of his jump attacks. Practicing something called the “deep” flash kick where you do it as late as possible)

If you can find an opponent who will humor you (rope in a roomate/ younger brother or something) try playing Ryu vs. Ryu with nothing but crouching roundhouse kicks. Or Guile vs. Guile with nothing but crouching medium kicks. Or Ryu vs. Guile, etc.

I don’t live in Toronto too, that’s why I said GTA. If you live in the low outskirts like Sarnia/Windsor (I don’t know if London is active and I’m unaware of Kitchener/Waterloo/Guelph area), then competition would be extremely hard to find.
