Help stopping soda addiction?

I too have the same problem , i get to the point where i dont even care i just cant stop my marlboro red and coke addiction

Drink Ginger ale. Then move down to carbonated flavor water. Then water. Grow a pair while you’re at it.

I hate the taste of coffee. And its not because I think coffee sucks, I just can’t get used to the taste, nor do I want to force myself to get used to it. And for those suggesting beer, I don’t want to quit an addiction just to start another one. Besides, I dont even like beer…like, at all! And Im not about to start drinking it just for the “effect” either. Ill stick to water and juice like some of the people here suggested.

dude… cocaine

Whether you taper off or just stop completely, you have to accept drinking beverages that aren’t sweet. Slice up an apple or orange or something… eat that, then chase it with H2O. Try drinking seltzer water if you like the fizz.

Oh sick job, idiot. “yah i know dats why its bad for u, but since i know dat already let me ignore it. so why is it bad again, excluding the reason for it being bad.”

Increases in appetite, on-top of studied ‘mental’ effects in increase of consumption as well. “It’s diet dont matter.”

A lot of Diet Drinks use harmful chemicals to produce a “Regular” taste. Bad Chemicals, if you’re too stupid for that too.

I didn’t have much trouble giving it up, but its certainly worth it. Drinking water most of the time is cheaper and I lost over 25 pounds after i quit soda and fast food. I used to weighed 195 a few years ago and today i weigh 170 which i have weighed close to for a couple years now.

Now cutting the refined sugar content of my diet now is giving me problems, i get cravings pretty bad after a day or so, i think its harder for me because i currently don’t plan to give refined sugar up entirely so I keep exposing myself to it. Fruit seems to help alot with the cravings though, i imagine fruit juice would likely be a good way to satisfy the sugar aspect of your soda addiction when just satisfying your thirst with water won’t satisfy you.

Pretty much this! I did this so much my freshman year of college before class, cause it was much cheaper than anything at the cafeteria, and was on the way.

Op needs to just get on that bottled water craze. Just be cheap and get that Nestle Pure Life stuff for like 4 dollars for 24 bottles.

Are you sure you have hypothyroidism or other such disorder? When i was younger & really overweight i thought the same too, but actually got tested.

Turns out my thyroid was perfectly healthy, i just had the same problem the majority of other obese fools due in this day & age: shitty lifestyle/health habits.

Once i got off my ass though, developed some actual disipline, willpower, and put together a “decent” diet/fitness routine for my new lifestyle. Problem solved.

Part of this of coarse was learning to say NO and PERMANENTLY remove such foods from said lifestyle. Sugared drinks, and any and all manner of candy & pastries were logically the first to go.

I know many will find that harsh since all their lives they’ve had such foods included as a “normal” part of life, and can’t imagine going without them indefinitly. Sorry but that crap has simply got to go people.

Those who insist on keeping such food products in their life and attempt that juggling act, inevitably 90% will yoyo the weight back because of it. So many people out there simply have no sense of their own strengths & weaknesses. You have those types who preach about moderation and what not, but the majority of individuals out there simply can’t stop after that 1 slice of cake, and thats only natural. Like a junkie getting that taste of the addiction again.

I could go on and on, but yeah---- After 24+years of being a fatass, tons of trial & error, running into the same walls over the years, climbing down from the 310lb+ mark at least 5 times over, etc. I know whats up and how things work.

don’t play dumb now. I was asking why the main difference, artificial sweeteners, were bad. just saying they are bad doesn’t cut it.

ok, so it’s just possible increases in appetite and “bad” chemicals. lol

I’m sure it’s probably already been said but you should just try to drink water instead. Keep a few bottles in the fridge so it’s cold then get one whenever you’re thirsty. A lot of people don’t like it but if you drink it enough the taste will grow on you.

Water is pretty much the healthiest thing ever too, drinking it will solve a lot of health problems and just make you feel better in general.

Those “generic 1-a-days” are also an easy way to get too much of some vitamins and minerals, especially iron, which can be highly toxic when there’s too much in your system. And if you completely cut out sugar, that’s worse. The human body needs some dietary sugar to function, just like you need to have some fat. Your best bet for ditching soda is to get some (actual) 100% juice. Read the label and make sure it’s not “100% <small print> weight/volume </small print>”. And no, not all sugars are created equal. Fructose (the majority sugar in fruit) and lactose (the sugar in milk) are better sugars than sucrose (cane sugar). (Assuming, of course, you aren’t lactose intolerant on the second one.)

Another option would be veggie juices. Lots of good flavor, and less sugar (unless you have straight carrot juice, they nearly have as much sugar as fruits). But most of the time when you’re thirsty, water is a good idea.

First off, As their name suggests, they should only be taken 1-a-day. Few will overdose on them. Personally, i take 1 twice daily but no more than that.

Second, the body excretes any additional vitmains & minerals it does not need in urine. Its simply NOT going to allow the build-up to get that bad. Unless someone crazy overdoses on the stuff, but again, who the hell is going to do that? 95% of most people don’t take enough vitamins as it is lol.

Not true. You see the human body is a complex machine, designed to evolve and ADAPT to circumstances, such as a lack of an element. It simply will not crumble and fold like pitiful house of cards when difficulties arise.

Sugar and other carbohydrates are only the body’s preferred source of energy because it is the EASIEST to break down. When deprived of sugars the body will naturally whine and bitch and make one feel bad at first, but overtime it will learn to go without it and adapt to better use other elements, such as fats.

In fact the better physical shape a person is in, the easier it is for the body to dip into those fat stores burn for energy. Also fats yield twice as much energy as sugars/carbs.

And i can confidently say all this with my own personal experience of being a dedicated, STRICT low-carber, i’ve always aimed for as close to zero as possible, and not only am in awesome shape today but i’ve sustained this stint non-stop for the past 3 YEARS.

Now don’t get me wrong, i’m not recommending anyone do what i do. The reality of the situation is that Low-carb dieting is pretty hardcore. The majority do NOT have the willpower & determination sustain it for a long as i have, they’ll have caved after a while. All the steak in the world won’t substitute for that oh-so awesome slice of cake. So if i were to train anyone i’d put them on another diet, but still have them refrain from all sugared drinks/candy/etc. As i’ve said earlier, the pitfall for over-consumption is simply too high, EVERYBODY falls into it. Human nature.

Edit: And before anyone comments about how the brain can’t function properly without carbs, despite my 3 year non-stop stint, i’m currently taking demanding classes in college like High-level Biology and Physics. Stuff that would make the average carb-laden brains collapse on themselves like black hole, and i am making A’s right now lol(well i got a B in that one class but still).

Fuck. Some amazing answers in this thread.

Hell, I would’ve just said “Drink Water”.

Naked Juices are the truth. Drink one of the those and you’ll be hooked and won’t even want to drink soda.
I’ve been cold turkey off soda for 4 months now just drinking water and the Naked Juice.

Umm… that only functions for water-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them in in excess, will stick around and are not that easy to get rid of. And excess iron can only be gotten rid of through blood loss.

If “excess vitamins and minerals were excreted through urine” as you say, how would it be possible for there to be vitamin overdoses? If you are eating a proper diet, you don’t need a multivitamin because you’re getting all the stuff you need in your food. And fruits are part of a proper diet, as are other carb sources. Maybe you have a funky body chemistry that works without carbs, but for most people, cutting out carbs puts the metabolism into “starvation mode”, where it packs more on because it thinks that food is getting scarce, so that you don’t starve. Most people feel like crap without at least some carbs and fat in their diet for that reason.

Seriously, going low-to-no-carb is exceptionally unhealthy for 95% of people. That’s why you should only do so under medical supervision. EVEN DIABETICS AREN’T TOLD TO GO ZERO CARB, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

The body can only shuffle out stuff so fast in urine. If one were to take like, half of the damn bottle at once it could not react fast enough.

Ahh but how many out there are REALLY getting everything they need in what they eat? Many aren’t.

And even those that go out of their way to do so, what of the quality of food? Stuff in restaurants, cafeterias, store bought, etc, have varying cooking styles. Some foods may have been prepared/cooked in a way where it LOSES a lot of the stuff one would think it would have.

I’m a big-time fitness buff and just don’t see why one should take any chances, and or are make such assumptions that they’re getting what they need. Just take a vitamin supplement to be sure.

Ofcoarse since i do low-carb 24/7 i realize there is a lot i’m missing, so i take supplements like that everyday.

Like i said before, the body is strong and designed to ADAPT. It will naturally bitch & moan at first though when deprived of something like carbs, but eventually it will learn to not bother and get better at making Good use of what it IS getting instead. Such as getting Good at breaking down fats for the energy it needs.

This goes double as stated previously for those who are active and in-shape. In fact the body makes use of fats during activities much more so than carbs. Carbs are only utilized at first for that explosive start, but after about 10-20 minutes of sustained exercise, it shifts gears to use FATS to power it through to the end.

And the body only goes into starvation mode when you are actually STARVING it. I get plenty of little meals through out every day in order to keep the metabolism cranking. As long as you are eating SOMETHING.

Low-carb is nowhere near that bad as some think lol. The majority just have never bothered to stick with it, day in and day out like i have, long enough to see what happens.

Most will QUIT not long after the body starts whining about the lack of carbs(feelings of sluggishness), and that craving for something like cake gets to be too high.

I NEVER go off the diet. The most i’ll do is just be a little “less strict” occasionally. Stuff like almonds & sunflower seeds, very low in carbs.

man up!

seltzer is a good alternative if you need a placeholder. they all kinda taste wonky but you get used to it.

If you struggle with caffeine, don’t try anything harder. I went from drinking coke to c2 (not around anymore) and just drank 1 every other day. Coke is pretty bad, but drinking it occasionally is no big deal.

It’s not that hard to quit cold turkey. Just make sure that whenever you feel the need to drink something or when you’re thirsty that you’re drink water. Having a bottle or jug of water around you makes it easier.

When I quit I don’t get the headaches though. I’m not sure why.
