Help me coin a new term

Ok so you’ve heard of “The Streisand Effect” which is the more you try to bury or censor something, the more popular it becomes. That by making a controversy out of something it makes the story even bigger than it would have been had you left it alone.

Or how about “The Mandella Effect”, the theory that mass-false memories could be the result of alternate dimensions.

Or “Jump the Shark”. This one i never really got. I get “jump the gun”, which means you, well, jumped the gun, spoke too soon or whatever. I guess Jump the shark is like, jumping the gun but taken to an absurd level? Maybe someone can help me with that.

So anyways you get the idea.

Here’s what I’m looking to come up with a name for, and i need yalls help with it.

So ok. Anyone here listen to rock or metal music when they were younger? Say teenage or even 20s or even now. If you’ve ever followed bands, certain bands that are really good, but underground still. Maybe they haven’t been signed to a major label yet, or they just haven’t found mainstream success, whatever the case is, this band has a small but very dedicated hardcore cult following. I’ll give you an example. In the mid 90s Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Deftones were those bands. I’ll throw Coal Chamber in there, though they never got big. Anyways. It was a new sound, not many people new about it but those of thus that did felt special. Like these are our bands, and we’re so cool right (lol) cause only we know about them.

Then what what happens. Well suddenly the bands come out with a big album or whatever get extremely popular and suddenly EVERYONE knows about them and everyone is listening to them. Then what happens; the original fans, the hardcore fans who were with that band from the beginning turn their backs on the band and say “you sold out! Omg sell outs OMG they suck now ewww it’s not special anymore eww it’s mainstream”.

Saw this happen with Green Day (to a small extent) saw it happen with Korn, Limp Bizkit, not Deftones they were safe because they didn’t get as-big. And I’ll be honest I’m totally guilty myself of saying, yeah fuck those bands they suck now. I was that guy but I was also 13 lol.

Some bands legitamitely sell out. It depends on what you view as selling out, but to me just simply becoming big and popular isn’t selling out. It’s just that, hey, this band is awesome, you’ve always known it, now the entire world knows it, what’s wrong with that. Nothing IMO. But you’ll always have that group of people that will shun them just because they are big. It became a joke where you’re only cool if you listen to some group nobodies ever heard of.

But anyways so to me selling out is when you specifically change, not organically or because you wanted to, but because a record executive or producer told you to. Bring Me The Horizon is the absolute epitome of this IMO. Nobody can tell me with a straight face that Oliver Sykes suddenly at age 25 went through puberty and started sounding exactly like Chester Bennington at the exact moment they get signed for the first time to a major label. Lol give me a break. And it’s such a tragedy because BMTH was the most unique sound in metal, especially in terms of vocals but really in terms of everything, they pretty much were the modern metal movement 2.0 post Korn/Slipknot/Linkin Park, and they fucking changed his voice and he agreed for money because Linkin Park is the biggest metal band of all time (never liked them sorry). They coached him to sound like Linkin Park to sell more records and reach a bigger audience that’s it. He did it for the money he sold out that is the literal defintion.

So yes it does happen, but for every example of this there are 100 examples where it’s simply not the case. Korn never sold out. Ok Got Milk ads are lame, but artistically and aurally, no way, Korn has stayed pretty consistently good and only changed organically not at the whim of some record executive. Limp Bizkit weren’t sell outs they were just frauds who always sucked. Another band that gets heat from hardcore Punk fans is Green Day, but if you listen to Green Day demos and recorded shows prior to Dookie, it’s literally Dookie it sounds exactly the same, just, recorded in a fucking garage lol.

Anyways. So if you follow WTF I’m talking about and are still with me. What I’m trying to come up with, is a name for this “effect”, this effect being, fans who turn on a band for selling out when in fact said band has not sold out. I’m looking for a name for this phenomena of fans that turn their backs on someone for “selling out” when in fact they have not sold out. A name for these kinds of fans, these special snowflakes who think you’re only cool if you listen to some band nobodies ever heard of. A name to label these dumb “fans” and this phenomena.

And it’s not just music. This phenomena can happen with… comedians, writers, radio hosts tv people anyone really. I’m trying to think of another good example. Anyways it mostly pertains to music, and if you weren’t a grungy kid who listened to rock music and went through a punk phase a metal phase an emo phase until you finally grew up you might now know WTF I’m talking about lol, but hopefully you understand and like I said guys I’m looking for a name for these kinds of people. I’m sure this happens with rappers too. Err. Maybe lol, selling out kinda seems the point to much rap lol. Get the girls get the money.

Anyways. HELP. Thanks for reading. Please like the video and hit the subscribe button if you’re new.

Jumping the shark is doing something really fucking ridiculous without a good reason.

For instance, one might say Capcom jumped the shark when they put auto-block/throw tech gems in SFxTK.

EDIT:I only read the first paragraph or two. Get to the point.

I can absolutely relate to this but until now I never felt like this type of person, or this type of phenomena, deserved its own name. You’ll want to start by having a streamlined, concrete definition, though; we can’t just copy-paste that shit into Urban Dictionary.

“Unfounded opposition to the commercial success of a cherished artist.”

It’s far from a perfect definition, but maybe you can go from there.

If its a good thing call it the NickRocks

If its a bad thing call it the angelpalm

My understanding of Jump the Shark is it describes the pivotal moment a show nosedives in terms of quality. It comes from the show Happy Days in which there was an episode when Fonzie literally jumped over a shark, and that episode is highlighted as the point the show started going downhill. You can find that clip on youtube.

I was under the impression that we call people hipsters when they dislike their bands because they became popular, and they’ll say things like, “I liked them before they were cool.”

Hmm. Well Hipster means a lot of things though. Need something very specific to this exact part of hipsterdom.

Oh that’s damn near perfect well done.

Now we just need a name…

I’m thinking something with Tard in it. Like, Hipstertard? You’re Hipstertarding… nah that’s not it. Nah. Idk. I suck at this. Something Syndrome maybe. Always been a fan of the word syndrome.

You’re suffering from Hipsterbolic Syndrome, then Urban Dictionary: “unfounded opposition to a cherished artist”. Hmm.

The sellout delusion? The Hipsterbolic Delusion Syndrome.

Those kind of people are called hipsters

Yes but Hipster is too general. Err. Idk now that I think about it, it does fit.

But when you call someone a hipster, it could mean a whole bunch of different things. It’s not super specific to this one thing. I’m feeling Histerbolic or “you’re suffering from Hipsterbole”. Hipsterbole?

When somebody says “I used to like them before they got big” Just call them hipsters and move on with your life.

Didn’t Korn have a dubstep album?
Also…that Jay-Z/Linkin Park Mashup album…

“Plow the Lillies!”

“Rappin the crayon on the Skippytow”

But if there ever was a band who sold out, it was Metallica.

Metallica just started to suck.

Speaks about metal, yet not a single band mentioned in his post is metal
