Help! External speakers with Asus VH236H

I recently bought an Asus VH236H to play my Xbox 360 on. I’m not too impressed with the built in speakers, so I’m looking towards using a pair of external speakers that I have. The only problem is that there is only an audio input port. Not an audio output port. Since the monitor has built in speakers, is it possible to run external speakers on it? I’ve seen online where people have posted that they use their external speakers rather than the built in ones, but none of them explain how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does the 360 support separate audio output? If so, you can try running speakers directly from the console itself.

Not sure. It’s the Xbox 360 slim. The newer model.

Uh, unless you’re talking about a different model, the VH236H definitely has an audio out port. In fact, it has audio out AND audio in ports. Are you sure you didn’t over look the ports? One is black, one is green.

I must have overlooked it. I can’t test it out right now, but I do see a black port. This is the audio out? It doesn’t say audio out on the sticker that describes the ports. I seriously never even saw that black port, ha.

Have you tried a simple audio coupler? Something like this?

360 -> Monitor -> 3.5mm Male to Male cable -> 3.5mm Fem/Fem coupler -> Speakers

Use the cable that came with the monitor. At least, I got one with my VW246H.

Yes, it has both ports. Find them and try each one. Pretty sure the green one is out. Try both if unsure.
I’m sure it also has a SPDIF coaxial digital audio out (orange connector) if you have a fancier sound system.

The new XBox has a digital out on it, but if you’re using the VGA cable it normally splits the Audio away from the VGA end of the plug.

So you should get the choice of plugging Digital straight in to a reciever and having external speakers that way, or by just using the ol’ White+Red co-axial connectors.

Actually there’s an audio output port

Its a real ninja, its right above the audio input port. If you look in the manual, the audio output port exists.

If you really can’t find it, you can always butcher the original cable’s plastic casing so that you can fit both an HDMI and the oversized AV cable.

Wait a minute!!! before you go all crazy and trying all this different ideas, I own multiple VH236H’s and they all have an audio out.

it’s the green one. I did the mistake of hooking it up to the audio in (black) the first time and was going nuts until I flipped the whole thing over.

If you have a nice set of speakers fed in via the TOS-Link/optical port, I recommend plugging them straight through there instead.

Everyone else is telling me the black port is the audio out? I’ve hooked them into the green port and sound still came through the monitor. Haven’t had a chance to try the black port yet.

Wait, how are you connecting your 360 to your monitor? HDMI or VGA?

LMAO!!! why didn’t anybody asked this first??? if his doing it with a vga all it’s not going to work.

Why wouldn’t it?
To use external speakers go to radio shack and buy single male to 2 female Y-cable, RCA coupler, and a rca male and 1/8 plug adapter ( this piece will connect speaker audio cable ). Its a little confusing at first but really easy to see and figure out. So from the xbox to monitor will be - rca male to 1/8 adapter > rca female to female coupler > Y cable > Y cables connect to xbox red/white audio cables. Shouldn’t cost more than 15$ for everything. I have always used external speakers gaming. If you still need help ill take a picture.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this guy is having the same issue as me so I thought I would post in here as well.

Just got a Asus VW246H monitor and I’m trying to use external speakers instead of the internal speakers of my monitor. Right now I have the 360 connected to my monitor through HDMI. When I plugged in my Dell speakers that came with my computer to my monitor, I’m only getting sound from the internal speakers, not the Dell speakers. I’m plugging in my Dell speakers into that green port on my monitor with the green cord from my Dell speakers.

If anyone can help me who is new to using a PC monitor as a console gaming screen, that would be great.

ME IS STUPID

Plug it into the black port. That one is for output. The green one is for input.

Like I said, me is dumb. Tried that earlier and it didn’t work. Maybe it was because the monitor’s volume was all the way down.

Almost certainly ~this~. The output on those is acting like a headphone socket, so the volume on the device (monitor) needs to be high enough for the speakers to then amplify them. Note that the volume could need to be VERY high on the device for the speakers to then amp it - every monitor is different.

Alternatively, assuming you have volume control on the speakers, you can get the A/V adaptor that has SP/DIF and Red/White co-axial ports on it (I have one of these - £3 from Ebay), and convert the Red/White coax to 3.5mm headphone socket. That way the monitor doesn’t have to do anything with the audio, and the audio is coming straight from the Xbox. The audio comes out at ‘line level’ so you shouldn’t have any issues with amping that correctly.

is there anyway that sound can play through both the headphones(hooked up through audio out) and the speakers on the asus monitor?
