Help! External speakers with Asus VH236H

As much as I like the color and sharp resolution of my Asus monitor – it’s the best computer monitor I’ve owned with respect to color and image sharpness --, my last monitor – a Philips that lived roughly 14.5 years – had much better speakers. I could actually HEAR the sound at a reasonable volume setting level and it wasn’t tinny/inaudible like the Asus is even at MAXIMUM volume setting!

If you have a choice between an Asus and Acer – and the cheaper (usually the Acer) doesn’t have built-in speakers --, go with the cheaper one. The Asus speakers suck…

(OTOH, the Asus’ headphone audio-out is reasonable. But I didn’t buy a monitor with speakers to listen to audio through headphones.)

How’d I never notice it had an audio out? That would have saved me buying an adapter…

I would hope that most people on here bought the Evo monitor because of its low input lag… Otherwise you might as well spend that money on whatever laggy cheaper monitor you can find.

For anyone that stumbles across this thread even though it is soooo old! The year is 2014. I have recently acquired an Asus(I don’t know what the hell the model # it is) monitor. I’m using my Asus as both an external monitor for my Laptop and as a TV screen. This is a bit of a small pain in the ass, cause of course both my Laptop and my cable plug in via HDMI. So, I have to do a cable swap twice a day(no big deal)

So, any whooo, on to your basic and very simple external speaker hook up. I DON’T CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE SAYS! PLUG YOUR EXTERNAL SPEAKER CABLE(might be lime green in color) INTO THE BLACK PORT!!. You’ll find it is a lil hard to see without good light or the use of a flashlight. But, trust me it is there right next to the lime green port you DON’T want to use. Make sure all your cables are tight and you have power to your speakers. Now, at this point you might have a lil red Ø or maybe an X over your speaker symbol in the lower right hand corner of your monitor. Simply click on it and most windows OS’s will auto run a troubleshooter. When you see the fix it options come up, click on the one that will most likely have the words “Display Audio” in the description. Make this your default sound setting and disable any other audio options. Now, make sure you hit apply or ok and the troubleshooter should finish it’s job and say problem fixed. Now, take your newly plugged in speaker for a test run(making sure it’s working at all sound levels) They should be working just fine and dandy from here on out.

Now, if you are using it for a “Console” gaming monitor for systems such as PS3, X-Box and or Wii(not a console player so I don’t know what if any others might be out there) Most if not all these days come ready to be hooked up via HDMI ports. Simply plug your HDMI cables from the back of your “Console” into your monitor and follow the simple instructions I provided above for hooking up your external speakers.

Well, I hope I made everything I said simple, easy to follow and last but not least helpful.

Enjoy your awesome new sound and always remember FOR THE HORDE!!!

That port is a ninja. My mind has been blown. Had this dilemma several times over the years. Bless you all

I had someone else hook my speakers up for me when I first got this monitor, and unhooked them a few years ago while moving. I’ve been using the awful built in speakers this whole time, and this whole time the problem was that the stupid port was out of formation and invisible from most angles!? Ug, couldn’t feel dumber.
