I think you misunderstood something, I am not defending halo’s place in the MLG circuit, I am defending the false accusations that editing halo does make sense. It does because if MLG had kids running around spray n’ praying with assault rifles, it would be a bigger laughing stock than it already is. As I said early in this thread I DO NOT approve of MLG’s game choices, but halo has been in mlg since the start and its not going to change, difference is older halos were much more competitive, halo 3 is a joke compared to them. And do think I’m the only person that knows this, the general consent on the MLG forums is Halo 1>>>>>>>>>>>Halo 2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Halo 3. Problem is that MLG is never going to drop the newer halo for the older one so it’s what they are stuck with and they are trying to make the best of it.
Now with SF4 the stars have aligned and we have a game that is both competitive AND popular. And MLG is actual considering to pick it up. MLG can either continue picking up the crappy games that need a million edits to actually work, or we can get things changed and have them pick up a truly competitive game.
Also about SF4 game edit, I checked gamebattle.com, which is a partner site with MLG that runs a small, free SF4 online tourney and their rules are:
Rounds (Best Of): 5
Time Limit: 99
Private Slots: On
Handicap: Off
No banned characters, no messed up rules. MLG will probably be using the same thing.
This guy basically made a series of rants about how halo 3 sucks and what its problems are and MLG themselves put them on the homepage. I was a little confused on this.
Sponsors get what sponsors want, but if sponsors actual approve of a good game competitive game like SF4, then we will be helping them actual fix their bad games issue.
You know, technically MLG settings are a Halo 3 default since about Spring 2008 or so anyways. It’s the only “standard” 4v4 playlist in matchmaking with both slayer and objective gametypes.
You actually can’t play the shipped on the disk gametypes in matchmaking at all, since Bungie removed the excess of Maulers, and later fixed some environment exploits and stupid weapon and power-up placements (usually with them ending up more like MLG, like Narrows). Team Slayer has new Foundry layouts as well as the other DLC maps. BR start gametypes are now in every playlist.
Really, most of the stuff that’s removed in MLG is removed just because it was totally useless and in the way. 99.9% of the time some crappy redundant weapon lying on the ground was more likely to interfere with picking up an objective or throwing a grenade than actually get picked up and used.
Back when mlg joined with evo back in 2k5 there were problems.
lack of respect between parties(honestly it went both ways and I’m sure both sides feel that they were the ones that were victimized)
horrible payout (yes lots of money, but in the months leading up to evo some of our players went to their test tournaments and won easily, but had to wait months for a check to come in. Something that they weren’t used to from regular tournaments)
Following that several of us joined their website only to find threads on how to do a fireball. and saw how they wanted nothing to do with the SD 2D fighting game genre. They didn’t believe that it would look as good as DoA4 which they had at the time, they didn’t believe that the casual crowd would understand whats going on and a few other BS reasons that I can’t think of at the moment. Now with S/SF4 they suddenly are reconsidering it? Honestly whats changed between the days we labored to get 3s, MvC2, ST, GG even Tekken/VF onto the list? Its still run by the same people. Yes, its a new game with new HD graphics but thats a horrible reason to now decide to bring it in. What about the casual fan following whats going on? If they soulhardily believed that a game like ST was too chaotic for the casual watcher to understand. What makes you think that now SF4 is going to be any better?
If they couldn’t understand this
-Special Moves
-Projectiles
-Invincible Frames
-Negative Edging
-Multiple Character Choices
-Grabs\Grappling Moves
-Combos
-Dizziness
-Reversals
-Juggles
-Multi-part Special Attacks
-Alternate Version of Characters
-Supers
and thats all basic stuff from SF- ST. How are they going to understand plinking? FADC? Vortex’s, EX moves, Ultras?
By MLG’s very admition real FG’s are too complex for their audience, yet we are now to believe that suddenly SF4 has become a popular game with new HD 3D graphics that suddenly all those issues that they had with it in the beginning no longer exist?
and what does that prove? that mlg is now in it for the money? Yes, thats a fact that I can now go sleep comfortably at night knowing. The only reason what so ever that MLG is even remotely interested in our genre again is to exploit the hundreds of thousands of people that actually bought SF4. SF2HF getting over a million DLs on XBLA? Naw, thats insignificant, HDR doing similar on both PSN and XBLA? Naw that doesn’t count too. MvC2 HD for PSN and XLBA (which outsold all of them)? No, who gives a rats ass about that. Give us SF4 instead. But don’t give it to us a year ago when the game came out on console. Lets wait a year for the hype to die down then think about SF4, so that those stupid FG genre players think that we’re giving them a way out, that we’re doing them a favor.
why would a tekken forum be worth reading on a subject about SF4 in mlg? At best they can offer their opinons on the subject. But they aren’t SF4 players, so again why would we read their opinions?
Tell me whats changed since 5 years ago, why is mlg suddenly considering SF4 when they didn’t give a rats ass about other FG’s that sold as well if not better than SF4?
Maybe you could spend the 5s to click and read about 2 sentences before going off on some more crazy rants.
The only fighting game I can think of that sold in the region of SFIV and Tekken 6 since they dropped Tekken 5 is Soul Calibur IV. They didn’t have Smash at the time either and were rolling pretty comfortably with Halo 3/Gears of War/Rainbow Six Vegas when the last 2 of those 3 were actually popular.
Don’t MLG run closed-access tournaments and online qualifiers, two things that are totally antithetical to how the fighting game scene has always done things (and for good reason)?
I think they just do that so that some people that don’t want to compete can also watch the games. There is nothing stopping you from signing up to play and watching the other matches in your spare time.
The idea of trying to establish games as a spectator sport (which is MLG’s stated aim) is stupid to me and I know a lot of other people feel the same way. The great thing about games is you don’t need anything special to compete. The idea of being a spectator but not a player - or only an at-home player - of a video game is ridiculous to me.
no they dont, where are you people getting this information from? bottom line is they have resources now and credibility, they are offering it to the fighting game community. they need to show sponsors that they have the people willing to view the sf4 stream so the sponsors can throw some money at it. they wont be making money from entry fees.
read the link posted above it was a reply to the questions of prize payouts answered by an mlg employee. if mlg is paying out about 400 000 in prize money every year i dont think paying sf players will be a deal.
This is already possible. There are a crazy amount of streams that happen every day. MLG would not be bringing anything new.
I am an 09 and have no knowledge of the history but from what I’ve read from this thread and my own little experiences with MLG I think this will be the outcome. They will bring nothing new except unneeded bureaucracy to a community that is plenty fine on it’s own.
