I think you’re underestimating the size of MLG or overestimating the size of the fighting game community. MLG could stiff everyone in a hypothetical SF4 and the outrage would remain largely contained here on SRK. It’s not like Katie Couric is going to talk about it on the evening news, it’s unlikely to receive any major attention on your Gamespots or IGNs, and even if it does, very few are going to care and even fewer are going to react. Meanwhile MLG will still have plenty of reach between CSS, Halo, Smash, etc. and that’s what matters most to sponsors.
This shit really bothers me…for a number of reasons. First of all wheres the passion in other game genres? I don’t see it. Motherfuckers driving around the USA in a cramped car for a tournament yelling at the top of their longues in a hotel filled with sweaty crazy fighting game fans shows the passion.
Like, I dunno whats really peoples goal when they want endorsement from bullshit like this. If its money I’d suggest getting a reality check, and go to school and get a job. If its mainstream acceptance or trying to capture peoples attention I don’t see why you need it. Part of whats appealing about the fighting game scene is that its spontaneous order. Everything happens naturally because of each individual persons desire to play a game with others. You feel the passion and energy around everyone, and seeing all the dedication from the community of said game.
Allowing fighting games fall into the corporate realm doesn’t really do anything more for the scene at all besides maybe get more people who are in it for the money and shit. It also doesn’t really add to the scene, but I think would take away a lot from it. Allowing corporate sponsors to have too much say in things would breed a lot of stuff we don’t want. Like new rules on etiquette, coaches, teams (lol), and any other bullshit that happens to try to make these games seem like a sport.
Being new to the scene what really attracts me is the spontaneous order which just seems to come to place because of everyones deep passion for their hobby. I don’t think anything can top this because you know people are doing it for the love of the game, and not how much bank they will be making for coming somewhere.
Like an event here and there like the capcom/gamestop thing is good cuz of exposure. However, I don’t see how getting involved with outside sponsors does anything for anyone really in the long run. I don’t really wanna watch people on TV playing this game, fuck that. It doesn’t make it seem any more legit to people who don’t play these games.
People might say im overreacting, but everything starts off slow in the beginning.
Its a love/hate relationship for me. They do have some very bad qualities like messed up brackets and bad game choices, but they makes the games extremely entertaining with good commentary, good competition, good prize money, and great tournaments so they definatly are doing some things right.
If you guys vote SF4 into MLG we can help fix one of their issues (bad games)
Nothing like describing my crew. lmfao. XD
And like Jdude just said, if we can get this voted in, maybe we can single handedly change some things. Let them know that we as a community mean business, and that if we do something like this we’re serious about it, and we want to make sure that it’s done right. No harm in that.
Just saying. IMO the more exposure the community gets, the better.
You mean those two donkeys known as Activee and Proteq.
They came here during the SF4 Hype with their mission to become top players in SF4…only to fail HARD, and blame it on tournaments like Evo giving shitty pay instead of ballin cash like MLG.
After Evo2K5…not fucking really.
Same, I disagree with a few things that they do, but with Halo…they made it a completely different animal, if they left all the maps default and didn’t change any of the settings…it’d be some boring ass scrubby play. I love MLG Halo 3, it’s fucking intense.
With smash…I guess it’s viewed as a fighting game, so they didn’t want random ass items or stage elements in it, understandable, but I don’t think it should be on the circuit to begin with…
EDIT: They also made gears 1 fucking amazing, that was the most fun I’ve ever had with a shooter…
If I ran a halo tourney, it would suck ass. Why? Aside from thinking console FPS games are a big joke, I haven’t played FPS games competitively since quake 2. I’m not part of the scene. I don’t know what players want and expect out of tourneys.
More often than not, tourneys run by people who aren’t part of the fighting game scene suck ass for the same reason.
Let them have halo. They’re shady as fuck anyway.
If they don’t want to play Halo 3, then they shouldn’t play Halo 3. A new FPS comes out once every 40 seconds. They’ve got plenty of games they can adopt and molest without trying to ruin Halo.
They didn’t ruin it, they got rid of pointless shit that the competitive players didn’t want. It’s still Halo 3, it’s just better than default.
And again, if they don’t want to play Halo 3, there are plenty of other games for them to pick up. This is why Smash Bros. is a perfect fit for them. Bullshit rationalization.
You presume MLG has nobody who knows anything about fighters and no fighting game players. There’s a reason Gran Calc has been playing all over east coast tournaments and at Evo just to try and deal with that kind of belief. Can I say that guarantees they’ll be perfectly run? Of course not. But at least try to respect effort, the knowledge is there, it’s just a matter of whether it gets applied properly.
MLG is at its core a Halo league, and a lot of their sponsorship comes from Microsoft and Bungie. They can afford to not play Halo 3 less than Evo could afford to not play SFIV.
Now this is a cat that gets it.
But how many of those FPS’s are as popular as halo? By editing the game they can actually make the game have a lot more competitiveness while keeping the name HALO slapped onto it. Some people (like myself) actually prefer these edited modes not just competitively, but also because they see them as more fun. If the game creator gave you the tools so edit the game into what you want it to be, then could you really just ignore it and say “it’s fine the way it is” even though it is CLEARLY not? Editing halo makes sense.
Now SF on the other hand need no editing. Shadowrun, a game that was on the MLG circuit a while back had no edits to because they knew it was balanced and competitive. MLG are not idiots. They are not going to change things that will upset people or ruin the game. I’m for SF4 on the circuit now, but if they start banning characters and things, then I will personally make the petition to remove it from mlg. MLG actually listens to members of their community. A while back some people started a petition about wanting the recharge rates of shields in Halo changed and showed tons of proof and reason why it would be more competitive. They tested this change and it managed to make it to the next version of MLG gametypes.
People from the (small, but present) shadowrun community are BEGGING for their game to be put back on the circuit. I have personally played with many players that attended MLG tourneys for SR and they missed them so much and loved the competition and the atmosphere of them so much.
Now SF4 is being given a chance to get in, this may be our last shot to get a good game in there because basically everything from the 2010 season is set except for the questionable SF, and if MLG doesn’t see enough support from this they are probably not giving it another chance. SIGN PEOPLE.
I’m definitely not going to try to respect the effort. They’ve fucked up every chance we’ve given them. They obviously don’t really give a shit.
I speak of a man and not a corporation. Respect didn’t mean I expected you to change your choice either, if you have other reasons that you feel outweigh one employee’s dedication.
This reply is dangerously Smashboardsish. The question of what makes a game “more competitive” has an entirely subjective answer. Just because a game is popular doesn’t mean it can be edited into some other bare-bones game because some players (and don’t kid yourself, it’s some) don’t like some aspects of the game. Like I said, there are a million and a half FPSs out there that fit MLG’s bill as being “more competitive”, just like there are plenty of games out there that fit Smashboards’ bill as being “more competitive”. The fact that 8 million people play Halo doesn’t mean that the game should be stripped naked because 100 or so people want it that way.
Bringing up Halo as a knock against MLG is a moot point. While you may not be a fan of the idea of editing a games settings for competetive play, the community for said game was. You’ll be har pressed to find people against the mlg settings in regards to being competetive. But again, this has nothing to do with street fighter. They are not going to edit the game(or ban characters for that matter just because, my guess is anyway but yea).
I think the server’s down because I’m getting errors when I try to sign.
it does not seem like you have alot of knowledge on the topic of competitive FPS. even on pc since cod1 settings have been edited to make the game more competitive. halo 3 one of the first console shooters to allow that level of customisation. and they allowed it because there is a demand for it. it allows for all the casual players to have their noob friendly weapons and pros to edit the maps to better suit the competitive needs, so everyone wins.
i also dont see whats the point of saying we dont need this. is it just pride? i understand the people who dont trust mlg, but saying u dont need this as a reason not to vote for it is just stupid IMO. it expands the community allows for more events and even some compensation for players. it will be a change to see top sf4 players gather more often and introduce alot of new players to the fighting game scene. i was a part of the FG community way before the FPS community and anytime discussions came up on the mlg forum i would always mention how the FG community is more mature and does things for the benefit of the community, rather than person benefit and IMO this would really benefit the community and the gaming community as a whole. that is if its done properly.
I signed. Also, I’m pretty sure the Street Fighter would be in good hands at MLG. They’ve been running all kinds of tournaments for years now and from what I understand have been working with MarkMan from Capcom to make it’s done correctly.
