What if MLG sponsored events that were already run by the SF community, to start? Send out some MLG staff to help with equipment, advertising etc., so that they can help build events like EVO and all the other majors that are already in place. This way, MLG still has a hand in helping out and all that and can start to build its reputation for if they ever DID decide to add Street Fighter to their main circuit.
How they do it with Halo players is they must attend every MLG event which is normally 4 to 6 a year, but they are allowed to go to any other tournament regardless so long as its not the same day as MLG tournaments. Also MLG has only had contracts with halo players. The GOW, R6V2, shadowrun, WOW, and other players have never been offered contracts.
Edit- And only a small number of Halo players are under contract also, maybe 10 at the most.
I think you have a slight misunderstanding on the contract situation.
You don’t have to sign to play a game. They select people to sign under contract based upon popularity, skill etc. Basically marketable players. The players have a choice of whether they want to sign or not. Also, this only really applies to their biggest game - Halo 3.
Say it is just you or me wanting to play at MLG, all we do is buy a pass, show up, and play, then go home. No signing a contract (maybe a liability form or something about injuries if you are under 18) or anything.
If you don’t go to the first event, and try and hop in midseason, you might have to do online qualifiers, it depends how they set it up. Since everything is so new, and since fighting games dont take up much time compared to games like halo 3 where 1 match can be over an hour, maybe they wont have to do that.
Honestly I think the contract thing is overhyped right now.
In my opinion (based on firsthand experience with other games) the smaller low key tournies will benefit. More large tournies = more hype = more people wanting to prove what they have locally and nationally. The only way anything would be hindered is if dates overlap. That is picking at straws though, since I could say that about any tournament today or ever.
If that’s true then you wouldn’t have to worry about contracts deal or really even sponsors, the only thing a player would need any sort of sponsorship for would be to not pay for travel costs really.
Honestly I hate a lot of ways how gaming has become so commercialized. I don’t mean that it’s bad that gaming is picking up speed and becoming more and more mainstream, but I hate seeing Gamer Fuel, Gamer Grub, Mana Energy Drinks and all sorts of shit with anything “gamer” slapped onto, as if any other brand won’t adequately sustain us. I hate most of the Gamestop commercials that attempt to force their stupid humor via in-game Machinima to boost sales, and the fact that they get exclusive pre-order content. I hate seeing “Fatal1ty” sponsored headsets, keyboards, and graphics cards whenever I go to Microcenter. Everyone treats us like suckers that will buy anything just because it has fucking Mario on it.
Now I like the idea of SFIV on MLG mostly for the fact that I would love to rub it into everyone’s face outside of the FGC who said it would never happen because fighting games “suck” or “aren’t competitive enough” or some bullshit. That, and to show them that our community has grown and thrived without the need for corporate sponsorship and that we can be 100x more civil than all the dumbfuck rival clans out there and still have a great time.
What I don’t like is the idea of people using the community to leverage their own wealth/status. That and just having to deal with more Gamestop/G4/“Gamer Fuel” shit marketing.
Evo partnered with MLG for Evo 2005…it went downhill from there.
MLG showed that they DIDN’T know nor want to appeal to the FGC.
Then there’s the whole “left without paying the winners at Evo 2005” thing…
Man fuck the Halo players. Baby’s first FPS players don’t need to concentrate. They may also want to look into something called “headphones” which have been a staple of Quake 3 and CounterStrike tournaments for years.
The more I hear about MLG the more I don’t like it. I kind of wish I could go back and take my signature off but I don’t think this is going to happen anyway. It seems like MLG has all of the things wrong with competitive gaming without any of the good things.
In order for this to work:
-The rule set needs to remain the competitive standard for Street Fighter 4. Don’t let the Smash idiots anywhere near this game, banning things left and right without any merit whatsoever.
-Get a commentator that actually knows what he’s talking about. Good commentary adds a lot to competitive Street Fighter. Getting the guy that commentates Halo to do SF4 commentary isn’t going to cut it.
-Online qualifiers are a big no no. Maybe if this was HDR or BlazBlue, but SF4’s netcode is ass. It really makes me wonder why they are doing Brawl qualifiers online, as Brawl’s netcode is even worse than SF4.
wanting mlg to have anything to do with the fighting game community would serve as a pretty good litmus for banning users from this forum
No to hate on what you all are trying to do but, as a PRO GAMER (Not just a Street Fighter PRO Player) I DON"T want to see SF4 or any Fighting game on the MLG Roster, and let me tell you why.
- It going to conflict with he local tourney’s when MLG starts the travel.
- Fighting game’s do not hold the weight like FPS do (Keep in mind I love Fighting games with all my heart and soul especial STREET FIGHTER being playing sense 1991. Never missed a B-series Tourney or an EVO)
- It will not have a big audience like Halo 3,MW2,or even Gears 2 (Fighting games don’t appeal to every one)
- You look at the pot size for the games (T6 vs Halo 3)
T6 $60,000 vs Halo 3 $500,000
RSP RSP
1st - $2,500 1st - $20,000
2nd -$1,500 2nd - $12,000
3rd -$1,000 3rd - $8,000
4th -$700 4th - $5,600
5th -$500 5th - $4,000
6th -$350 6th - $2,800
7th -$250 7th - $2,000
8th -$200 8th - $1,600
And these are only the Regular Season Prize NOT National Championship Prize
T6 NCP=$12,500 vs Halo 3 NCP=$100,000
Now you tell me which games people are going to go play. When have you ever placed 8th in a Tournament and you get $1,600 NEVER (I know what you are about to say it’s over a season but still you can place 3rd in 8 SF Tourneys and it still won’t add up to $1,600.)
You all need to look at every aspect before you just go out and say yes to MLG. It’s a lot more than just having the SF Community in light’s on the World Wide Stage. You all have to understand the travel is crazy you have to get sponsor’s who are willing to pay for you to travel at there expense. Plane Tickets,Hotel,Clothing,Food,Controllers,Etc,Etc and with these sponsor’s there is no such thing as a bad day or 1 bad game. As quickly as they pick you up they will let your ass go in a second and get some body else just as quick. (Keep that in mind before you all sign that petition.)
lol at anyone who thinks an fps is more spectator friendly than street fighter…fucking morons
nikeking - any time you want to stop comparing apples to horseradish to try and make a point let us know
Got proof of this? because its just interesting that winners didn’t even get paid for their SC2 finals and Evo2k5…I am just curious about it.
- Have you ever been to a Live MLG? And if not you would know that the Halo 3 Finals has 3x the audience of any EVO ever.
- Next time try to understand that a lot of people don’t like fighting game. If you get on HALO 3 now and then get on SF4 and T6 and KOF12. You will see HALO has more people online then all of these game’s combined
- My point is very valid. I understand you like Street Fighter and you may or my not like FPS but don’t be stupid FPS have always had a better audience than fighting game’s.
- Also understand that the average person who dosen’t like fighting game just look at it as “All they are doing is mashing buttons”
(It’s a reason they have the pro series for FPS all these years and not Fighting games)
He meant it’s more friendly for a spectator on the technical aspect, which has nothing to do with popularity.
The matches are shorter, everyone sees the same screen, kinda less confusing to understand what’s happening. Of course people who dig halo will prefer watching halo, but for neutral viewer fighting games just happen to be more suitable for crowd view.
Fear of not receiving payments seems to be the only legitimate concern regarding SFIV’s inclusion into the MLG circuit. However, given MLG’s current credibility in running competitive tournaments, I really can’t see how this could ever become an issue. Five years ago? Yes. But, as the “face of mainstream competitive gaming”? I just don’t see it likely.
There have been a number of other repeat concerns. But, none without the basis of absolute ignorance and/or paranoia. Propaganda generated for the sole purpose of fueling their own hatred towards MLG’s proposal.
I understand some people want nothing to do with MLG, and I respect that. But, I wonder how many of you have at least explored their community and events before coming to a conclusion.
MLG isn’t the face of anything but FPS competitive gaming. Just as Evo is more of the face of FG competitive gaming (shared with SBO). And if they still can’t afford to pay off winners from 5 years ago, then how finanically stable can they really be?
There have been repeated concerns, problems that existed 5 years ago, that MLG has yet to address. These concerns aren’t going to disappear until MLG does something about it.
FGC major winner = $2500
MLG major winner = $250000
Tough choice much?
I HATE SFIV with a passion, and if I did ever play it competitively, I want to get as much winnings possible for my torture.
I don’t think MLG gives a damn honestly. FG is such a small niche compared to 15 years ago. It ain’t making or breaking them… especially with Halo Reach coming out.
What’s wrong with you people? How can you even begin to think about this when they still haven’t payed past winners?
So all it comes down to is money paid out by people who have no chance at winning. gotcha. Similarly it isn’t like SF4 major championships for MLG will be given anywhere near that kinda money.
they’re contractually obligated to pay though. If those SC2 winners decide to sue, MLG might go under like every other esports league.
I understand your concern. But, I wouldn’t exactly base MLG’s current financial stability on a five year old incident.
If a company 5 years ago promised you money for work you put in and you rightfully earned that money, by a binding agreement such as a contract, and they didn’t pay you, even now 5 years later, would you go work for that company again?
This shit is like Edison vs Tesla: Edison promised to pay Tesla a shit load of money to work for him, he did the work, Edison fucked him over. They didn’t speak on good terms again.
