Hello, from Arcade-In-A-Box (10% Off Coupon SRK10)

It is a future plan. When toodles has time to work out the converter issue with is code then we are in business. I really don’t feel like hacking two pads, but we’ll see. Over the next month or so.

Ed

Hi, I’m looking to buy a stick, and AIAB looks like a really good choice.

What I need is something to use on PS3 and PC, but I can’t get a PS3 stick because I use 64-bit Vista. The Sixaxis driver that’s out there is 32-bit and therefore won’t work with it. I’m not holding my breath for a driver because Vista 64 requires signed drivers. Even if someone could write a 64-bit driver, I’ve heard that getting a driver signed is very expensive so the hobbyists can’t do it.

So, I’ll need to get a PSX/PS2 stick, and I’m wondering how well it works on the PS3 (provided you have a decent converter-I’m not sure how good mine is). This will probably be strictly for PS3 games, so the input lag on PS2 games won’t be an issue.

Also, I was wondering about the colors. Do you have to get the custom stick to choose different colors for the buttons, stick, and edging? If you get the non-custom, does the color you pick in the form apply to all 3 things?

The PS3 stick should work just fine under 64 bit Vista. The board detects when it is connected to a PC and uses a standard HID interface; the HID drivers used are the ones built into the OS made by MS themselves. If your only concern for using the stick is PS3 and usability on Vista 64, just get the PS3 stick and you’ll be quite fine and not have to have any concerns about lag on either system.

To be totally honest, the board hasn’t been tested on Vista 64 specifically (Unless Ed has tried), but there’s no reason it shouldn’t work. I can tell you with 100% certainty that using it on a PC does not require any drivers except those built into the OS, and that applies for Linux, Windows, and Mac, and I personally have tested it on Win 2k, XP, Vista 32, and Linux.

Not trying to hijack the thread Ed, just wanted to make sure no-one else had the misunderstanding.

Well, I’ve tried to get the Sixaxis and DualShock 3 working, but no go. I’ve done searches and I can’t find anyone else that got it working either. The PC does indeed detect it as a PlayStation 3 controller (in Game Controllers), but the buttons don’t do anything.

I’m sorry, I missed stating an important piece; the PCB inside AiaB’s PS3 stick is NOT a Dualshock 3, SIXAXIS, or any other Sony manufactured or approved device. The board was custom made for Arcade In A Box. The experiences you had with the Sony controllers were because of the way they were designed and programmed, and those issues are not present in AiaB’s sticks.

The AiaB PS3 stick will enumerate as a normal HID game controller with no prompting, fiddling, or praying. Just plug in and go, easy as a USB thumbdrive.

Thanks Toodles, I would have asked you for an answer anyway, so I am glad you jumped in with the technical information.

Drexl,
I have a 30 day money back warranty. Worse case scenario, try it and if it doesn’t work, just send it back for a refund.

Ed

Okay, well, the cost of the PS3 stick is more than I wanted to spend (including getting the Sanwa stick that I really want), but if that would be a lot better I’ll consider it. I wish I could be sure about the compatibility though.

BTW, why are the prices so different for custom PSX and PS3 sticks? I understand the PS3 stick will cost more to make, but a custom version is only $10 more. A custom PSX stick is $40 more than its standard counterpart, making it even more expensive than the PS3 standard.

Oops,
That was actually a typo on my part. Fixed now.

BTW all,
PS3/X360 sticks are now available.

I tried to get the price to $199 but just couldn’t do it. There is much more labor involved in getting the two in one. Not as much as doing 2 sticks, but not far off.

Starting at $219

I don’t understand. They’re not available, but you’re giving a price?

I’d pay $250 for one.

My bad, the not was suppose to be now.

Just a little typo, they are on the site.

Wonderful! I’ll order after I get my first paycheck of the school year… early October.

I noticed your True Arcade layout choices list Curved Wide buttons, but your thumbnail at the bottom of the page is Curved Close. I’m hoping to get the actual Curved Wide you show on other pages.

As for the headset jack, are you able to plug in a second controller instead, attach the headset to that, and communicate?

Jinrai,

The True arcade only comes with the Curved-Wide. With so many different things going on the site, I really need to just sit down and make sure everything is matching up correctly.

I don’t think that headset trick will work. I’ve never tried it though, but I doubt it.

Okay, thanks again for finding a way to make the stick! And I don’t think I’m going to bother with the headset jack anyway… I’ve had quite enough of being called a homosexual person of African descent by 12-year-olds.

Can you answer the question about the colors? Am I right that it’s a choice of a “theme” where the stick, buttons, and edging are the same color, and a deviation in any of those would mean a “custom” for $10 more?

I’ve read much of the thread, and yeah, I’m not surprised Capcom had a problem with the artwork. Even with custom artwork, they probably see that as you being able to get around licensing. They would want you to pay them to license the artwork/characters, and if they allowed you to do custom sticks with their properties, it could affect what they can get in exclusive deals with other companies for “official” gear. It sucks because these are real fans buying these sticks that support Capcom, but oh well.

I’m really leaning towards this (the PS3 stick), but the Vista 64 compatibility is still a concern. I guess I could try it and find out.

Ed, I just want to say thanks for answering all of my emails. My brother and I cant wait to order our sticks from your site…we just need to figure out how we are going to customize them!

Button layout

Hey Ed, I’m thinking of placing an order for a 360 stick. I’ve been using one of the Soul Calibur 4 Hori sticks and one of the buttons is starting to crap out on me.

I really like the button config on this stick though. Which of your options is closest to the SC4 stick: curved-close or curved-wide.

Not to keep badgering you about it  but I realized something. You said your other option was a PSX stick and a converter.

If a converter will work on your PC without a driver, then I 100% guarantee the PS3 stick will work. PSX->USB converters use the exact same HID protocol the PS3 board in the AiaB stick uses.

You are correct. The reason for this is because I order parts in red, black and white in large bulk so it costs me less. All other colors I stock very little, or even order when a customer requests it. That’s the reason for the slight rise in price.

No problem. If you want to see how it would look with particular artwork just let me know and I can slap the artwork in a 3d model and render it for you.

I have never seen a Hori SCIV stick in person, but I would say the close. If you want to measure, the distance from the center of the stick to the center of the first top button is about 2.75". On the wide it’s 3.75"

If you look up the SCIV stick on Amazon, they have an overhead image of it. If you compare this next to Ed’s curved close layout, you can see they match up. Of course, the button assignments are different, but that’s easy to change in the options if need be.

I’ve decided to get the stick, and I’ll go ahead and get the Seimitsu buttons. At first I was going to get the default Happs to keep the cost down a little. However, I think I would probably want to change them at some point anyway (if they even fit, which I’m not sure about), so I’d be better off getting them there from the start.

Thanks for your help.

Question. Not mad/not rushing, but do you notify someone when their sticks get shipped, or when work begins? It’s been about 4 weeks and I’ve heard nothing at all. I know you took a break.
