Hey Ed, don’t throw the templates for the 2P side away just yet… ‘casue I’ll still be wantin’ ya to use it for that stick we discussed.
Arcade-In-A-Box
Hold Your Own!
So far I like that one the best.
Just a little news update on what to come with Arcade-In-A-Box
Looking forward to seeing that new stick design.
Arcade-in-a-Box Smash It Up Contest!
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Arcade_in_a_Box_Smash_It_Up_Video_Contest
Arcade-in-a-Box will be holding a contest and will be giving away a complete Arcade-in-a-Box solo console arcade controller to the winner. More prizes will be added as the contest progresses. New sponsors and prizes will be added to this post including other prizes from Arcade-in-a-Box, Gameroom magazine and more.
For the contest we are asking contestants to enter videos showing them destroying gamepads in the most creative ways possible. We just ask that you be safe, be smart, and don?t injure yourself in the process.
The contest will last about until the end of April, at which time our panel of judges will pick the top 10 videos. Once those videos are selected, there will be a website created where users can vote on their favorite video by DIGGing them. The winners will be determined by the amount of DIGGs each video gets.
We have a youtube group created for you to upload your videos.

We just have a few simple rules.
No nudity
No drug use
Nothing illegal
That?s it, now get out there and Smash up those wussy gamepads ;).
“Two solo stick designs. One for those that like to play with the stick sitting on a table or chair (the current design) and one that will be designed for lap players.”
Crapjacks. I was just about to place an order for the Xbox360 solo. Will this new lap joystick be available soon or do you have an estimated ETA?
I’m waiting on my new CNC router, but I’ll have a prototype to show you all next week.
I will probably start taking orders for them sometime next week.
The top three buttons will be moved to the side. The joystick and play buttons will moved up the stick to allow more wrist room, and I shaved about 1.5" off the overall height of the stick. Maybe a little more, that’s off the top of my head.
Plus no t-molding on the bottom, just on the top control panel. I haven’t decided yet if I will put t-molding on the side edges or not. I probably will.

looks pretty good custom Arcade-In-A-Box. I’m jealous.
I planning other my three projects for modding stick.
good work. I forward to see …I’m undecide…but my project is original send you. That I want… : (
Here are some really rough pictures of the new layout. You can see the box is much shorter, and the buttons and sticks moved up. I also put the buttons a little closer together. Though a little too close between the red and blue buttons. I just need to adjust that a bit.
I didn’t bother adding the holes in the side for this. But they will be there.
I also might increase the size of the box itself to allow more leg room for the lap players. The box meaning the bottom half that the control panel sits on.
The buttons are too far from the stick IMO. Other than that it looks great.
This is the standard Japanese layout (distances in millimeters):

Wow, people like playing with the stick that close to the buttons?
I would say in general Japanese players have smaller hands, so that’s probably a good layout. I’m not sure how it would fair for someone with large hands. I’d love some input on those of you big handed ;).
Also, what kind of effect does it have on playing if the joystick is not as close? I can understand the buttons being too far apart can mess with people’s play, but I’m not sure about the stick. Just curious.
Yea i don’t think it creates any serious gameplay problems. Just that people are used to that layout (people who use japanese sticks that is)
With the distance between stick and buttons I think it’s more about authenticity than anything else really. I have small hands so I don’t mind the Japanese layout at all. But then again the more spacious US layout doesn’t bother me either. For me at least it’s just about what is being used in the arcades, because that is what I’m used too.
I have large hands and the layout/distance from buttons just feels perfect to me.
OK, gotcha. I think I’ll leave it how it is for now unless people really hate it. though it’s the same as it was before on the old design, I didn’t mess with that part.
Thanks for the feedback guys.
Edit:
Well Evil replied before I did :).
Ok, maybe I can move it closer
You should offer multiple options!
Yeah, the problem is I can go crazy with options. With my current layout, I already have
Happ Stick, Happ Buttons, Curved
Happ Stick, Happ Buttons, Straight
Happ Stick, Sanwa Buttons, Curved
Happ Stick, Sanwa Buttons, Straight
JLF, Happ Buttons, Curved
Etc. Etc.
Plus throw in the MK layout.
Then the artwork templates need to all be readjusted for the new layout as well. Man, what am I getting myself into
I need to put some thought into this over the weekend.
I think as far as SRK goes, it would be best to use the official Japanese layout (close stick and buttons) as the standard for your sticks, and make an option to have them further apart as say a second template. The people who like the closeness of the stick and buttons are very picky about the spacing being authentic, but those that want it more spaced out don’t seem to be as picky.
Good idea, thanks.
I can’t wait for the new sticks to go up for sale. I’m very interested in a joystick with an official Japanese layout (measurements).
