Hey guys, I’m planning on buying a 1080p HDTV and need to know what to look for. I am of course going to be using this with my gaming systems for fighting games along with my Taito Type X2 that I’m purchasing for Blazblue. Is there anything specific I’m supposed to be looking for? Please reply. Thanks.
Well I’ve had multiple LCDs and returned multiple LCDs and I can say in my own opinion that Sharp and Samsung are the best. Just look for a low response time and buy one where you can return it if you don’t like it.
If I can recall, 120HZ means the screen refreshes 120x per second. I guess it just all depends on how much money you have, and if you can really tell/care about a refresh rate. I just bought a 60hz LCD (Samsung) and I think the picture is great.
One thing you’ll run into though… anything with standard def might have a bit of lag to it. DDR and Guitar Hero on my PS2 needed to be re-timed to work right. HD gaming like my 360 is great, however.
If the games themselves are only outputting 60 Hz (or frames per second), I don’t think the 120 Hz on the TV will actually make any difference. I could be wrong though! I have no idea what normal television or various movie (disc) formats do.
There’s a very distinct possibility that the 120 Hz trying to manage a 60 Hz signal might add some lag delay which is a big no no no for us. Nobody’s tested this yet, so… either see if the TV can switch back to 60 Hz as needed or better yet, test it out yourself.
120Hz is good because if divided by 60 or 24 (real movies) or 29.97 it give an integer or almost one; so those signals are displayed in a very stable way.
no idea about the lag though, and that true that’s the most important thing to care about if you’re into arcade games or first person shooter. (music games too but you can set an input lag on those for a few years now)
120 mhz should be standard if your gonna cop a LCD today…wait till black friday and get up early and get a big one for cheap. i got a 47 inch LCD 1080p shit is beautiful it has a glass protector on the screen, they tend to make the picture look 20 x better.
none has a game mode and i dont have to use it i get no lag
TV is better then most in the 2 thousand range…bought it a yr ago on a major sale for 1000.
probably can get something better for the same price now at days… i also have a 57 inch dlp for my bed room, shit is godly for for fighting games. you dont always have to go flat DLP’s are great i prefer it when it comes down to personal spaces like a game room or bed room. cause u can buy big and not have to buy some flat shit that cost 3000 in the 50+ range. plus the picture is actually better on most dlps…flat just gets alot of respect cause it saves space well and comes wit a nice ass picture.
Don’t buy a Samsung LCD; they usually lag (even with HD material, and with Game Mode ON). This is because they have built in image-enhancing “post processing” features which cannot be completely disabled.
Also, Samsungs do not allow you to adjust the picture settings (like brightness, contrast, etc.) when you turn the Game Mode on. That means if the image is too sharp or the backlight is too bright, you’ll have a washed out image and nothing you can do to fix it.
Panasonic Plasmas are great for response time–look at the 2008 Viera models (Z85, Z800, Z850). Super cheap and the general consensus on lag is that there is none (at least on HD material, and supposedly they do non-HD material decently, too).
If you’re set on LCD, Sony or Sharp are your best bets. Of course, be prepared for the Sony tax if you go that route.
Since there seems to be alot of people in the know in here (Fubar above), is that tv I linked to above any good for gaming? It is going to be my next purchase as long as its lag free.
lol, where can you read in my post that I’m talking about input lag ?
of course it doesn’t, but it’s not the point.
you can’t deny the response time has something to do with the total time taken the tv to show on screen what you just did with the gamepad or arcade stick.
if you use a wireless controller you add some ms, if your screen panel has a sucky time response it adds some ms.
I’m not a retard man, for a tv, I know the input lag it the time taken between the AV out of your gaming system to the point when the signal is ready to be sent to be displayed on the lcd panel
input lag for an lcd/plasma tv usually includes, data decryption (if HDCP is involved for instance), upscaling(if signal is not at the same resolution that the panel natively is), digital image processing/enhancement (mostly useful to make movies look better), deinterlacing with the use of buffers if the signal is interlaced (and not progressive, like the lcd pannel is) etc etc
the point is that time response can LAG. and that lag (as well as evry other lag that can be added in you setup) is added to your whole eyes-fingers gaming-reaction time, and you really want to avoid that if you play serious fighting games/first person shooters/shmups.
