HDR 3on3 Team Tournament

OK guys, AGX gets credit for this idea which was inspired by this 3S Japanese tournament:

This will be a one night tournament. If it goes well, we?ll have more of these. For now we will start with 8 teams (

**We already have 8 teams so registration for this tournament is now closed. Sorry for those who couldn’t find a team. We’ll have other tournaments like this in the future. **

Date: Friday, June 5th at 11PM EST.

Rules: You must defeat all 3 members of the opposing team. The first team to have all 3 of its members lose has been defeated. One match per encounter, under default settings.

For example, MisterEgoTrip teams up with Str8crazy87 and True_Old_School to create Team ?Old School? and have to play team ?Just For Show?. If MisterEgoTrip goes first and beats me, he keeps playing and gets to try his luck against my remaining teammates. If he beats all of us, his team wins.
you must declare your main character when you register and stick to that choice throughout the tournament. This will force people to give their very best without counter-picking. We all pretty much know who mains what, so it?s tempting to counter-pick and I want to avoid that. Another Rule I’ve decided (thanks to djmassif aka vestax for the suggestion) is no team can carry the same character. If one of your teammates is going with Honda, you have to pick a different character or join another team that doesn’t have Honda picked yet.

Akuma is allowed.

We will use PSN text-chat to communicate. I?m open to suggestions if you have an idea you?d like to contribute. If you are interested, go ahead and register your team.

Credit goes to T3R_Dictator for the following suggestion: we will have 6 man lobbies with the 2 teams for continuity and efficiency, and also for first hand witnesses. And when 2 members of the same team faces each other, 1 player just lets the same team member win until an opposing team player turn comes up, then document the result, and so on.

LOL, well somebody has been giving my team a lot of thought! Hmmmm, I don’t know. I think I’ve seem a team concept for a live tournament before or was this idea inspired from playing the original KOF series? It might be better to give everyone a chance to play to make it fair to all the players participating. Also, it would mean that everyone on the team will have to rely on each other.

Example:
Team 1, A, B, C would be facing Team 2, A, B, C - respectively (A plays A, B plays B, etc.,) Each player plays their 2 out of 3 set with the winner scoring the win for their team. Which ever team successfully wins 2 or 3 will be the winners. So if Team “Fatty” beats Team “Just For Show” in a sweeper then your team is out! Plus it should speed things along quicker, IMO.

I’m just saying, to avoid a scenario like this: If I go first and stay on beast mode, perhaps none of my team mates will ever play! LOL Fun for me, but boring for others on team.

Well you don’t have to go first Ego, you can be sort of the last defense got your back fat bastid :lol:

IDK, I thought it might take long for everyone did 1 on 1 for each team. Plus, we should have a mix up of characters. A team of fatties would an uphill battle for a lot of teams. How about no team can carry the same character? That way, all the mains would be split up.

:rofl: OK. I hear what you’re saying. So do you think it would be best if we flipped a coin or used some random matchmaking system to pair each member against a member of the opposing team? I think if the problem is that one team member might end up beating everyone by himself, then you can just rotate who gets to start first. If you start first in your first team encounter, you play last in the next one. But in the A vs A, B vs B scenario, not everyone gets a shot at playing everyone. Also, under your scenario, if I play my match and win, while both my teammates lose their battles, it would make me feel like my efforts were vain and that maybe the outcome would have been different had I been paired against someone else. With the original setup I’ve suggested, everyone does their best until they lose.

I prefer mustain’s concept. It’s the classic elimination style used in all JP 3-on-3 team tournaments. In match play style, where at least 2/3 plays, the matchups matter too much.

BTW, these are 1-match games so it’s 5 matches at the maximum and 3 minimum. That’s shorter than 6 max, 4 min matches. It may be effortless for the rest of the team if someone’s on a hot streak but that’s OK with me.

Another staple of these tourneys is that you can’t have the same character twice on the same team so yeah, I agree with vestax.

I support the classic elimination style as well. Are you willing to give it a shot Ego? Maybe it’ll work, maybe not, but it’s just one night. We’ll see if it works and go from there.

One more thing; AGX brought up a very good point: what if a team member is unable to make it after his team already registered. The answer is simple: that member forfeits his match. So to use the Fatty team example, if Str8 can’t make it, then the opposing team only has to defeat Ego and Reno to win. This will ensure that only committed people register for this tournament.

This is going to be hard choosing teams, I mean there are a lot of great guys on my list, and others who are not my PSN list (who I play all the time). TheGreatMole and Gidoza started playing again recently, so they might be interested. But naturally, everyone will want to pick the top tier guys on their teams. This reminds me of grade school, where team captains had to choose people… you don’t want to be last hahaha… :rofl:

Mustain, perhaps you can update the first post with a list of players who’ve declared interest, to help them get in contact? Of course, it’s much better if team members actually know/trust one another…
