Even though ST has a much lower resolution, it has more detail. It is simply a matter of opinion to think the style does not match, but it is a fact that it 1) lacks detail and 2) has animation flaws. There is a YT video with the HDR attract mode, which was not included in the final game. Even though it has a much lower resolution, you can see no detail was lost, as it was not there in the first place. For instance, Ryu and Ken’s gis look like they are made from the usual material, while their HDR counterparts wear “plastic clothes.”
The old dive is safe vs some characters, and if you get a knockdown you win
You know, all of this time we’ve been aware of the Sako ticks and o.s. loops, I never once thought the old dive would put you in range for it. I just played with it for all of five minutes, and now understand exactly what you mean. It puts you at the perfect outside range to set one up every time.
Safeness mileage can vary; the HDR dive is generally much safer, so with a throw whiff it wouldn’t have made much sense to include the old one. I definitely see where you’re coming from now, though, so thanks for the head-smack of enlightenment.
Now I want an “O.Hawk” with no whiff and the old dive, and an “N.Hawk” balanced more around everything else
I am thinking about the old dive in hdr, and it might be unsafe vs another character, which is hdr ken.
He could probably fp dp the recovery, or rh hurricane
Fei Long also seems to take off a ton of life for a 5 hit combo. I can’t remember if it started with one hit of the chicken wings, or jumping hard kick, but lands, close hard punch, then rekkas that takes off like 75 to 80% life! All for one jump-in. I played nkj1000 this week and the lag doesn’t help, but that is just one more thing with his changes that adds up to being overpowered and I don’t think it was quite so much in ST.
Also, I played someone’s Claw recently and noticed that he didn’t get dizzy after like 5 or 6 solid hits, mostly roundhouse/fierce level-- in ST that was like his ONE weakness. In ST and probably HDR too, Claw still has no bad matchups. I wonder if Ken’s potential was really tapped fully, esp. with regard to being able to combo more freely with faster spin kick… One day Caucasian(sp) was talkin about how he got so and so with a 12 hit combo and I said I didn’t believe him, show me-- and he got an 11 hit (close enough) on only the second try.
XPRS, have you had a chance to play against hiroyan or or viper yet in japan? how do you do against them with your main, sim?
Both of them usually win pretty decisively, though from time to time I can get a win here and there. At a Versus arcade event, Hiroyan took out my sim and I think he was also there on a day I went to the ranking matches, but I didn’t rank up high enough to get to their level (different set of machines). He’s got a great offensive game and even though sim has some options, can really force the guesses. While Viper pioneered a lot of high level T.Hawk play, Hiroyan’s execution of it is very consistent and once the trap starts, doesn’t mess it up so often. (Some don’t like that aspect of the game, but keeping him out/avoiding the scenario where it’s possible/likely/easier for hawk to get in is still a lot of fun for me.)
Bison is a bad matchup for claw in hdr.
Also I don’t know if you know this, but dizzy drains in super turbo and hdr extremely quickly, you really have to hit them in a short time frame
Fei had stronger combos in super turbo, because he could combo off chicken wing. Rekkas are unchanged.
You should really look at the full changelog, because you compare stuff. I see this with a lot of people talking about hdr, they reference things that are not actually changed
http://www.sirlin.net/articles/sf-hd-remix-complete-change-list.html
There are ST videos of Claw eating a 2-hit Rekkukyaku into normals into Rekkas and not getting dizzied. He is not this dizzy whole people talk about.
No offense taken. I don’t think I’ve reached the potential of Bison just yet. I think part of that is due to the fact that the tourney scene pretty much died as soon as I picked him up, however.
renos over powered, we need to hit him over the head with the nerf hammer.

If anything, Fei’s offense/rushdown took a nerf in HDR while everything else about him really began to shine. His footsies are somewhat better in HDR due to longer Rekka’s (and Super), and surprise anti-air Chicken Wing.
But I mean, other than that, I truly do believe that ST Fei’s rushdown game is just that much more vicious than HDR Fei’s.
Dat fei is sick. Are we going to see it at EVO this year Jiggly? =D
What do you think, Jiggly? UFGT? Season’s Beatings, maybe?
EVERYONE READING THIS: The Tournament of Legends is an awesome event for the SFII community…maybe the biggest ever. If you’ve ever seriously considered attending Evo live, this should definitely push you over the top!
Back to the subject at hand…regarding HDR Blanka’s electricity being faster than ST N.Blanka, I don’t see that it is, both first-hand or in any frame data. Now ST O.Blanka, he recovers with the quickness.
Essentially, everyone has the chance of playing SF2 again this evo, and since most big sharks will already be qualified, you have less risk of being relegated to losers or even getting eliminated just cos of bad luck in brackets. And after all, you can enter 4 tournaments, since there will be 4 last-chance qualifiers, two each day. This is huge. When I had the chance of going to tournaments here, it was for a single tournament with less players that what you will find at EVO.
It may not be a main event, but we all know SF2 will never be main to the new generation with new games being released. Last time HDR was official, Choi faced Daigo and… it did not get streamed. I think this sums it up everything about it. You will have 4 tournaments to play, no need to pay the (expensive) registration fee, and the chance of meeting several other players. Do not miss this.
God I fucking hope so. I have no Xbox and my stick has been ruined for some time. The last major I was in was at Frosty Faustings a year ago. I’ve been thirsting for another one since then. We’ll see what happens : 3
Not trying to hijack this thread but actually, a minor correction: it’s two Last Chance Qualifiers at EVO (with the top two from each qualifier advancing).
I think we’d love to run 4 but there just wouldn’t be time to do it.
But yes, we definitely encourage any ST/HDR/SF2 fans to come out and support ST and ToL. It’s not often that a game gets a “revival” like this. The bigger and more successful this tournament is, the greater the chance we can do this again and keep the scene going strong.
His changes aren’t as bad as Zangief’s, but for me these are my beefs- any one or two of these things may have been fine but all together, enough to add up to not just a “good/competitive” character but “easy” character:
Chicken wing going through fireball (instead of over)
Rekka (and Super) has longer range- in fact, maybe I should put this one first. (btw in ST, his super is probably second best in game after Boxer’s)
Chicken wings easier motion
Juggle flame kick
It could be the lag I come across, that is a possibility. Maybe I’m too used to the chicken wing behaving a certain way from ST. But there’s some magic number of pixels where a rekka in ST wouldn’t quite reach, but in HDR has Fei breaching that shutdown zone way more often. I feel much stronger going up against a Fei Long in classic vs. in HDR in any case. Ryu should be the same basically (I never use the remix fake fireball, not on purpose anyway) and if lag is the issue I should still lose about as much. Maybe we (or another Fei player) can set this up if you get on XBL again, say 10 games in remix, 10 in classic if you like.
Not to put too fine a point on this, but the options characters have are important, because the opponent is thinking, ok what do I have to watch out for, what do I need to do in order to keep safe first and foremost. Take a look at Guile, and then DeeJay for an example. DeeJay has twice the number of special moves; he’s got options. He didn’t have the problem of not enough options. Yet he got a number of improvements to those options, which weren’t too shabby to being with I might add. (Again, the Machine Gun Upper punch canceling projectiles is one of those headscratchers- he didn’t need this and it’s weird.) Guile is a fairly similar character, and has some strong tools but he has the least number of specials in the game. He’s really got to drum up some-- well, guile-- in order to pull off his wins. He’s a decent contender, but not as many options. And what did he get? His upside down kick is now an overhead. That’s all I ever have to remember in practical terms when playing remix: watch out for a new possible overhead. Otherwise I don’t see much difference and in any case, I’m not scared, not any more than I was before. Increased options can lead to increased pressure, and in Fei’s case, particularly from the new ranges he’s able to reach whether by rekka or getting not over but through a fireball to do it. Once he GETS there, his opponent suddenly has a lot more red flags going off.
As for Blanka, the electricity is listed in the change list as faster (3 presses instead of 5). I noticed this when Mithos landed it in some situation that would have been unlikely in ST and it made me wonder, I bet people could start abusing that if they tried. But most Blanka players that I’ve come across on HDR just tend to try brute-forcing Blanka balls across the screen back and forth. Similarly with say, wake up spd’s. I really see a lot of people nailing these in remix, but I doubt their ability to get it so consistently in classic.
XSPR
Oh hey, btw can we try something? I don’t know if Live actually does anything, but the next time you sign on, go into Ranked Weekly and open MyRawGamerScore (or some gamertag like that)'s profile, and go File Complaint, tampering or whatever it is. I came across this and others have too, how he has some consistent way to manipulate the wins i.e., you win all rounds, but he has some way of quitting and somehow getting it recorded as a loss for you, and win for him.
You would really argue that Fei’s super in ST is better than Ryu’s or Vega’s or Chun’s?
That notwithstanding, I don’t think that you appreciate the trade-off that came with HDR Fei’s changes. While the move is more readily performed, you talk as if the move has the same properties as it did in ST. Now, if the CW was comboable AND more easily performed, I’d be right with you in saying that Fei had breached the threshold of Braindead Easy Mode. Hell, if connecting with a CW AUTOMATICALLY juggled grounded opponents, I might understand the claim that the CW is “too good.” As it is, that claim is unfounded.
You play as a shoto, right? Next time a Fei Long does a flying kick and makes contact (hit or block), simply perform a LP DP. Problem solved: If Fei Flame Kicks, DP wins; if Fei tries to throw, DP wins; if Fei blocks/does nothing, you’ve just reset position and pushed Fei back out. The recovery time added to the CW ensure that those are Fei’s options. It’s essentially a guessing game (or “Yomi” if I’m remembering the designer’s choice of words correctly).
Compare this to ST, where Fei can obviously go into a devastating combo if a hit is landed. But, on block, he can go into ticks, baits, throw attempts, or a Flame Kick–all seamlessly without the element of guesswork.
As Jiggly Norris already pointed out, it is easier to get in with Fei in HDR. However, once Fei is in, he’s far less intimidating thanks to his easily punishable LK Flame Kick and the recovery time of the CW. Bison is far more dangerous at close to midrange than Fei but he’s not “easy.” What gives?
As far as the dealing with Rekkas go, your answers (as a shoto clone, at least) are crouching MK and and jump away HK. I can’t pity shotos in the Fei matchup–it’s still in their favor.
I think, as you play more HDR, you’ll see Fei’s not some unstoppable rushdown monster–you just can’t fireball trap him as easily.
And if people are losing due to CW juggle, they deserve it.
I hope that you do get to do a long compare and contrast with Jiggly or Aqua Snake, if he still plays. It’s not all cookies and cream.
Just a minor correction: Ken vs Fei is pretty fair in VST. As for cr.fwd, I wouldn’t trust it, specially offline. You can try it, as you can against Vega and Balrog, but odds are you are getting owned in the end.
I believe VST Fei’s super might be good against Dhalsim, but against most characters, it does not add that much. Even comboing into it does not add that much, since he could do a 3-rekka combo instead, then block super on wake-up, and do similar damage.
