Hawai'i Video Gaming League

Damn I just gave away some of my big CRTs too. :wasted::wasted::wasted:

you should get together a PC CoD4 tourney goin on.

that’d be so wicked hot

Unfortunately short of literally asking Glenn to use his comps to run that tourney, and I really dont want to push that on him. I am happy with what he gave us as hes a hella nice guy. We are only running COD 4 on 360 for now.

When we have the ability you will see some PC tourneys though.

Ah bummer, I’m looking into getting my 32 in Sony Vega fixed. But I dunno when. But thanks anyways.

Yep I believe next month there will be a Halo 3 tourney.

We are working on our schedule still and we ask for our league members, and non-members to just tell us what games you want to play. Its about what you guys want. We do anything we can to accommodate you.

Here is a quick breakdown and advice based on my past evo experiences (b5, 2k2, 2k3, 2k7). I would suggest you find people that are serious about going asap. Talk with them and find out what there plan is. My advice do your tickets asap. It shows to your room mates that your serious about going and will take some stress off who ever is paying for the room. A lot of times new people say " yea im going this year…" or “im for sure next year”… then they flake out. If you think I;m joking look at our old HBB thread for the year 2007 before and after EVO. You will notice some people say they will go and when EVO comes up they don’t. So if you wan’t to be taken serious do your tickets asap when you find out whos really going. Also try to find out what flight everyone is interested in and book the same flight. Its always easier traveling in groups. Below is just a rough breakdown. Also find out what games everyone plays in your room. It helps to room with people that are playing similar games. Finally… make sure you bring an arcade stick.

Tickets: $350-$500
Hotel: $200-$300
Car: $100
Food: $200
Tournament: $50-100
Spending Money: ???
Misc: ???

Tickets: Depending how early you buy your tickets and when you choose to fly out will be the biggest factor of the price you pay. Most online search engines generate similar prices. I have noticed priceline.com did give me a fair that was around $50 cheaper in 2002 and when I used to live in California and would fly home to Hawaii to visit. The only catch with Priceline is to prevent people manipulating there system you need to bid with a credit card #. But if you do your tickets early I think you can get them in around the $400 price.

Hotel: This all depends on who your staying with and how many people are staying. This year EVO is being held at the Tropicana which is about $60 a night and weekends I think its around $100 ish. There?s a thread on srk with the prices so you might want to double check there. For the most part everyone just takes the total and splits it evenly amongst the group. The more people you pack in the cheaper it gets. But a word of caution rooming with a smaller group say 3-4 has its share of advantages also. The chances of the bathroom being available when you want it are good. Comfort and the ability to have a bed or alternate when you sleep on the bed is also a big plus especially the night before the tournament.

Car: Seeing EVO is on the strip this year I doubt you will need to rent a car but last year Nismor did rent a car for a day or 2 so I would say at most $100. My advice take the taxi. Last year Ernest, Nestor and myself took a cab from the airport. The line was very long but due to the abundance in taxi’s our wait was rather short. The taxi fare was around $40-50 + tip if my memory is correct. Divided by 3 people that sure beats renting a car. There is a limit of 5 people that can ride in a taxi car in Vegas. Below is a link with the taxi laws etc.

Food: Another odd variable. Nismor took us to a local Wal-Mart to pick up some things for the room. My advice? just go to the random restaurants, food courts and buffets in Vegas. There not very expensive. If anything pick up a few bottled waters when you can and you?re good to go. Also another smart idea I jacked from Ernest. Buy beef jerky. It don’t mess up your hands, its meat, and its a lot cheaper in Vegas then Hawaii.

Tournament: It all depends on how many games you enter. I know you play CVS2 and I am guessing you might enter SF3, and possibly SF2 HD.

Spending Money: This varies for everyone but my advice… its better to be safe then sorry. Bring a bit extra in case of emergencies. Also have a backup plan in case you lose your wallet or your $ to a stripper. (JK)

Misc: Last year a bunch of Japanese players setup a booth at EVO. They were selling some A list DVDs and a fraction of the cost of what playasia.com sells them for. I spent about $200 on their table picking up the All about ST book, dvd, and sound track along with other various DVDs. This is something you might want to factor in. You might not want to buy anything but I figured I would give you a tip if your curious. I am guessing they will have a table again this year.

Gambling: ???..not sure this is all up to you.

If you got any other questions let me know.

I’m definitely going. I got 3 in my car if Derek is going and I’d say most likely he is going. I got room for one more I guess. If you’re serious about it, you guys better start preparing.

Yeah ill be going to evo, already saving for it.

shoots, thanks for all the info matt. im hoping i get to go this year, im kind of late on the saving but hopefully it works out. if i do go for sure would it be cool if i stay with u guys wang? ill try and get everything figured asap. anyone down for some practice sessions? cvs2, 3s, marvel, etc

Matt - I’d go as far as saying Hawaii players have it even easier these days as far as Evolution. Air fares from Hawaii to Las Vegas are not much more expensive than going to California and if you dig deep enough, you can find some sort of special geared for locals - Panda, Regal Travel, or even Didi Ah Yo if she’s still alive.

2009 Evolution is at the Tropicana so no more spending $1000+ on the room. Tropicana is a short drive from the airport so taxi bill should be less than or around $20 including a tip. There are food courts, 7-11’s, and CVS (the store) within walking distance so cheap food is possible. Matt neglected to mention my Chef Boyardee straight out of the can habit.

The only thing I’d add to Matt’s post is forget the car rental - you won’t need it. Even if you go to Chicken Ranch you can probably find a sympathetic taxi cab driver who’ll drive you there, hang around (hey it’s Chicken Ranch), and drive back for the cost of a rental car and not having to do the driving.

Trying to steer the topic back to HVGL, I think it’s great somebody is stepping up to bring console tournaments into the picture. Remember Evolution is a console tournament so having real Hawai`i console tournaments to play in is a plus. “Console factor” just isn’t a good excuse anymore.

Hey guys you should look into using vacations hawaii. Its about 800 and that includes flight, hotel, 3 meals a day, and airport transportation, so you only need to worry about tourney fees and spending money.

About fine tuning your abilities. I will personally set up at our events an EVO practice center. I will run 3rd strike, CVS 2, and if I can get ahold of it, MVC2 so that we can all practice together on console in the same place. As I am looking to train hard enough to FINALLY go to EVO.

Let me know if this is something you guys want. As It will most likely happen in April.

Yea, I would almost dare to say Vegas is cheaper then California. But your right no excuses on that end. As for Didi Ah Yo, she passed away in 2004.

Chef Boyardee from the can was just to ghetto for me. Sorry even I have my limits when it comes to eating habits. But the Jerky idea was top tier … you dont mess your hands up and you can still play cvs2 without messing up your controller.

100 percent agree on this. Thats why I am really pushing for the HVGL people and for others to give them a chance and support them and get this ball rolling.

Ok so heres what I am gonna do. I will run EVO traning sessions, with tourneys next month. I will give you dates this weekend.

I will have Brawl, 3s, CVS2, And hopefully Golden NZ will hook me up with MVC2, And if you guys dont mind using a pad I will bring my PS3 with tekken DR. So the only one would be SFHD thats the problem.

If you need to borrow a DC with MVC2, I have one that I can bring if I make it to one of the tournaments.

When and where is the next one, btw?

that would would be great ducky. I am going to start the EVO training in April so I’ll let you know bout those. The next tournament is posted in the tournament section. As for the date its this sunday the 16th.

I won’t be heading out to a 3S tourney, but I’ll probably check it out when you start running CVS2.

Well if enough people want it I will hold an CVS2 tourney also.

Let me see here… I have 2 dreamcasts with 2 copies of MvC2, CvS 1 and 2, SF3:DI, and Garou. If i can help out let me know.

Now thats only 2 copies of MvC2 not two copies of everything else lol. Original copies too, no bootleg.

yeah i think the MVC 2 is the only thing I have trouble with. I have a DC with the Original JPN version, its just finding all the pieces to the DC. I would prefer to get a new one with US MVC 2 so that I can always have it ready to go. Like i do with all my other systems.

I see. Well, i have two american dreamcasts with all the parts accordingly and two american versions of the MvC2. So yea. Call me the supplier. As long as its on the weekend i can help out with the tools if you bring your own controller and/or sticks.

All of our tourneys are weekend tourneys. So we will be doing it in April at Netwerx. So ill keep in touch with you as the dates arent set yet.

Ok awesome, and for a little proof or taste, here’s how i do at work…

Yea i love my job, but i hate it too. Kind of boring lol. Just glad they let me get away with this.
