When trying out different fighting games and such, has there ever been one that you just couldn’t figure out / couldn’t improve on no matter how much effort you put into it? I see tons of threads of people getting discouraged off games like UMvC3 and I know folks who have given up fairly quickly because of certain mechanics.
Has that ever happened to you?
Can people have a specific “style” of game? Such as only being able to play 2d and not 3d or only playing Capcom fighters?
Or in theory, should you never be in a situation where you couldn’t get a game because fundamentals should generally remain the same?
Yes, some people are better at certain types of games then others. And it’s not always the type he started off with. I can’t into Blaze, or 3d fighters. But I li
I’ve never been able to play Street Fighter games, mostly because the game feels too limited in terms of movement options. I grew up with 3D fighters, so if a 2D game doesn’t have forward running instead of dash, and air dash, or a roll it just feels clumsy and bad to me.
In the order of which I understand them. (Think tier lists =p)
Games I get: (a.k.a “my game”)
SF2: ST
Games I Mostly “get” (in the order in which I understand them)
SF2: WW, CE, HF, SSF2,
MvC3 (Vanilla)
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 2
Samurai Shodown series
KOF XIII
Games I sorta get but suck at:
MvC2
SF3 3rd strike
Street Fighter 4 series.
Games I just don’t understand:
Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 3
Older KOF games.
Most 3D fighters
So yes, It’s completely normal to have some games you just don’t understand. And while it being in the same “style” as a fighting game you are familiar with helps with you being able to understand it. Sometimes that is not the case (See how high I placed Alpha 2 and how low I placed Alpha 3, Even though they’re the same series!)
Generally you should be able to get around a majority of games better than the layperson. but small differences in game engine/fundamentals/focus can have the ability to really throw you off.
I’m under the opinion that if you work hard enough you can “get”/understand/be good at any game if you put enough work on it. So for the games I put at the bottom of the list. It’s not that I just “can’t” understand them. It’s that after my experimentation. I feel that it’s not worth my while to put so much effort into figuring out a game that’s so drastically “different” that what I’ve already figured out and again “different” is in quotes because, again, it could be similar or just subtle changes that throw you off… can be something from an entirely new mechanic (parrying) or subtle as hitboxes just suck/are better overall in this game. or a combination of things.
I just don’t seem to be compatible with KoF. The rolls, hops, and team mechanics throw me off.
I’m comfortable with a bunch of other games, though. I’m by no means great, or even good at Melty Blood, Marvel, BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, Tekken, but I can wrap my head around their mechanics and design enough to feel I have control over my play.
I feel right at home with Street Fighter IV and ST, though. And Smash, if you all want to count that.
I guess Blazblue. Played it like 30 hrs straight got a ~50% win record. Bought the update, played through the entire story mode did all the trials for Hazama. Played it against a Carl in the cade, about 30 seconds later I was double P’ed on. Now there’s an even newer update and even the combos make no damn sense to me.
Shame cause I like the way the game looks for the most part.
Samurai Spirits IV. I could not understand it then, I do not understand it now.
Guilty Gear. Have not played the game that much either.
SFIV. Really those FADC and Focus attacks and defenses make the game much more confusing.
Most doujin fighters. They all look and play the same to me.
KOF98. All those power bars and dots make the game much more confusing. I do not know when I can perform a DM or SDM.
Also I have big problems in combos.
Garou: same here, I cant cancel into any move at all. too fast reflexes!
KOFXI. Very fast-paced game that I couldn’t get the mechanics down for. I never knew when I could do shift combos or when I could dream cancel (That’s probably due to my small 12 inch tube tv). I also didn’t see the point in having a leader; why can’t everyone do their Leader DM normally?
For me, it’s definitely KOF and Soul Calibur. I dunno, I’ve never really got a hang of those games even though I’ve been playing KOF since '98 and since the first Soul game came out on the Playstation.
