Has the Soul Calibur series fallen from grace?

one thing is that soul calibur broken destiny for the psp was a really good game.

SC4 is trash because they figured out how to take even more moves and techniques away from the game as a whole. The trend started in 3 with bullshit exclusions and changes to movesets. I can’t think of any other fighting game where two revisions later most characters have lost half of their movesets. Until moves/stances/cancels come back to add variety to the game again it won’t be as good as the previous ones.

No amount of system tweaks or continuing to turn it into Tekken with swords or additional armor this or CF that will change it. The series topped out with SC2 console edition.

I’ve heard that the same team that was responsible for Tekken 4 was given the SC reins and it’s been terrible ever since.

I stopped caring after II.

SC = the best

SC2 = the best with a makeover

SC3 = what the hell did you do to the movelist aholes!!!?

SC4 = “The boob still grows” and lets play dressup…what a joke.

The only reason 4 passes at all for me is online play. And even that has its flaws.

The problem with the game is that it has hit a ceiling. There’s no new techniques and mechanics.

Singleplayer is still a disaster. Arcade mode. Standard. Story mode = some long-winded uninteresting tale of blah that I could give a crap about. Another loser wants to find Soul Edge? Please.

Create-a-character is fun, but it’s like the Wii. I’m more interested in the stat part of it, sort of like an Armored Core thing, but it’s obvious the main focus was on aesthetics. Overall, it makes the game very silly when you see half-naked cat girls online wielding huge axes.

Versus is a disappointment. I mean they added an entire new button for tag-team, yet it’s not even here! That’s right, TAG-TEAM IS ONLY FOR SINGLEPLAYER! What the hell. And the only other mode is using items. Other than that, nothing else. But to be fair, I never really ventured out of regular versus in SC2.

Critical Finishes are so rare that I consider it a waste to program it into the game.

Online is laggy. I can spam Astaroth’s 66K all day and win over half my matches. And I don’t even know if it’s dead.

Namco needs to focus and get back to the basics.

STOP giving all the characters new clothes each game. Just give them the same thing, kind of like Doug, Mario, heck Street Fighter. It makes them iconic, more recognizable and it saves you time and energy!

STOP focusing on insane graphics. Now, I know eye-candy is nice, but focus on netcode. I could give a shit about Ivy’s revealing G-string outfit and boobs when it’s lagging like hell.

SCRAP useless modes and throw one that people need. What I’m talking about is adding a helpful learn mode. See you have practice mode, but that doesn’t help. Sure, it tells me the damage a move does, how to do a move and some properties, but it doesn’t tell me the function of a move.

What I mean is that to a new player, Astaroth’s 6K might seem a weak move compared to 1A. But nothing tells you that it’s a move that’s meant to gain initiative in an attack spamfest. Explain WHY you would use certain moves. Seriously, you can add 100 more moves to every character, but you are further moving away from people trying to learn the game. I guess this would apply to the other fighting games as well. SF4 goes into combos a bit in Trial mode, but it could do more.

My opinion is that SC suffers from hitting its prime early. Back when it was fresh, it was a revolution. 8 way run was smooth, graphics nice, etc. But flash forward to today, nothing really was added. I don’t really have a problem with this, but it makes buying another SC game a hard purchase when there’s no need.

Overall, what Namco needs to do is start teaching people how to get better at it and get more people playing. When you throw an absolute noob in a fighting game and expect him to have fun having no idea what to do, it’s a disaster.

Arcade mode only cements moves into players that the AI can’t seem to overcome. Practice modes only show you what you can do, but not when or why.

So once again, trade the overjizzed graphics, slutty designs, glittery finishes, extra cameo characters and doll maker modes for a decent learning mode. Other than that, I can’t really fathom how they will grow SC. The game system is pretty solid the way it is. You could make the moves harder to do, but then you’d end up in SF territory. Yea, other than online play, SC4 has hit a dead end. If you don’t play online, you’d be better off with SC3 or 2.

Some of you guys need to start actually reading what Farpenoodle writes.

I would, But i don’t have 24 hours to myself to sit and read all that. While he does give good points and facts, If i want to read a novel i will go to a book store. One last thing, While his points and facts are good, Its people like him that are turning off new players who never played a SC game. SOME people wont drop 60 bucks on a game when they read reviews that are negative so they wont buy.

Took me less than a minute to read what he said.

SC2 was the best to me. It had a looser more free feel to it. 3 started to feel like tekken to me and 4, although a good attempt, just didn’t cut it for me as well. They just feel more stiff after 2.

Problem is a lot of people who used to play the SC series at tourney level stopped caring during SC3 or before and don’t frequent 8wr.com. Shit, I didn’t even go to the original calibur forums anymore by the time 4 came out. Of course there are more experts there, but how many of them have been with the series long enough to answer the topic well enough?

It’s funny Legend II answered the way he did. I’m assuming that’s Omega, whose name didn’t show up in the scene until SC3.

truth, couldnt agree more.

I like SC4 while a lot of fans didnt. But no matter what, Its one of my favorite 3D fighters ever. I would hope SC hasent fallen from grace. Maybe with SC5 they will fix the things fans didnt like. I didnt have a problem with it at all. By the way, If you havent played SC for the psp i would get it asap. Great game!

When I think about it, I actually played 3 more than I did 4. I think I played 4 for about a month or so, then it started collecting dust.

yes. after the first game.

played SC4 for the first time yesterday with some friends. wtf. yoda pisses me off. first impressions

yoda was always aggravating:tdown:.
