Appreciate it (and I have a lot of respect for you for the info you’ve provided throughout the forum on Viper). And to be honest, if you say it, then it’s probably right lol.
To try and remain as close to the question as possible, I guess I just took a very basic approach to how I viewed characters, in that if I felt a character has some simple practical abilities, such as decent normals and mobility, with the LMHS-Air MMHS (relaunch) Hyper (such as Captain America), then I wouldn’t say they were as hard as people who a found more challenging such as Hsien-Ko, and M.O.D.O.K who may lack some of those attributes I mentioned. Though admittedly, you’d be playing no where near a optimized level with any character if you relied on basic things and didn’t utilized the advanced technology, which is were using a character may become more complex.
On a side note I need to add Hsien-Ko and Magneto to my list of hard characters to use lol
Except Magneto actually has an element of zoning to his game (which is also important for opening people up), and while I hear Wolverine actually requires more effort than we think, Magneto’s mobility will take quite some time to master especially if you don’t have Drones backing you up. The difference between a trijumping retard and FChamp/Fanatiq’s Magneto is huge, and you can tell by the way they move around in neutral game.
im trying to pick up wolvie and i just started on the fight stick and im amazed at justin wongs wolvie. he makes it look so easy :/. i wish i could make wolvies movements as solid as jwong.
Why does everybody say “neutral game” on the marvel forum…? Yeah, no. Also, this thread is stupid. Every character in this game is fraud friendly. >.<
Firebrand has 3f jabs. Spiderman can cancel anything into web zip similar to Zero buster cancels. Modok can stay above super jump height for five (?) marvel seconds.
But since we’re all trying to gain respect by telling everybody we play hard characters, even though our characters are easy to play, I’m just going to say that Zero, Vergil, Dante, Doom, Sentinel, Strider, Strange, Firebrand, Dorm, Ammy, Spider Man, Iron Fist, and Iron Man are all hard to use.
Since I play all of them, that makes me good, right?
Anyways, Shuma-Gorath and Jill are the hardest to play because you have to find them in the DLC section of the XBOX Live Marketplace and pay 5 dollars each just to access them. Everybody else is free compared to them.
No but seriously, Shuma-Gorath is arguably the most difficult character to play in the game, and easily in the top 5. His hit confirms are probably the most difficult in the game, more so than even Iron Man, and charging is extremely difficult to do in a fast-paced game like Marvel. His neutral isn’t really that good either, as he can get thrown out of a good few things he has, and he doesn’t have much that is safe on block. Also, WHO MADE MYSTIC STARE LIKE THIS? On the flipside, he does have high damage combos if you’re willing to put in the time and build a team around him, it’s just that every thing about your play would need to be spot on, you cannot make any mistakes. I have seen ToDs, but it was with pretty bad assist for practical purposes, and it seemed to require such precise timing, why bother when you can just run Doom second and TAC into kills forever. I personally think he has potential to be great, but damn, the execution barrier is so high most people would be turned off right away. I don’t know much about Jill, but I’ve read and heard that she’s very difficult to use as well, so I would be inclined to believe people who have actually purchased her, as I have not.
pick him up and play him in a real match and the reasons why he is hard will be made apparent. I’ve dropped him so many times from different teams but always come back to playing him. The only reason I’ve stuck with him is because I liked him in mvc2 so much, he is fun to play (to me) and I put in a ton of work so I feel its a waste if I dont find a team that works with him (which I have found now).
It isn’t holding back during combos that is hard about playing shuma, because in his combos that is actually the easiest area to be holding back. The problem with holding back, is that it makes you choose between zoning or rush down, as you have to basically pause, dash+downback, or backdash in general to get a long enough charge to stare or ray. Other characters can make this transition so much easier or more effectively; taskmaster, spiderman, magneto, joe, doom, etc… even thor can transition from zoning to rushdown with his tools easier than shuma.
Also, all of shuma’s mystic smashs get grabbed or hit by everyone easily, and for his best “get in tool” it isn’t too great, so you have to use it sparingly and at great risk of a covering assist call getting blown up.
But, the hardest part about playing him, is learning his finicky normals (imo). The difference between dropping a combo and completing it lies many times in the difference of one hit or two hits on his st.M, c.M, and air m’s. Also, with his best and most reliable mystic stare combos, the timing it seems is almost always different, which is funny because they are supposed to be his most “reliable”.
These reasons, among many others, are reasons why I feel the character is hard to play. I honestly dont think he is bad, but out of all the characters I’ve put work into, he took the most work to get even a drop of success. You really, really gotta know the character in and out to be decent with him, and playing him online is pretty much a no go, unless the match is lag free which we all know never happens.

Yeah, and why would I play him in a real match? Your point about zoning doesn’t make any sense at all. Why would a character with a shitty zoning game zone?
His technical requirements are disproportionate to the amount of damage he’s capable of doing. Chun-Li’s jump loops are similarly outrageous, but she sort of gets around this by having relatively easy BnBs that build a meter and do over 700,000 without assists.
Well the Krispy Kreme combo with IM does about 720k and it’s not that hard to do. He does decent damage and with assits, can hit near a million without too much trouble.
the problem he has, in my opinion, is that is mobility sucks. It’s extremely difficult to actually get in and start anything. I think his dash has 11 frames of start up, which is pretty shit. his tri dash is mostly gone since Ultimate. And he is just slow overall.
Let’s not even get started on his launcher. He and Chun-Li are in the same boat, sort of. Chun-Li is too fast for her own good. X-Factor level 1 literally speeds her up to the point where her BnBs become impossible to link. Her air dash is also total crap.
Because he was designed to use both? charging makes this harder than it should be though. Many characters zoning game’s aren’t the best, yet they do it to create space, to lockdown, to advance (ex: mags, joe) or to keepaway in a matchup where they can get away with it. So how does that not make sense? His tools to zone can be used effectively, it is just harder than most to do so.
and you would play him in a real match so that your opinion was based on more experience and knowledge rather than just “I spent sometime in the lab”. I’m by no means trying to say Shuma sucks or is the hardest, I just believe him to be one of the hardest to use. Based on, you know, my experience.
