Hakan Video Thread: Ready for Action!

If she does it meaty (but, not TOO meaty, so that Hakan can’t EX Oil Rocket), I don’t think he can GP (since there’s still a hit box in his knees). At least I couldn’t in training mode a few seconds ago.

And, even if he could, that requires 1 frame timing, with horrible consequences if mistimed (not sure reversal leniency applies for a move like GP).

And, if she just lands and does a BnB, GP gets owned. Very risky.

I don’t know, I’d be very scared to try GP in that situation often.

My apologies if I implied that oiled up oil rocket was 100% garunteed after blocked thunder knuckles and BK’s because obviously it isn’t, especially when taking into account the OR’s start up frames. I should have specified that it was more or less a counter to any follow up ground based attack after a blocked TN/BK. And if Viper does decide to neutral jump or tack on another BK she does run the risk of eating a couple of jumping RH’s or DNC mixups for her troubles. I still believe, when oiled up, Hakan has the edge here.

Which is why I made it a point to emphasize short oil up at full screen as thee best option. Make a quick push once oiled and then hang back for another oil up opportunity.

Not underestimating her at all. Everything you just mentioned is why I would put this as an even matchup as it stands right now. Both characters have lethal vortexs so they both want to avoid getting knocked down as little as possible. While Viper’s offense in SSF4 is second to none her low stamina combined with Hakan’s high damage, high stun, high priority normals, Ultra 2 and DNC options makes it somewhat difficult for a Viper ,even of Flash Metroid’s calibur, to generate any substantial momentum outside of a knockdown IMO. By no means is Viper an easy matchup but at the same time I don’t ever see Hakan as being a free win for Viper either.

slightly off topic: I’d love to see some Hakan players DNC the blocked Seismo SJC loop

The problem is that, while Hakan may technically have an answer to every situation, all his answers are very risky. With each option he has, he stands to lose much more damage than he ever stands to gain. A missed EX oil rocket will cost Hakan about 400 health, around 600 stun, and a knockdown. A successful EX Oil Rocket gives him 240 health, plus a knockdown. Even with Viper’s lower HP taken into consideration, that’s a horrible trade for Hakan in the long run.

Jumping and DNC also carry their own risks of big damage + knockdown.

And, what DNC options are you talking about, anyways? The problem with DNC is that it’s powered by the threat of eating an EX Oil Rocket as Hakan is pressuring you. But, above, I just told you how dangerous Oil Rockets are for Hakan in the long run. So, DNC loses much of it’s allure if the opponent keeps a cool head.

And, don’t forget Viper’s backdash, which is great. Her options aren’t just attack or jump. Backdash messes up a lot of Hakan’s moves.

Plus, Hakan’s normals are very susceptible to EX seismo, because they’re so dang slow. So, even footsies become dangerous. Unfortunately, the only ways for Hakan to combat EX Seismos are all (you guessed it) RISKY.

But, even at full screen, Viper can walk forward a little and EX Seismo Hakan’s massive hitbox if she’s waiting for it. It’s pretty crazy.

The difference is that Viper’s vortexes are SAFE. Hakan’s are not.

Plus, reversal EX Seismo messes up so many of Hakan’s wake-up options.

Hakan is not really a stun central character, unless your opponent guesses wrong like 4 times in a row, or they are fidgety and keep eating fierce punch after fierce punch. I think I’ve stunned an opponent with Hakan like 2 times total since SSF4 was released. Viper stuns people for a living.

Turn the tables: What if Viper’s facing pressure, and tries to EX Seismo, but Hakan just neutral jumps? That’d be some fat damage for such a low health character. The terms “safe” and “high damage” are pretty situational.

Hakan does have safe means of applying pressure: safe jump j.HK off of slide KD, air throw KD, and I think HP Rocket KD and DDT KD as well. The other safe pressure tool is meaty LP slide which is great to counter wake-up backdash.

So while I still don’t think the match-up is Hakan favored, it’s not a complete uphill battle for Hakan.

Side note: I think what really gives Hakan, or any character facing Viper, a decent chance on wake up is that all Viper’s knockdowns via special moves can be teched or not. So even while on the floor, you have some opportunity for mind games. As Hakan, not a single KD can be teched aside from j.MP juggle with no follow-up.

Well I guess “competent” is probably the more appropriate term here. Which is more or less all I’m looking for when trying to get my reps in as I’m working on specific matchups, even if they happen to display the most generic style possible.

As far as the seeminlgy random jumps. As we all know even the most skilled Rufus player will resort to trying to land that jumping double hit RH for the easy Ultra follow up once they realize their dive kick pressure isn’t getting them the desired result. That’s pretty much the rational behind the majority of the random jumpins in this clip.

I find that one of the keys to shutting down or at least containing Rufus is to find a move that counters both his dive kick and jumping RH. In Hakan’s case his jumping RH fits the bill quite nicely.

Thread’s been inactive for awhile so I figured I’d post some new clips.

Round 1 of the E. Honda match shows how quickly the sumo can make up ground on any life lead. As far as the Abel match goes, yes I know I was getting nailed by way too many wheel kicks and I’m well aware that fwd + strong stuffs them clean, was just having one of those days I’m afraid.

Feel free to criticise!

One tip I have for you is:EX Slide is your friend. I don’t know if you were aware of this, but EX slide goes through fireballs clean, so whenever you’re oiled up, a fireball is a free way in on Sim (to be fair, unoiled slide can go through them too but it’s tough to do as well as be safe). I haven’t fought too many sims, but I think more crisco cancelling is probably a good idea too (the idea being to absorb his poke and then get in with something like fw.MP or cr.HP).

To those who haven’t seen this.

Thanks, hi5ive. I’ve been working on that for a long time now. Unfortunately all the stuff I figured out myself has since become well known here but that’s not saying much since most of the community still sleeps on Hakan. I cut 20 minutes of sweet footage down to 10, but I think our youtube was raised to 15 minutes so I’ve got lots of fun stuff to showcase. I’ll try and make you all proud. :stuck_out_tongue:

when does this come out?

i like the instant overhead meaty neutral jump mk

I’m shooting for next week. Maybe after the Adon vid is released.

Haha. Thanks.

Great work man. Been thinking about putting something like this together as a way to showcase some of Hakan’s true potential but I haven’t really found the time. Instant overhead with meaty jumping fwd is something I’ll be incorporating into my game for sure. Definitely be looking forward to the final product.

liltre18: Can’t seem to get the vids to work even with the Nicovideo search. Is there any way you can upload these onto Youtube? Thanks in advance.

A couple more matches for you guys.

I tried uploading one of those to youtube but it seems to have screwed quality quite a bit in processing… Here is the result:

Anything I can do to get better results?

Edit: Nevermind, it looks normal now.

One of top 3 players in Puerto Rico has been helping me with my Hakan, he also went to play the best Dhalsim in PR to help me out:
