To be honest, I’ve stated my thoughts on this before. It’s 100% understandable WHY they did what they did, from a programming standpoint. Now we just need to download a 10kb file when they unlock the characters, and they do’t have to worry about the complexity of people downloading characters and playing against other people who don’t have those characters. There were MANY MANY routes they could have went, and they picked one that bit them in the ass.
By putting the content on the disc, they’ve fully admitted it’s already done, and any extra costs incurred are non-existent, as my buying or not buying the DLC doesn’t prevent me from having the content. Just changes how I use the content, which is a major issue. Them telling us to wait, just seems like a stupid way to reward all these people who dropped money on their game on day one, or even pre-ordered it or got the special edition (that came with gems that may or may not become shitty or pointless or free anyways, and NO access to future DLC).
Then when people brought this issue up, Capcom accused the community of jumping to conclusions, and announces it will set shit straight. And how did they do that? By pretty much coming to the same conclusion we all did. They will charge us money for it, and allow us to access it much later. So we are stuck with a broken game, missing (and MUCH wanted) characters that are on the disc and completed, and already told we will need to spend more money on this game in the near future. At which point we just know shit will become broken again. Never mind the fact that when people DID unlock these characters, they were able to find ways they are broken (ie Megaman’s home planet needs him), thus HELPING CAPCOM.
If they had went the SSFIV route and released a later disc, or massive DLC pack, I would have been upset, and bitched and moaned and started the whole “Rainbow Ultimate Super Champion Edition” joke thing, but it would have been slightly more logical than what they did. People not mad enough at Capcom for this debacle, obviously haven’t been playing their games long enough. I’m no expert on Japanese, but I would hazard a guess that Capcom is Japanese for “Screwjob”
If this were any other form of media, how do you think people would react? If a DVD came with a time locked trailer for a movie you really wanted to see, every fucking one of you would go to Youtube or do whatever crack is necessary, to view it. And now some people did it with a video game. Sure, it’s somewhat of a bitch move for them to use the characters online. But I see where they’re coming from.
