H. P. Lovecraft would be proud - The Shuma-Gorath thread!

Have to disagree with some of this. I feel wolverine is one of shuma’s better match-ups against the top tier. Shuma’s normals nullify slash mixups, and light stare is great against divekick or other incoming. Plus it’s a character shuma doesn’t have to chase, and that’s always a good thing. I wouldn’t put x-23 quite so high up there either, for similar reasons. Doom and Modok deserve to be way more in the ‘not a chance’ category. I mean seriously, freaking Doom? Even xfc3 shuma is like a 2-8 matchup against regular doom.

Really you’re saying Shuma has as hard a time against chun li as he does against Doom, Modok or Dante? That’s just not reality. Nova is a pretty big problem for shuma too. He can literally throw (and therefore kill) Shuma whenever he wants, out of any situation. Chris is also a tough match-up.

Shuma does ok against arthur…should definitely be more in the favor category. Ammy is a big problem for shuma, and I think firebrand should be bumped up a few notches too. I think Thor does quite well against Shuma, and we’ve established Haggar does extremely well against him. Ghost Rider is a tougher match-up than you’re giving credit for too.

believe it or not I’ve been running into a bunch of shuma players on xbl. Like in the last week I’ve had player matches agains no less than 5 different shuma teams, most of them running him point

a shame our connection was so bad, really wanted to see more of your shuma movement/zoning. still upset about that derp lv3 i did. but that’s standard capcom netcode

Ah, didn’t realize that was you. Which team were you using again? Are you in Florida? Cross country connections are always problematic. It’s almost impossible for me to do good shuma combos online even with a good connection :frowning:

yeah, was the FL crap connection with haggar/shuma/firebrand, i.e. TOD/TOD/fraud team.

I played you! although I dropped nearly everything…I dont think I completed one mystic stare combo at all

I have barely touched this game in past couple months and are super rusty but have hopped on to play couple games and ran into at least 2 shuma players, though most were still the same 6 characters over and over.

Wolvie/shuma/akuma is my team if you’ve ever seen me on there.

I run shuma/dormammu/hawkeye and its a fairly new shuma team but I like it best out of all the others I’ve tried. I’m always willing to learn from better shumas, so if anybody wants to play my xbl tag is masuhdunkilyall

yeah I think that’s a really good shuma team. arrows to help him get in, dark hole to get the lockdown mixups, and I bet there are some interesting shuma bnb into raw tag dorm combos.

there are, they are petty impossible online though

Dudes and duddettes’s, I cannot be the only one who no only thinks that shuma is a all rounded character, but can also keep up with keep away characters, am I?

Please Discuss!!

hey guys…just wondering if you guys would be kind enough as to show me the ropes here

definitely not new to the game at all, but ive been watching a lot of shuma vids, and since im in a character crisis, i figure i give him a shot
im a HUGE fan of pure damage (which is why i main spencer/task shell)
i also love the fact that shuma can raw tag into spencer so i can get even more damage

my questions are…where do i start with this guy? lol…his normals are good, but funky…like how do i approach? mixups? big damage combos? raw tag combos?
ideally, i would run shuma(ray)/spencer(diagonal grapple)/Tasky(arrows)…any advice would surely be taken…im totally soul searching for my third character and would love to rep shuma and his solid high/low/grab game

Well, judging from the order and assists your picking, I would say that the team setup works well, with taskmaster arrows and mystic smash approach, Shumas air M is fantastic for crossups and if you can keep up with what side Shuma is one, follow up with an air L or M mystic smash so you can start a combo.

Shumas damages does come from his longer combos and to a certain degree metre use, since for my Shuma combos I am able to stick two Hyper Mystic Rays in there and that racks up the damage, although it is possible to do around 800K damage with Shuma solo, plus the beauty of Shumas BnB is that its very easy to mixup your resets, for example, crouching L,M,H, Air M, Air H, L mystic smash, M, crouching H, Air M, Air H, L mystic smash, anywhere between there is easy to start a reset.

I cannot really tell you anything regaurding Spencer or TaskMaster cause I don’t really touch those guys, but hopefully I helped out in some way shape or form.

shuma is all about carrying your opponent to the corner, so I’d see if you can use horizontal grapple to extend his combos to do so.

I’d say start by forming good habits - don’t fall back on air mystic smashing all the time, stay on the ground, plink dash under cover of arrows, get in range for cr. M, cr. H (great anti-air), and st. or cr. L into command throw. Keep L mystic stare charged while you’re doing all that too.

Your goal will be to stay in your opponents face at all times and open them up via cr. L or M, command throw, or tk L mystic smash. If they’re stuck blocking arrows and you’re able to get in range, tk L smash all day.

You have to be very patient, especially against characters like Doom that will stay in the area of the screen shuma and his assists can’t reach.
ground mystic smash H is actually very good for getting in and less risky than air. mystic smash M, it just has some start-up time that you need to protect with arrows.

also guys this is kinda stupid but shuma on point vs. Hulk at the start of round, unless he has Haggar assist you should mash back + H. Hulk players will always go for mash H plus assist, so if you keep mashing back + H you will either throw him first or you will break his throw (a few times in rapid succession) and then your multi-hitting back + H normal will come out which will stop Hulk’s armored H punch and usually happy birthday him and the assist he called (usually Sent).

Would you not try to jump back at any time? are Shumas and Hulks grab range about the same?

Hulk has a faster walk speed than Shuma so odds are he’ll be in your face at the start of the round, and Shuma holding back and mashing H beats an aggressive Hulk doing the same. If you jump you just open yourself up to potentially getting airgrabbed and killed or hit by H and killed.

Well honestly You can always just mash back dash and avoid whatever ur opponent tries to do at start of match.

12 frame startup before invincibility if i recall, so no you cannot
