H. P. Lovecraft would be proud - The Shuma-Gorath thread!

I’ve recently been trying many different combos midscreen for shuma and still cant find/come up with one that i would consider his most “reliable”. By reliable, i mean easiest to pull off online with the most consistency, or for lack of a better term, his midscreen “BnB”. What would you guys suggest i try? I’m posting this in the combos thread as well

Can anyone consistently do Shuma’s basic bnb in the UMVC3 guide?
Seriously, the expect you to do a TK smash M while holding a charge for mystic stare and to top it off, half the time the opponent falls through the combo :P.

What is the guide combo?
Also, I’m making a channel for shuma related stuff for the future including combos, resets, and “technology.” I won’t be really adding anything until I get a capture device. Stay tuned though. Here’s something that a lot of shuma players seem to still not know about. It still needs to be dabbled with but is really nice for avoiding certain mixups in the corner.

I had a slow day at work and made up a list of what I would do for a Shuma guide video. Its a shame I don’t have a capture device I think it would be nice to have a video guide for how to pick up shuma, some of his different types of combos what normals, cool mixups and special tools for shuma. I wish dazzlers weren’t so dam expensive.

snadmonkey how consistent are you at getting the fatal claw loop off mystic ray assist?

Offline its about 60-40 online more like 30-70. Sometimes the character’s end up in side of the X not the top thought mostly its my execution errors.

How has this not been posted here yet?

edit: I know it’s in the video thread, but this needs to be seen by every Shuma player.

why? it’s a completely impractical, corner only, two assist-dependent combo

shuma’s whole design is just nonsensical. I mean, why is mystic ray assist OTG if it comes out too slow to actually OTG anything? Is there any other assist in the game where this is the case?

Those are the two biggest freakin mysteries to me…that and why you can only mash chaos dimension in one circumstance. It really just boggles my mind. Were there like top tier shumas working at capcom that were bodying every wesker, doom, and spencer or something?

It’s only impractical when he gets up to the Nemesis assist, everything before that is simple. And even when he gets to that point, he can finish with a really easy Jam session assist ender.

F the whole trenchcoat brigade. Honestly they aren’t overly power but god i just get tired of fighting them every single match. The downside to online communities for fighting games is that people see who is viewed as top or close to top tier and only use them. Sure they will claim they would pick dante anyways but we all know they are at least subconsciously influenced to pick them. For instance I played maybe 20 matches or so today online and every single person had wesker on their team, thats not just by chance.

That being said that shuma combo is very impractical, first off the starter is impartical and that actually makes a huge difference. Also let me just say that if you are able to do a triple stare combo in a real match than you get a golfclap from me, but i’m going to shake my head the 9 out of 10 times you drop it during matches. Also no practical combo ever uses two assist or requires to start with a specific normal or can’t be hit confirmed. If a combo isn’t practical or reliable in match situation you really shouldn’t consider it worth leaning.

But Dante’s is Shuma’s BFF!

Well the assist just does the move, hell Dr. Doom will grab the opponent if they are close enough and you alpha counter into him with missiles as the motion is 4H. Honestly I just wish shuma had a legit way to fight projectiles. Fuck everything about the hawkeye matchup.

Also I have noticed this too what is the thing that determines when you can mash? I always thought it was some sort of timing issue and I just fucked up.

You can only mash if you grab them while standing on the ground

this kills launcher combos, mystic smash grabs, grabbing incoming opponent, etc. it’s fucking stupid. grabbing incoming opponent was already a nerf because you’re sacrificing the bite damage

Yes the assists are situational but the Triple stare combo is worth learning. I’m serious. For 2 meter you’re doing a million with Shuma alone.

I just wish Shuma had an 8-way air dash. Could you imagine the high/lows with his 4 frame jumping light? He’d also have those 6 frame jumping medium cross ups too. I’m serious when I say that you only need to give/fix one or two things about Shuma to make him viable.

Why bother giving a character these kind of great tools like combo-able command grabs, two instant overheads, amaaaaaaaazing lows, and good priority when he has almost no variety in approach or mobility to even utilize them effectively? It honestly makes me mad.

Just a little personal preference, I wish Mystic Ray was a DP input. Then he wouldn’t have to stop his entire offense, wait a full second, then wait another half second to launch it. He could back off and start zoning instantly. You can’t keepaway war with it because of how slow it is on start up already, so what’s the big deal with having that option available immediately? Did the Capcom balance team really think that easily accessible mystic ray would be broken or something? Each hit only does 6k of chip, and it only hits once or twice fullscreen. The charge input seriously f###s up so many chances to zone correctly.

changing the input of mystic ray, giving shuma an 8 way air dash (or making his current air dash much, much faster with less floatiness) and increasing the hitbox of air mystic smashes (or all mystic smashes in general) would easily make him a great character. maybe not top tier, but much better than where he’s at. Some of the design decisions they made with him seem completely halfassed and not tested well, which would explain some of the buffs they gave him in ultimate…he needed those things to even be a playable character

needs a double jump more than 8 way dash. he already has decent mix up options, his problem is getting in

-Complaining about what Shuma should’ve had will not give us anything useful, instead of that, we should be training hard with him, so, we can succeed in battle as Shumas. In my case, i’m working right now to find a team with Shuma on point, because, i wanna be knowd for that, since right now, i use him as an anchor, mainly because he’s the one who gives me wins when everything went wrong and Shuma isn’t a bad anchor, after all, he moves so fast and can kill anyone easily, since the way he can mixup is so good, that most people tends to open his guard in the end, if not, that’s where devitalization comes in play.

Just like P.Gorath said, Shuma has trouble approaching, vs a camping team, it’s a very hard task to do, since Shuma was not made to win camping battles, he can survive at least, but yeah, he need something that helps him while approaching, in my case, i don’t have that, Ammy can give me mixup time and Dorm can cover some space between my enemies and protect me from projectiles with dark hole, but that isn’t enough.

What i noticed is that the one who can really help Shuma is Dr.Strange, almost all of his assist can help him in any way, mostly the bolts, since if they hit a grounded enemy, they will stagger them, with this, you can approach in a safe way and get a combo after that, if the enemy just crouches, that will benefit us even more, because a Air M Mystic smash will hit them, or we can use devitalization while they’re there, aside from that, what really interested me is the fact that if Strange connect an impact palm against a standing enemy, instead of doing a combo with him, we can hardtag to Shuma and start doing our million combo and kill easily, so, it’s just a matter of getting an opening with Strange, but since he has teleports, with a lockdown assist, this can’t be something hard to do, with this strategy, we can win many battles that we usually can’t, honestly, i’m thinking of changing Dorm for Strange and try this stuff out.

Shuma is a weird character, not many chars can go along with him, so, it’s kinda hard to find a team that works, while Shuma can shine as the lead character, i don’t know what you guys think about all this…-
