Guy vs Honda matchup

Can someone tell me how this match should be played? Among the charge characters, I feel Honda has some of the best defensive options to keep Guy out. Would you say the goal is to try and get a KD so that you can make him use up his meter upon wakeup?

I found a simple setup for beating most of his wakeup reversals:
run slide > forward dash > back dash > cr. MP

The only thing it does not beat is reversal LP headbutt. I don’t know how useful this can be.

Hmm, stay outside of MP Headbutt range. From that range, use cr.MP to whiff punish LP Headbutt and all jump ins. EX Hozanto punishes MP Headbutt but I wouldn’t recommend using every single time unless you need to acquire a lead. HP Headbutt can be punished with Run~Slide. Just work on getting a meter at the start of the round. Honda’s only gap closer is HP Headbutt and HK/EX Sumo Splash which you can FA2. Once you get a knockdown, the match snowballs in Guy’s favor. Honda can be safejumped to death. Just keep your block strings tight to make the opponent lose his charge on block. Or you can just jump forward or even block to bait his EX Headbutt. It all depends if you can get a grasp on what the Honda player is most likely to do next.

That setup you mentioned is good if you KNOW for sure that they will do anything but LP headbutt. Aside from that I would just say to play more conservative until you get the meter or wait for Honda to make a mistake. Any lost health from Guy swings the round more toward Honda’s favor because once he has a substantial lead, it makes the match exponentially harder than what it needs to be.

Limited Vortex (corner only)

Target Combo into Run Slide, FADC into Back Dash, Forward Jump with these options… Cross Up Mk which is Safe if you hold back to block, Elbow Drop which is Safe if hold back to block, Empty Jump which can be safe, Uncrouchable Low Bushin Flip which is Unsafe and or Wall Jump which can be safe with the right timing. As far as my testing goes Honda cannot dash out of the corner but can Focus if Guy goes for a cross up or empty jump attemp. Hondas Normals dont seem to effect this setup, although Hondas Sumo Smash can be tricky to block because he has different versions that force you to block certain ways. Guys Cross Up Mk and Elbow Drop is Safe from Hondas Ex Headbutt and Ex Command Grab on wake up which alone can make this setup valuble. Also make sure Hondas back is touching or close to the wall after the Run Slide knock down to make sure the vortex works properly. The best time to use Guys Vortex is to maybe help close out a game or a much needed round, sense it takes two bars of meter at a minimal to use.

LP Headbutt, will get beaten by the cr.mk for a HKD
EX HB beats you clean

ALL Buttslams will cause the OS to come out
LP ButtSlam - but if you input the HK at the right time (aka autopilot), it’ll cause the slam portion to whiff and Guy will do st.mp Runslde
MP Buttslam - HK will beat the slam portion.
HP ButtSlam- OS will come out, sthk will whiff but you punish with st.mp and runslide will comeout
EX buttslam - will beat this as HK will trade.

Found an interesting combo: Jump in Hk or Neutral Jump Hp then close stHk, crMk.

Btw LK tatsu will beat all normal headbutts due to its mid invincibility.

This! I shared this with Marq and he said it’s the best anti-Honda and generally the best Guy tech he’s seen in recent times. He can usually beat Mike Ross but Hoodaman would abuse with safe headbutt chip during footsies all day. Still probably Guy’s worst matchup but this makes it much more manageable.

I remember putting it somewhere on here previously but forgot to put in this thread, To be honest Honda’s heatbutt isn’t as OP as one should think, it’ll lose to an assortment of Guy’s normals. So hit the training mode and practice all those as well :slight_smile:

honestly guy’s hurricanes get slept on a lot. with the right reads… they can blow up a lot of stuff. their only downside is you have to commit to them. outside of like… evil ryu… anyone with cr. forward xx fireball has to think twice about doing it on block because of forward hurricane.

Yeah from the right distance I have found cr. LP and cr. MP to be effective, but they obviously lack any invincibility and the timing will be dependent on spacing. LK tatsu having a slow as molasses startup is actually helpful in this situation. It almost feels tailor made as an anti-headbutt on reaction move. Shame it’s not use for much else apart from building meter. Although now I think of it, would it work on stuff like Ken’s step kick and Adon’s roundhouse? Not sure on their hit box properties.

Ryu’s is a true block string from his cr. MK ankle distance or closer. It’s only if he pokes you with his foot that it isn’t. And I think Akuma’s is from point blank. But yes, Evil Ryu’s is true even from max poke range. Sucks to be Ken!

Hmm I think that’s another UltraChen commentary fail then. I really shouldn’t listen to what they say without testing it out myself first. I’ve never even picked Evil Ryu in the lab…so what do I know? lol

LK tatsu against Honda headbutts…why’s this so useful exactly? Do you guys mean as an OS? Damage is pretty poor too…someone elaborate.

Honda can’t hit you at all with LK tatsu. Sure you’ll do 2 hits and only 80 damage as opposed to 3 for 120, but if you don’t have meter to do 120 with EX hozanto and if he didn’t do Heavy HB you can’t punish with Runslide for 110. It’s basically a go to option for normal headbutts for a small bit of damage. You can time HK or MK tatsu if you want but you won’t have the invincibility backing you. It cant be done as an OS as Honda will hit you due to having a bigger hitbox on his startup. But you can’t say Hondas won’t attempt do safe chip, The only time you’ll have to time whatever you want to do if you dont have Meter for EX tatsu is EX headbutt.
