if guy is as OP as i keep hearing… i’m very ok with this. i don’t think he’s blatantly OP like a character like cammy is. i think he’s more OP along the lines of he’s very strong when played correctly. similar to how C-guile was extremely good in cvs2 when played right, but you still didn’t see him everywhere.
if they keep him as strong as he currently is… i’d love to see him in more majors being used by some high profile players. it’s about time guy received his due. he hasn’t been particularly strong since A1. A3 is arguable… he was good… but outclassed by v-ism.
So 5 location test has been announced in Europe, I 'm hoping someone from SRK will attend and demonstrate Guy’s changes more clearly. 1. Who does Guy’s walk speed closely resemble? 2. How well does Target Combo work? (best to test this on a crouching Sakura) 3. Can a meaty Elbow Drop beat low profile moves such as Ryu’s crouching Mk? 4. Does Target Combo cancelled into Red Focus, Ultra 1 or 2 combo work and how is the damage? 5. Is Double Ultra damage good? 6. Any other notes…
TC into Red Focus does indeed work, Whatever normal focus works on, Red Focus will as well. His walkspeed got a 10% increase, so he’s close to Ryu or a little past him,.
More to the point is that current Guy players may stand a chance of becoming ‘high profile’ by actually winning with him. Look at Alioune’s tier list on EventHubs from the other day. How many ‘high profile’ players can you name that use any of the characters towards the bottom of that list? None…because none of them ever place high enough in tournaments to become recognised. ‘High profile’ players are generally just top tier whores, and I would prefer if Guy wasn’t their new pimp! But if people who have been using Guy for years start placing higher instead of losing out to your everyday Akumas, Cammys, etc. then that is definitely a shift I would like to see. Having said that, if any high profile player were to pick up and main Guy, I would like it to be Xian. His dedication to mastering a character, learning a huge number of setups, character specific tech etc. would do a lot of justice to the Guy community.
Interesting. I doubt there’s gonna be a “Guy” bandwagon, especially with 5 new characters entering the game. Most likely, people will be looking towards those, the twins and then possibly the mid to low tier characters of the current version. Even then, I think Guy has too much character specific stuff to learn and it’d take some dedication to become fearsome with him. Nonetheless, I too would like to see someone like Xian pick him up and beat the Japanese and American notables.
i considered that too. people that’ve been using guy for years possibly doing better in tournaments and becoming “high profile” players. i agree that xian would be a great player to pick him up. watching his academy videos… he really learns a character in and out. and i respect that he shows how to blow up his own gen setups. i’d rather outright beat some one on an even playing field, than win because they’re unfamiliar with my character. although it can also be said that it’s the opponents fault for not learning the matchup. regardless… i’d like to see what xian could come up with if he were to pick up guy.
if guy were to become some where in the upper tiers… i really wouldn’t mind if he got whored out a bit. it’s always nice to see a guy on stream in majors no matter who’s playing him. not sure if many top players would gravitate toward him though. he’s always been a “skill” character(except for maybe A1). wins with him have never been braindead… you’ve always had to work for the wins and i think it’ll always be that way no matter how good he gets. he just doesn’t have anything to autopilot with like a rufus dive kick for example. his hits are earned rather than just “good luck blocking this because you got knocked down” non sense.
if he stays as good as what’s been said though… it’ll be interesting once ultra drops that’s for sure. and i’m interested in seeing where stands against the new characters.
Id just like to say because A1 was mentioned. Please someone beat me with guy in that game. He is not even the best in the game ken and akuma are. I think people are really confused about how that game is played at high level.
not saying he’s the best. he’s just arguably better in that game than he is in other games he’s been in. he isn’t as difficult to use as he is in say a2 or a3. again, not saying there isn’t some skill involved in using him. just in comparison to something like a2… winning with him is more work than in a1. like i said… in any game he’s ever been in… he’s never had anything he can autopilot or abuse. so no matter how good he gets… i can’t see him being OP.
in regards to ultra, i can see him becoming strong… but you’d have to intentionally give him something dumb to break him.
Yeah I totally agree with this. His normals and move set have more or less been pretty consistent across all games. His character design is solid, but he just lacks that certain something to make him high tier. I’m kinda glad he doesn’t have a vortex or FADCable reversal in SF4, which are pretty much the hallmarks of the top tier characters - and I’m glad they nerfed the broken damage on bushin flip grab that he used to have. I still receive an outrageous amount of hate messages after bodying people though. I can understand if people get sick of being Ibuki kunai vortexed game after game, but Guy? I often feel like only other Guy players understand the effort we have to put in to win sometimes. He is far from a braindead autopilot character. He’s just thoroughly misunderstood by a lot of players, who then feel the need to vent the aggression of their own self-hatred at their lack of matchup knowledge.
People who vent usually don’t know the match-up and don’t understand that Guy is a heavy punish character. I would say that’s the only “top tier” trait Guy has and ever will have cos of his design. Of course he falls short when you’re talking about Ultra punishes - but normal combos, he’s up there.
Also, didn’t they nerf the flip grab damage by like 20? Hardly makes a difference anyway since it only used to work in the first year of Guy’s inception.
But yeah, there’s a lot of shit in this game and people still think it’s worthwhile complaining about Guy. It particularly irritates me when those people play Akuma/Seth/Cammy.
