In this case, i think they could have likely prevented this situation, especially after they became aware of his youtube videos (the ones that were taken down). I think they just assumed their son was weird, not a mass murdering piece of shit. In the reality i live in, what i listed above, would have been my immediate actions following finding out about his youtube videos, especially considering his antisocial behavior in general. I mean to start, i wouldnt have sucked that much as a dad, and i would hope i didnt have children with such a weak shit head mother to my children also. A lot of kids dont need a ton of parent overseeing at all, but he did, and judging from the parts of the manifesto i read, they couldnt have been oblivious to their son likely needing a bit more attention and care then other kids.
Im sure it can be hard to assume the worst about your son, especially when your lives are so normal/good/great, and your daughter is just fine. But sometimes you have to assume the worst, and attack that problem with all your heart and soul. No one ever hears of mass murderers who were handsome jocks, with a free ride to college, the hottest girlfriend ever, etc… They are all pretty much exactly like elliot rodgers in some way, if not most ways, with i believe the denver theater guy being an oddball in the mix, but i think some weird things eventually came out about him, i forget.

So the police were involved here, and the parents were aware their son JUST TRIED TO PUSH PEOPLE OFF OF A FUCKING ROOF (short fall or not. still, his intent was to harm people because they were cocky). Doesnt seem anything was done, or anyone wanted to press charges against elliot, likely not wanting to get involved with anything with police while they are in college, and just walk away from this whole situation unscathed.

I watched this nearly 2 hour analysis of Elliot Rodger, which I highly recommend people to watch if they are not interested in reading that 140+ page paper. This guy basically reviews Elliot’s manifesto, highlighting important excerpts from it, and he gives his opinion on what life events most likely shaped Elliot’s psyche to want to do that murder spree in the first place. Yeah, he’s playing armchair psychologist a bit like the rest of us, but I still think he brings a lot of good points:

The problem with preventing incidents like this from happening is that you have to balance out keeping crazies locked up and the dangers of a police state. Sure we could start jailing every white dude who posts narcissistic delusional misogynist racist youtube videos, but that leads to a slippery slope. Nope the sad thing is there are always going to be crazies who may randomly kill you. The probability is very low, and you’re more likely to die in a car crash. The worst thing that would happen is if they used killings like these to justify mass surveillance and other authoritarian measures. They did that after 9/11 with Patriot Act, Gitmo, NDAA, and other bullshit. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to push more legislation as a result of this. A police state is far worse than some random crazy killing you, just take a look at history and how well it worked out for people living under a dictatorship.
edit: Although given how much white privilege there’s been throughout history and how they’ve always been profiling minorities, it’d be awesome and hilarious if they did racial profiling on white people and started throwing them in jail randomly. Kinda like how the police fuck with black and brown people today. Like any time there’s an awkward white kid at a party who looks really angry, they could call the cops on him and get him imprisoned for being a threat.
There’s nothing anyone can do to prevent these things from happening. The only thing I find interesting about this story was how racist this guy was.
I think it could have been prevented. If the police were monitoring his youtube channel more closely, they would have knew what Elliot was planning to do, because he posted his retribution video some time before he committed the act. Also, during the welfare check that the police made, they should have took his parent’s warnings more seriously. I’m pretty sure if they viewed his videos as an attack of terroristic threats, they would have enough justification to search his room to found his killing spree plan, 400 round of pistol ammunition, and the three handguns.

I still don’t get why people are thinking that him “getting laid” would have actually “fixed” him or “saved” anyone. Given his personality, it was less about sex and more about him not getting the attention he felt he was automatically entitled to. Sex was just “supposed” to be the automatic result of him interacting with girls at all apparently from what I’ve gleaned of others reading the manifesto. After all, a lot of you act like there’s no reason to interact with women unless it’s to get laid and society certainly discourages non-sexual hetero-socializing unless you want people to think you’re gay. The only difference is that everyone here–or mostly everyone–can handle the inevitability of rejection.
At best, him getting “laid” would most likely have only just delayed him killing people and maybe therefore lowered the number of victims. Given rejection is inevitable and given this guy couldn’t handle any type of rejection due to what he felt “should” be automatically given to him, he was going to “snap” at some point. This especially if both his parents were essentially emotionally distant or oblivious deadbeats through his entire life.
All the people honestly acting like his lack of “game” was the actual problem here rather than caused by it or a reflection of it that put off others are basically buying into the “virginity is bad” thing that I thought everyone agreed was bullshit earlier. I can’t say I’m surprised that some people still apparently buy into that though.

Anyway, I can see why you would say this and I agree about the socializing aspects to degree, but I don’t think this solution would work, like ever. This not only because of the nature of America but because of the nature of humanity and the amount of humans there currently (unfortunately) are. America has always been too spread out, really. Even growing up it seemed rather obvious that we are less “the United States” and more just basically separate countries that try to call themselves one country just because that’s easier. At best, sections of the country like “The West Coast”, “The Midwest”, “The South”, “The East Coast” and such have things in common, but otherwise…
The recent extreme political polarization has only made it worse, but I don’t see that trend reversing anything soon, if ever. I think another literal Civil War or the country fully/finally imploding would occur first before that happens unfortunately, especially if everyone tried to build “sustainable communities of tight knit people” and had to compete for resources even more.
On a smaller scale, sense of community also keeps getting fractured by the increased production of various technologies that either makes it so that we have to personally physically interact with people less or makes it so that there’s less and less privacy. The latter also wants to make us interact with people less given civilization/society is basically build on always lying to other people, at least by omission. After all no one either wants to hear another’s life story or have even close relations, much less random strangers, know everything there is to know about you, especially if you can’t do it anonymously. Everyone has secrets after all.
That said, I’m quoting this mostly because I’m curious as to what criteria you would have for something being both “sustainable” and “tight knit”. At present, the only type of groups I can think of in America that fit this vaguely are all basically bigoted cults of some kind, whether they’re cult-like on a religious (those polygamous Mormon offshoots, arguably the larger Mormon church itself, etc.) or political (those various militias that are vehemently anti-government, what remains of the KKK, various neo-Nazi groups) level. So there’s that issue as well.
In theory, I’m actually not against your proposal. Then again, in theory, I’m also not against theoretical communism and we’ve seen how massively humans fuck up the ideal of communism when they get a hold of it.
IMO he chose the wrong spot for college. He should have stuck to somewhere more easy going. He was in the wrong scene from the very beginning.
