did people really think we were getting +R? The game was just announced and isn’t even out of location testing, and when was the last time we got a console port of an arcade game without waiting 4-6 months or more after initial arcade release?
And now somehow people are upset that we’re getting AC on modern consoles, the thing people have been demanding for years, just because there will eventually be a new version?
People really want to play the most current version, assuming that it is the best for tourneys because the devs will undoubtedly hone the knife that is this game’s balance into a razor sharp edge. I, personally, wouldn’t mind an AE-esque way to toggle which revision one wants to play. And besides, it shouldn’t be that hard to patch the +R revisions into the downloadable version.
Also, the original Tatsunoko vs. Capcom says hello.
I bet that’s what’ll happen. They’ll probably put out AC+ then offer +R as a free upgrade once the loctesting/initial arcade release is done. +R doesn’t seem like a big enough upgrade to warrant putting it out as a separate disc or PSN/XBL game if they DO end up releasing AC+. And if they’re trying to test the waters for a next-gen installment of the GG series, putting out a new upgrade is an excellent way to drum up interest.
The fact that the arcade game is being released on the Nesica X Live platform means that having timed exclusivity is quite significant; every credit put into the game has a percentage taken by Taito and the game publisher. Unlike previous arcade hardware where the arcade operator would buy or rent the board for a big chunk of change and then recoup it, the games on Nesica X Live are distributed free of charge, though the arcade operator has to pay fees to buy the Nesica X Live boxes and to get the service.
So timed exclusivity in the arcade is highly significant to the publisher/developer, probably even more so than before. If Arcsys released on Nesica X Live and XBL/PSN at the same time with the exact same game, they’d be shooting themselves in the foot.
I tend to think that the TvC scenario was unique because the Wii wasn’t a typical home for fighting games, and the Tatsunoko license had an unusual appeal in that only… 3? of the Tatsunoko properties (Casshan, Karas, Yattaman) had had any significant new material released for them in the past 20+ years. I think that Capcom gambled that older people with Wiis would buy the console release, while younger people who are without Wiis or who don’t want to buy joysticks for the Wii would just play in the arcade. But the game flopped, so who knows what lessons were learned from it.
I’d tend to think that makes it less important. History has proven people aren’t going to stop playing GG in arcades any time soon, and you don’t have to bullshit to sell upgrades to arcade operators if they’re free. (from what I can tell, for an arcade if a game makes more money over 5 years is much less important compared to paying off the purchase cost as quickly as possible to avoid drowning in red ink)
As far as ASW is concerned I don’t know if the extra plays at an arcade from a later console release outweigh the extra sales from an earlier console release.
If you’ve been following the Arcsys website you’ll see that a site redesign occurred in July, along with which came the new set of banners currently hosted up on the site.
Its just like when skull girls was coming out.
People moaned about delays and lack of info, speculated and created poorly substantiated rumors, but eventually it was released with only a minimum of disappointment over missing features.
Be patient guys, probably be a few more months before you can download it, play it a couple of times then retire it.
