A lot of GG’s aesthetic is essentially an ode to a Western cultural phenomenon in metal references. Doesn’t make it less “anime” but it definitely makes it less Japanese, which is important.
To be fair, when people talk about Anime games, don’t they mean more a style of gameplay?
Because there is quite an obvious difference between Guilty Gear gameplay and Third Strike gamplay, and GG is most certainly an ‘Anime’ game.
I mean, SF4 has a character that is literally called Oni. I don’t think anyone is going to deny the Anime influence, but it doesn’t play like an ‘Anime fighter.’
Honestly, it means neither as something can play like Street Fighter and still be labeled as “anime” by an ignorant crowd simply because it isn’t by Capcom or SNK.
There’s multiple definitions (whether they are legit or not, the definitions are used) and then double standards also.
Anime or Animu game for some can refer to any game where the art style is in 2d or cel shaded 2d that tries to make itself look like you are watching an anime. If they see 2d style artwork that is reminiscent of Bleach, Naruto or any other popular anime, it’s an anime game.
It can also refer to any game where the idea is to air dash the hell around since Guilty Gear (an anime game) started this. People noticed that after Guilty Gear, all of these other doujin and general fighting games started coming out where the characters looked like something out of an anime (whether they actually were or not) and having a universal 2 way air dash like GG was standard. So basically if your game has anime style art and the characters have a universal air dash, it will be called anime forever.
Back in the old days…Neo Geo games were the original anime games. Guilty Gear kinda took the throne later on. Back then you had SF2, then around the corner you had these games like Fatal Fury, Samurai Showdown, AoF and KOF that had that familiar anime look for people. Capcom started to
pick it up with Darkstalkers and their Alpha games also, but because it was SF it got a pass from people.
These are definitions based on a hobby or general form of entertainment, meaning nobody cares to utilize concrete definitions etc.
GG is hella anime, it just doesn’t really look like it that much on the outside. That should be enough for some people wary of anime-style games to get interested.
