Guile in Super Street Fighter IV (arcade version)

Well…shit.

This is what made me disappear from arcade scene back in the old days.

Isn’t that exactly what they did? Invite casual players to testing sites, had them play and asked them what nerfs certain characters should get?

If that was the case, who on EARTH thought Sonic Hurricane did too much damage?

Or maybe I’m thinking about Super? Man, I’m getting too old for this.

EDIT: Correction, I recall something about some players mentioning something about Guile’s sonic booms building too much meter too fast. Also some whining about how he’s too safe with the recovery off of his booms, his airthrow being OP and ridiculous.

I blame Daigo and that stupid iplaywinner.com tier chart for SSF4. That chart had Guile way too high in the rankings. Wasn’t he at like #1 or #2? If he’s so good then how come only like 1 person wins tourneys with Guile?

the last few posts have made me sad too

Sorry you feel that way, but I hope we can still see you in tounrnaments even if it means maining a different character. I really enjoy watching your matches, they are much more calculated and precise when compared to many other players.

The nerfed meter build from SB really hurts Guile. He already has trouble with rush-down pressure and fireball wars now it’s even harder. Yes, nuetral jumping can reset the fireball war, but you don’t build meter when jumping (while your opponent does). The bottom line is Capcom wants AE to be offensive-oriented, and guile was one of the best control character in super, so guess who gets all the nerfs.

I’m still sticking with Guile. I’ve been playing him since vanilla. I’ve tried to experiment with other characters, but Guile is the only one that feels right for me. i’ve mean we’ve seen a lot of switching from people in AE, but it hasn’t given them any more success. Sometimes it’s best to stick with who you’ve been using because you have the experience and the mindset to use that character. Honda got the nerf stick pretty bad, but Mike Ross is still doing work with him. He’s definitely no worse than vanilla Guile. I guess we all got spoiled by Super Guile, that we got sloppy and aren’t that sharp anymore. I know my Super Guile played way more stupid than my vanilla Guile did. I looked at some old tournament vids from me playing with vanilla Guile, and man I was so much more on point back then. Then I looked at my replays in Super, and I just play sloppy, totally not as clean as I was playing in vanilla. I enjoy the challenge. I mean if I go to a tournament and get blown up because I’m playing with Guile, then guess what? It’s only like 30 bucks, maybe 70 at evo. Honestly I spend that much on gas money to get to work. Other characters simply aren’t fun to play in this game, and if the character is not interesting, then you lose based on that alone. So I may as well just run Guile because at least i like the character, I have experience with him, and I know most of his matchups.

All the American Heroes are dead or dying. The question isnt How much worse Guile is in AE, we know that is a lot.
The question we all should ask ourself is:
How much worse(or better) am I after giving up 1-2 years of feeling a character and experiencing his matchups to move to someone new.
I have no Idea, I have yet to even touch AE. I just dont like all the feelings of hopelessness.

I don’t play Guile, but damn. Dieminion’s posts have bummed me the fuck out. I hope we’ll at least still get to see alot more of you in tournaments Dieminion, you’re one of the most fascinating players to watch.

The same guy who thought his FK’s did too much damage…:stuck_out_tongue:

I respect die’s opinions, but I’m sticking with Guile all the way. I recently placed 3rd with him in a tournament a few weeks back (super edition, got sent to losers and I fought almost every single one of Guile’s bad match-ups just to place) and since then (partly because of his nerfs in AE and partly because of my post-tournament adrenaline rush) I’m playing Guile properly now - even if it is because I’m forced to (make 1 mistake and you’re dead as shit), I actually enjoy it cus it feels like I’m actually improving.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate the fact that he got more nerfs in AE than he got buffs in super (and also more nerfs than anyone!), but I’ma champ him all the way.

Also, just for the lulz and to cheer everyone up, I got a message from someone saying Guile was OP in AE after I beat him…XD

Im dont do tourneys, but I cant say I dont see what they are saying, I mean the Twins, Viper, Ken, Gat and Akuma are all pretty popular and they dont want to put themselves in a bad matchup vs a good player deep in a big tourney. So be a Hero and die trying?..or look for a way out is how they see it.

i dunno why, but i kinda feel that akuma is easier than ever before. don’t get me wrong, i’m not talking about at the level dieminion is talking about. i just mean at a non scrubby, online level.

he was “too good” because only 4/5 american players used him in tournaments, and they all happened to be above average…kinda like how the only 2 gen’s in the world are also good. then you have the best player in the world saying “he’s really good now” and using him as a backup option (but never took him on completely as his main because he wasn’t so good that it was only worth playing as guile). then you had the i.p.w guys making tier lists after the game was out about 4 days, showing huge match up knowledge by saying juri beat guile.

i remember saying on this very forum about 9 months ago “he’ll be nerfed because he beats ryu and ken for free”, and unfortunately i was right. ultimately it’s the online shoto scrub who dictates certain aspects of the game as they are the one’s who put the money in capcom’s pockets. that’s why we have two new mugen shoto’s over rolento and urien, and ken in the high tiers.

they nerfed guile just like they nerfed dhalsim and honda. they want this game to be attacking. perhaps the balance testers at capcom decided to pander to the 3rd strike fanboys? it kinda feels like it to me.

it’s not that i have a problem with the idea of this game being more attacking. i encourage it. i’d even argue that the nerfs would’ve been acceptable if they’d given him a buff that was actually a real buff. a safe(ish) offensive mixup like an unthrowable u.d.k would’ve encouraged attacking pressure and would’ve made guile fun to use. or how about fix the fucking flash kick already?

Game is dumb, but in this brainless game I’ll look better losing with Guile than winning with anyone else. But I believe it when they say that Guile is shit compared to other characters in this game and he should be dropped if you wanna be competitive.

The fact that I’m sticking with Guile and playing “favorites over logic” is just further proof that I’m not all that competitive, but he’ll still be fun for me. Winning is fun too but oh well.

I’m competitive, very much so. I get really salty when I lose, and I love to win. However there are some ways to play the games that are foreign to me. After playing MVC3, I realized that I’m just not good at hitting buttons. I won’t attack unless I know I’m going to hit someone. With that said, I could very well pick up Yun, but I’m just no good at staying in someones face pounding away at buttons. Maybe that’s the way the game has to be played, but I’m just too lame to play that way. I already went through the character crisis in vanilla, constantly wanting to drop Guile for someone else. Every time I sit down at a tournament, I knew I could have picked Balrog, Cammy, or someone else. I always picked Guile and just bared with it. Kind of sucks, maybe I’m a masochist. But at heart I’m just a lame ass turtling player, and I’m not the type of guy who just hit buttons. So fuck it, I’m just going to take my lumps. I

did you link this to make sure we troll you?

Yea you dont like to “commit” to the button unless you know its safe or worth pushing it. I am sure a lot of Guile players feel like that. I do. I bet over half of us have the same “non-committal” personalities, which is why it almost emotionally hurts for those who finally did actually fully commit to playing Guile.

Branh, you’re preaching my mind right now. Never realized we shared such similar outlooks on shit.
