… this has been my problem with the game engine since vanilla. Guile has been basically an SF2 character living in an SF4 world. Everytime I get hit by one of the many no-meter or FADC necessary combos into Ultra that almost everybody (well, except maybe Fei Long?) else in the game has, I can’t help but reflect about how unfair that sh*t is (plenty of time to do this too, seeing how long some of the Ultra animations are :). It makes me want to seriously punch everyone who comments on how easy Guile is to pick up and use, how much he turtles, so on and so forth. They have no clue at all how hard it is to use him. And Capcom straight catered to these bastards in AE.
So… anyone heard a release date for SFxTekken yet? lol
It is disheartening, the way things are looking. Hopefully even as mid-tier, Guile retains his viability in higher level play. I did watch Kyotojin Guile beat KSK’s Abel on youtube in AE and it helped me feel better.
Ya… In AE I have played about 20 or so matches against 5 different Dhalsims and I haven’t won a single one yet. I am at a loss of how to beat sim… it just seems as mathematically impossible as beating Vanilla Sagat. Abel, Viper, Akuma… hell, even Fuerte seem like characters that I can at least apply a strategy too and pull a win… but I have NO idea how to beat Dhalsim anymore. I tried counter-poking limbs, FA’ing projectiles for more U2… but nothing seems solid. In the odd case I get a life lead, he can just scoot in with seemingly unpunishable slides and 50/50 yoga sniper / low attack mixup. OR he can just EX yoga fire… which the only real way to counter is with EX boom to match it… but… yaaaa.
The real question: Will SFxTekken have Guile or Charlie?
Because if it doesn’t then we can forget about it.
On a side note, it’s probably the only possibility of Charlie ever showing up in a Capcom fighting game in the near future. If he doesn’t show up in that he’s probably sealed away in the character vault forever. I’m not a huge fan or anything but I wouldn’t mind a change of pace and still get to throw Sonic Booms. (Seth doesn’t count -_-)
Man, I think Guile would be awesome in the Tekken X Street Fighter version. His moves would transition well since Guile uses a lot of normals. I’d think he’d play a bit like Bryan Fury with more FK’s. I think Charlie would be cool to see in the SF x Tekken instead of Guile so I’m looking forward to that game as well. I’d love to see some more characters show up from different SF games in that one but I’m sure the hype of seeing them modeled would make everyone believe that they’re coming to SSFIV:AE as DLC characters.
I just hope they will give the online player an option if this AE becomes available, fuck the way it looks ill rather stay SUPER.
This is the reason why even in Super I think Guile sucks in a tournament setting. Yea he does great against most characters, but he can randomly lose to rushdown characters like Abel, and TOTALLY gets wrecked by Sim.
The best way to beat Sim is probably to FA1 his fierce and slowly push him into the corner. The whole, “Just keep building meter and turtle him out with ex sonic,” will only work against scrubs. When you finally do get him there you can’t take any chances else he will escape. Also, even though UDK got buffed you can still get grabbed out of it, and trust me, the last thing you want is getting reverse tick grabbed into the corner. Best to stick to overheads and random pokes for your main source of damage. Flip champ said Guile vs Sim is even and I think he’s full of it!
Slinkun
Against predictable slide-happy Sims, I have gotten pretty good success with using c.hk to trade with their slide. And I think Guile has to guess jump his walk-up hp in order to get close to him. Using empty jump into sweep/normals is better in from my experience. IMO, Guile has no choice but to get close to win now. Empty jumping at the correct distance will also bait his hk AA, just like Guile’s c.hp.
yeah viper and sim wreck guile in AE. sim is worse though.
yea… u2 is like a slap on the wrist now. and the counter hit during booms…man, i feel sorry for guile now.
i kinda feel like that in ssf4 already. i even lose to scrubby one’s now as i’ve totally lost any confidence i had in the matchup.
Well, I’m back. Happy new year to all Guile players.
I’ve done a short research. Are the following the most conspicuous super to AE Guile changes or am I missing more?
- buffed Upside Down Kick
- reduced Spinning Back Knuckle’s damage
- reduced damage on all Flash Kicks
- reduced damage, more start up frames on Sonic Hurricane
- reduced super meter gained on each Sonic Boom
- jumping attacks register as counter hits on early Sonic Boom attempts
By the way, I wonder whether Capcom knows how to balance characters nowadays. The knee-jerk reaction appears to be nerf, nerf, nerf, which ends up making various characters futile as they rot in low mid tier-dom. The developers aren’t even trying to come up with sensible and efficient changes for some characters.
On a brighter note, Dee Jay has received his share of positive adjustments. He may be the new Guile of AE, but I’ve read that fireball characters in AE are in a bad shape. Too much speed and too many anti-fireball tools. Lame, and get out of here, Capcom. This is no 3s.
i was under the impression that capcom never knew how to balance characters.
i played a bit of Guile the other day vs The Butler & Towner and I noticed some of the nerfs Dhalsim got
- his long range stand Roundhouse can be stuffed more easily now…I jumped over Butler’s fb with an empty jump and on reaction he did stand RH…I immediately did a RH midair and stuffed it cleanly.
- his stand fierce lost some priority as well, its more easier to stuff it with low strong
the only thing that blows my mind is with all these nerfs, why didnt the developer’s give him normal stun?i wouldve been happy with that and nerfed damage all around ( except i wouldve kept u2 same startup )
he gets owned even worse matchups - Abel / Viper /
he gets owned - Dhalsim / Akuma
slight disadvantage - Blanka / Sagat / Balrog
even - Zangief / Rufus / Yang / Ryu / Ibuki / Deejay / Fuerte / Adon
slight advantage - Fei / Cammy / Rose / Chun / Dudley / T Hawk / Juri / Vega
big advantage - Cody / Gen / Sakura / Guy / Honda / Hakan / Seth / Ken
sleeper character in this version - Makoto…improved speed, comboability, dishes stun like crazy, stupid good pokes that lead into BS
beastly character in this version - Yun…give the game about 2 more months and you will see all Yun players coming up with ridiculous shit that will be breaking the majority of this game…i guarantee you
Ya, so far the Yun’s over here in Japan are still getting a feel against Guile. I haven’t found any that command grab much… which I think will be a deciding factor. Minus the command grab, dive kicks get stuffed easier than rufus’ by sonic booms and long range normals and since they can’t be done too low to the ground, you can block a string than flashkick the next on reaction.
I didn’t realize you could tag sim’s s.hp with a lvl 1 FA. I seem to remember trying and having it just sail right over the thing. I’ve also tried to c.mp it, and I’ve never been able to beat it. It will always trade. I have however found that the occaisional f.mk can tag s.hp. The level 1 FA thing though seems very useful for slowly whittling him down while getting meter for U2… which despite it’s lessened use to punish yoga fires due to startup, it’s still great for nullifying Yoga Catastrophe while still having a hit left to dash up for some pressure.
Guile is not effective as he was in SSF4. So I concur to all the posts made above.
I strongly feel all the stuff that capcom did was more of a knee jerk reaction more than anything. Guile i feel is condemned to middle tier.
Fuson did you believe Balrog was a easier matchup in Super and Seth was harder in Super, and what do you think makes the matchups with these two this way in AE?
Balrog was easier in Super compared to Vanilla because of all of Guile’s buffs
Seth was just a tad harder because he had a guaranteed chip win setup with U2
in AE Balrog could just go for a couple trades with dash straight to get some counter hit damage and stun, Guile needed his damage and meter vs Balrog, now its just gonna be pitiful
Seth I believe will be easier because he has to attack you now instead of relying on that jump fierce, and now the stomps have been nerfed as well, also I have heard that Seth’s DP can be beat by EX Flash Kick now. The more Seth comes at you, the better chances of him running into your fists. Makes sense right?
I think that Yang will give Guile a harder time than Yun because of his far standing jab has great range and links to low forward very easily (which you can 2in1 into Mantis Slash AND is safe on first blocked hit,you can hit him after the 2nd blocked hit BUT! if your opponent has meter, he can cancel it into a FA attack, which will result in counter hit crumple, dash in then fuck you up), couple that with a good crossup / fake crossup dive kick mixup, and his super that act like A3 vism shadows where the hits are staggered out, many players are gonna have a hard time dealing with that.
I just have this strange feeling Ono is getting us ready for SF5 aka the rebirth of 3S
I pray not. I also doubt it, considering SF4 is a deliberate attempt to get back closer to the roots of SF2-style gameplay.
I wouldn’t mind it if SFV was a sort of rebirth of 3S. I’m not sure what sort of system they could implement but it would be awesome, I can almost guarantee it. Some SFIII characters, mostly new characters, old character cameos, and most importantly, CHARACTER PROGRESS! No more school girl Sakura etc. etc.
