Im actually trying to think of actual notable weaknesses SF5 Guile will have compared to the other characters. He seems like he’s going to be one of the best in the game.
Since his non-EX-Flash Kick has no hit invul, some characters can take advantage of meatys, mixups or KD jump in moves and not have to worry too much if Guile has little to no meter. Won’t have the pressure for reversals except with meter.
He probably wont have too much in the way of consistent universal combos (outside target combos) due to charge and only 2 special moves.
V-Trigger probably wont have too much use in neutral, seems to only be good for combos and maybe occasional fireball war?
You could get possibly caught by like a full length sweep doing your crouch walk.
Won’t have too much in the way of crazy mixups and shenigans. Will have to be on point with zoning, projectiles and anti-airs.
If his Jabs are 4f he won’t be winning jab wars against almost half the cast.
We also don’t know his overall frame data yet. All his stuff could be terrible on block for all we know. And yet I’m not even sure it matters, considering how strong his zoning game looks. He’s also got some relatively laggy normals by the looks of it, but again, just be careful and don’t whiff those buttons if you’re uncertain. Throw a boom or do something else entirely in this case.
People have pointed out that his booms have a significantly slower attack animation in this game than they usually have (38 frames total, compared to ~30 in ST and SF4), but it’s also harder to get around zoning in this game than it was in SF4.
My only actual concern is a couple of specific matchups, namely against characters that can force Guile to approach them rather than letting him dictate the pace of the game. Nash seems like a character that could do that: his V-skill and fireball game combined with good mobility could be a serious pain. Possibly FANG (poison) too. Even though Bison has a good anti-fireball V-skill I’m uncertain if that matchup would be a problem regardless, considering how slow he is.
Other than that… not a lot of bad stuff I can think of for Guile. I think he’ll be a really strong character, and even if he turns out mediocre I’ll probably still play him since I want to be a lame motherfucker.
As an aside: I’m also curious to see if Daigo would consider picking up Guile this time around. Ryu is a very good character in this game, but Daigo also has a history with playing Guile in several games (HF, CvS2, as a counterpick in SF4), and Guile really does look very, very strong in SFV.
Probably low health (which looks like 950hp) and low stun (just speculation). If this is the case then stun monsters like Ryu and Laura can probably finish the round very quickly if they guess right.
I’m definitely hoping he’s balanced well because I don’t want to get used to playing a character that’s really good only for people to complain, then the game gets rebalanced and you’re stuck with an inferior character to the one you originally learned.
I know the non-EX flash kicks have no hit invincibility, but what do we know about the EX version? Is it invincible on frame 1 or is it more like Mika’s EX Peach where it can be meatied due to a delay on the invincibility?
Only 9 of the now 18 characters have a 3f grounded normal, its not the end of the world(and only a few of those 3f moves are actually really any good).
Its most likely Sony. When Alex was releasing they were showing pictures confirming that Sony was going through certification process for releasing the patch. Probably a big part of why most if these patches will never hit till the end of the month.
You get the tools to outplay your opponent in neutral and win before the lack of 3f normals ever become a problem. Make sure to do so. Of course you will get knocked down and forced to block occasionally, but that’s still on you if it happens. Your entire gameplan is to prevent that from happening, and force your opponents to make mistakes.
Agreed. Guile has always been strong in far and mid ranged battles. Every character has a weakness. His is close quarters rushdown. With a few matchup specific exceptions, anything that resets the match to midrange neutral is considered a positive for Guile.
