Like I said in another thread, it’s too bad Dan wasn’t the character that ended up in first place. You’d still see the same people posting about how he’s top tier and that his kyakus are too strong. It honestly doesn’t matter what character that is played by the Evo champ, there’s always some horribly misinformed and opinionated sect that can’t wait to tear into a character played by a top player; which then ends up causing a massive group polarization.
inb4 target combo removal and +10 recovery on hands.
Most Gen ‘players’ you see online don’t even know what the fuck they are doing while playing him, never mind people who just watched an actual Gen at the highest level on a stream. Yet somehow everyone forms an opinion about Gen and what should be done about him. It’s amazing really.
Honestly if Gen is left alone, no nerfs or buffs, I’m pretty happy. The only buffs I’d love is less charge time on Jyasen and if Im really arrogant I would ask for a return of EX Oga start-up invincibility…that will not happen though since it is a teleport although it costs 1 bar and I accept that fully, Gen doesn’t need it that bad imo.
If you put the work in him (a lot of work) Gen is a very scary beast. His pokes are amazing and his supers are, imo, the best in the game if you look at them as a whole. I mean crane super 0+1 start/up plus 3/4 range in the air, dafuq. Let’s not forget mantis super, any poke into hands and you just lost a lot of life juice, even more if he has ultra stocked (which btw is not OP before anyone whines).
But that’s the thing, he has all these amazing abilities, but to actually use them properly and master them is HARD. First of all his main bnb and his FADC into hk gekiro are 1 frame link combos. Secondly: he doesn’t really have a to go move like rekka or a divekick like Rufus, you gotta play the midrange footsie game and hit that c.mk into hands or score the hard knockdown with c.hk or whatever. Oh and third: remembering all the different situations for the safejumps and oga cross-ups and other ambiguous bullshit (I’ll be the first to admit crane j.mk is crazy hard to block sometimes, shiiieeet). It’s why I have a spreadsheet on my lap while I play that has all the safejump setups, cross-ups and OS for each particular character.
.
Word, all three of the above posters!
As for Gen changes, I’d like to see cr mp>hands be safe on block and hit every time along with some better frames and/or speed for Jyasen. Perhaps projectile invincibility on lp Jyasen (that would effectively make it the current EX Jyasen done with lp+mp though … only for free, lol).
cr mk Crane could get better recovery to make it more useful as a fireball ducking tool.
I’d definitely be up for making EX Gekiro a much less competent reversal tool and give Gen back EX Oga for wake-up escapes instead. Even though EX Oga is great he would be losing something very important: a viable reversal. Still, I’d be up for it because I think it fits his character way better than a mashable reversal move.
Going by this logic, if Dee Jay wins the next EVO, Dee Jay is the best character. Same goes for any other character, right.
So much fraudulence on display here, no joke. Why are these whiners even complaining?
Even if, by some freak accident, they end up facing a rank A Gen online, it’s just some scrub using Oga all over the place because he doesn’t need to do anything else.
Stop being so damn ignorant and get good.
Also, super to ultra has been a signature of Gen since Alpha. It’s not OP and if you’re getting hit by it you deserve it.
About Oga super ultra I find I hit it in 90% of the time I have it lol. He has a gazillion ways to land it so its not the opponents fault
Actually if you’re getting hit by an Oga that is not the following:
- cross-up setup
- ceiling drop chipfinish
- ceiling drop cross-up (corner)
- EX oga through fireballs catching you off guard
Then you really are doing it wrong vs Gen. Oga is such a heavily choreographed move that you have so much time to block.
Interesting thing to note; vs fireball characters especially shotos, if you whiff a cr.mp - hands combo on one corner of the screen with them on the other side, they almost always fall for it and throw a fireball unaware that you have down-back charged. Follow up the whiffed cr.mp - hands immediately with a far Oga and it’s a free super combo if you have it. From experience, the perfect place to do this is usually at the start of a round with super stocked.
You sneaky player
Sneaky, that’s the* way of the assassin*.
care to critique the video I uploaded sir. muchos gracias, merci, arigato, thank you in advance.
Hi tha messiah,
Please read my comment carefully. I didn’t state that I know Gen better than you. I said "it is sad “how little (people know about their own character).” Then I said “I know more about (other people’s characters…” As an example I reflected upon a time when a B+ Blanka player didn’t know that his own character had an overhead attack even though he used Blanka since Vanilla.
I’ve trained many Masters, A+, and offline tournament players who’ve won tournaments with my help. Because of my experience I’ve noticed that players at all skill levels using all characters lack basic knowledge and deep understand of their own character which is sad considering that they take pride in being a character specialist who played for over 3yrs. I think that you’d agree when I make that statement about players in general.

Hey man, saw u in the Canada cup teams. You did quite well considering the nerves. How are you
Thanks. I still feel Dee Jay-ed.
And I’ve finally realized that parry is not something that you should try under nerves lol. Got too cocky after landing it so many times against Xiao Hai in casuals.
How are you doing?

I’m good, still lab working on prototype setups here and there, I never attempted the parry stuff lol. Been trying to make out a way to make a living via tutorials and other sf4 stuff. Also practicing fadc into ultra with Gen as well. Even though it scales its still super cool.
That’s cool. I’m looking forward to the setups you’re coming up with.
I feel like I would have to practice that FADC into Ultra as well. It would boost my damage when I don’t have Super.
