Guess he is the best character in SSFIV:AE 2012, because next EVO is USFIV right?

Of course Gen is the #1 character of the game. Many Japanese players hate fighting him, and Cammy didn’t win EVO. #Kappa

I don’t think he’s as good as people make out, but definitely good. A lot of the times I see setups that seem obvious to me, but the person gets hit by it, and this is top players I’m talking about. Most likely down to not knowing the matchup. It’s kinda like Hakan. When you see the rare good one, people start shitting themselves.

There seems to be this weird thing that happens where because they know Gen does have some legit unreadable set-ups, people stop observing and revert to guessing on wake-up, regardless of whatever it is Gen is doing for oki.

I legit flinch every time Xian lands a near wall Oga because people should be blocking those on sight.

I think the main reason Gen wasn’t considered top tier was because no one could really execute with him at a level that made him that much of a threat. Honestly no one has taken Gen to the level that Xian has, not even Amiyu from Japan.

Under the assumption that the players are executing flawlessly and know everything about how to use his setups and can convert from every hit, i think Gen is a top tier character.

you do know that the side it hit changes depending on which frame that he hits you right?

Shallow near wall Ogas? I think this is a case where you’re talking about a specific set-up and I’m talking about specific instances outside that.

My bad, imprecise language on my part.

Yep, me assuming he was talking about Gekiro is sad. Still a wake-up option. But if we are going to call assumptions sad, your assumption of you knowing more about Gen than me, is sad.

Not trying to win a pissing contest, just defending my opinion. Don’t you think it’s a lot better than just saying someone is wrong? Sorry I’m just backing up my opinion of a better version of Gen.

And as of right now, I really only know pretty much up until 5-6 months ago. So if any thing new has been figured out. I’m out of the loop.

Oh no need to apologize, just doing a little point/counter-point with you.

Yeah haha, or when he does a jump in after a knock down from really far, you know it’s gonna be on the same side but they think it’s gonna cross up. Hats off to him anyway, if it works, why stop? He was my pick to win this year, I wanted to see a Singapore pop off.

Gen isn’t top 10. He never has been, winning EVO doesn’t give you a free pass above 8 characters

agreed hell i have not played gen since the start of 2012 and all the setups he was using i seen before from the gen forum or in matches. I swear anyone who pickup gen because that good are gonna have some issues when they run into a rufus, chun, guile. Hell i was cringing every time tokido did a bad air fireball against gen when he had ultra. Anyway what up guys

“Lower and faster mantis jump-arc that’s so low and quick it’s almost like a dive kick - Pretty sure the Jump arc change was Crane.”

"Wait, was it? Doesn’t really matter which it was of course, but I freely admit I may have misremembered that."

No you remember correctly. Both jump jumps frames (airborne time basically) were significantly increased by I think 5 frames (or 4).

You can still see the Vanilla data here: http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2008/oct/05/stamina-stun-dash-and-jump-rankings-street-fighter-4/

As you can see Gen has 30 airborne frames while closest character has 34. If you go and play Vanilla SF4 right now you can feel how ridiculous that is, your normals doesn’t even have time to come out so you just empty jump. (that’s a joke)

I think Vanilla Gen was slightly better than current version of Gen. People usually neglect the fact that current version of Gen has been experimented on for about 3 years but only about 1 year for Vanilla Gen. However I do think the current iteration of Gen is a lot more fun to play with.

Oh, and meter build was absurd. You can do an EX Oga and if that hits (~1/2 meter), you can follow up with Gekiro (+3/4 meter) and you’d have more than what you had before you did EX Oga. And EX Oga was free “get out of corner or any sticky situation” card.

"Vastly better stand mk that leads to a hands-loop - Replaced by FADC combos."

Gen had FADC combos back then too so there’s no replacement there. 4 hit cancel-able hands might be considered as the replacement part, but that does not matter since you could hit confirm super anyway since you could hit another mk after hands.

Gen won Evo, therefore technically he is the best character in the game at this moment. The caveat is that Gen is the best character only when he paired with the champion Xian.

This is pure idiocy. This statement, and many others made around SRK lately prove that most of you have no idea how to interpret tournament results. I’ll try to explain this as simply as possible.

  1. Tiers =/= tournament results. The tier list, as you can see, is simply a collection of points awarded to a character based on matchups. I’m amazed that so many people don’t realize this, because Vanilla SF4 was only a few years ago. Every top player agreed unanimously that Sagat was undisputed God tier in that game. Every. Single. One. They were right, he was a beast. Despite this, SAGAT DID NOT WIN EVO, NOR A SINGLE US MAJOR. In fact, Sagat did not win a major until much later via Sanford Kelley, despite being significantly lower in the tier lists when it happened. These facts do not contradict each other. This should not be a problem for you to understand if you have a first grade understanding of logic.

  2. Xian winning Evo proves one thing, and one thing only. On that day, arguably the most important day, he was the best AE player in the world.

  3. Xian using Gen to win Evo proves one thing, and one thing only. Gen is capable of winning evo. A top player is capable of besting all other top players with that character. Does that mean Gen is the best? No. Does it mean he’s OP? No. I would say that over half the cast is capable of winning Evo.

You’re welcome.

I heard hk gekirou will no longer be hard KD. Only ex.

Not sure of they fixed the invincibility issue. Most probably yes.

But yeah. Gen won evo. He’s an amazing character if played by capable and knowledgeable player.

why would they remove a move that works on only a third of the cast hehee, even if they make it EX it will give Gen a Untechable reversal move hehehehe

Any character in the game is amazing when played by an amazing player. Xian is just the best in the world now, it’s pretty much that simple.

This is a bullshit tread… Just felt like saying it, sorry.

Maybe the OP was bad, but it certainly was a catalyst to discussion on a board that was until recently dead. Though that is probably more Xians fault than mine. Sorry if you guys felt it wasn’t needed.

Wow, so many ignorant players in this thread. Nerfing Gen would be one of the most retarded thing ever. People always have these knee-jerk reactions, crying about any character winning evo if it is not Ryu or Akuma. Gen is mid-tier; if anything he should have some slight buffs (not being punishable on cr mp>hands on block/hit by some characters for instance).

Too bad some people are arrogant enough to claim things they have no idea whatsoever about.
